Go down to the bottom of the page, see the link marked status history, that lists every recent status change for all users. Anyone who posts in that status, brings up an entry in the Post History screen, which a lot of people use to keep track of conversations and topics on the site.

Hence if you posted a status, someone, in this case Tau, saw it and commented because they wanted to know what you were talking about, that meant it then showed up as post and others could respond as well.

Status isn't private.
