I want to start a topic about Vagrant Story, but I'm worried that it'll be one of those obscure games that no one bar me has played...

I beat it once back in its heyday. I even beat it when all my weapons were 0 damage to the final boss and I only ever did appreciable damage through giant combos and having to immediately down my risk right after. I never really got what made weapons good or what chain skills to use and I'd just have to down random bosses I only did 0 to via my sick giant chains. I did like the block puzzles for it though. I never could figure out how to enter the Temple of Kali proper though: I'd hit the room with the giant dark pit, cast cure to get some light to try and figure out where to jump, fail a dozen times, and run back to a save point so I could teleport to the one in the room with the pit. Thank god you don't have to use it to unlock it, just get to the room it's in!
I don't think I could ever go back to it.

I played it to completion... I think it was a couple months ago? My largest chain ever was.. 16? 17? Maybe 21. Gain Life and Gain MP (or whatever the one that restores MP is called) are great combos for this, even if they are on the slow side.
I've never gotten 100% map completion for that game, though. It's not really my cup of tea to do thateven with the use of a CodeBreaker.

I intend to crack it wide open, the same way I cracked Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2, Demon's Souls, and Bloodborne wide open. I'm really hoping the final boss has me tearing my hair out with sheer undiluted rage.
If you want hard mode or w/e then simply don't heal and rely on defense actions to avoid dying. Death only occurs after an attack completes and all abilities are resolved; You can hit zero HP after an attack as long as you recover above zero through Absorb Damage (recover 20% of damage taken as HP).
Of course it doesn't work on magic attacks, you need to unlock that one, and if anything is just going to oneshot you it's either dragon breath or aoe magic!
e: actually idr if aoe stuff like dragon breath or aoe magic even has timing for a defense ability, been too long since I last played. I know the fuck off attack of the last boss has it like a fucking air raid siren but that's it.

The final boss...
...well, the first from is okay-ish. The second form is annoying as hell, as it has a tendency to run away from you, closing in only when it's good and ready to act. If you're lucky, you can get a few hits on it, but, I seem to recall the damage/accuracy ratings being really bad. Though, there is a trick involving staying in the exact center of the boss-arena so that the only attack that can hit you is Bloody Sin. It's probably got the longest animation in the game, and the timing to use your counter-chain (Reflect Damage?) is pretty precise (when the camera finishes moving in on Ashley's face, if I recall).
*Edit2: Dragon's breath, I think, can be countered with Reflect Damage or whatever the defense-chain is that restores 50% of physical damage taken. There's a similar defense-chain in regards to magic-based damage based on at least the four basic elements (Fire, Wind, Water, Earth). Holy/Dark might also be in there, but I forget. I could swear there's something like Reflect Damage (Reflect Magic?) that you can use as a defense-chain against magic if you're feelinglike a Riskbreaker lucky.

I might set myself some challenges on my next run through. one I might try is to not use elemental fusion spells. It'll make the dragon bosses a little tougher. This is actually my second playthrough on VS, first time around I got to the Ogre boss, and I had no vera items, and I was doing no damage, so I started again, actually thought, and applied stragegies to each encounbter, and I breezed through. Even now the bosses and enemies give me little trouble. And I have a weapon for each enemy type. I've got a hulking two-handed sword which decimates dragon type enemies.
One thing I love about Vagrant Story is you can name your weapons. It adds a personal touch, and gives me a chance to be creative with names.

final boss chat
Yeah, I had 0 damage / %shit chances which is where I had to pull out my best combo skills. iirc I had Heavy Shot and HP Heal and through sufficient chaining I got them to do actual damage and at the same time I'd shoot my risk up from zero to max in one attack. I don't remember any particulars about the fight itself though, just a long slog of chipping his health away and never really being in danger. Even Bloody Sin andbeing a total scrub missing the defense timing was never that threatening. The tell for it is a mile wide and a cue to equip a shield if you're 2h (you can hit him while he flies over you right before the attack but gaining risk right before it is probably a bad idea), heal up and drop risk.
Really that's the story of the game. If it doesn't kill you right away it's easy to heal back up. You're more likely to die from boredom than anything the enemies do (until it's a dragon that hits all your body parts and you eat more damage than you have hp).
