I decided to play one of the first games I've ever made. I'm wondering how the hell I was able to put up with ANYTHING I implemented in that game.

I know the feeling. My first game was a boring wanderfest.

The more lackluster your first game, the next one will be made that much better because of how much you learn!

One day I will make an RPG. I mean, I've been working on it for the past year or so, but even still I'm always nervous about it being my first one, and thus won't be all that snazzy. I always say to myself that my SMBX games are all the "first ones" and those are the ones that suck. But RPGs are a different beast with a more scrutinous crowd.

This was the game in particular.

Like, the maps were so bare, open, and directionless, and the battle system had too much randomness and piss poor balancing. Somehow, that didn't bother me when I tested it oh so many years ago.

I understand, but it's honestly difficult to improve to begin with if no one looks at your game from the start, so go at it. Quite frankly, a lot of the projects I'm working on right now feel like "first ones" because I've only recently become competent with how I design games. You'll probably always get that feeling when you try something new.
