Is it just me or did Paper Mario just shrivel up and die the second they came out with Sticker Star?
More Mario RPGs in general. The Mario & Luigi games haven't exactly excelled after Super Star Saga either and if I was pressed to pick between playing Partners in Time or Sticker Star I'm not sure if I could give an answer. BiS was... mediocre but at least it went in an interesting direction. Dream Team was a huge slog between pacing and some fights like PiT Lite. I'm not very far in Paper Jam atm so I can't comment on it.

Nope. It did shrivel up and die for a reason.

In an attempt to "standardize" the franchise, Sticker Star removed all of the charming, creative elements that made the Paper Mario series what it was, and it somehow managed to make the game's combat, and many of the core aspects to what makes an RPG an RPG, boring.

Long-time fans of the series were disappointed, and this trailer looks like they are going down the same route with the next game.

I ADORE how this new game isn't even called an RPG, but an "Action/Adventure" game... *croaks*

Nintendo continues the trend of forgetting how to make a fucking Paper Mario game that's been going on since TTYD was finished.

I had the smallest sliver of hope in my mind when I heard "PM for Wii U" being rumoured. Like, shit, they're bringing it back to consoles, and to a console without gimmicky controls? Maybe they'll make it okay again!

Nah.

EDIT: Also, god damn, those big white outlines are fucking atrocious looking. Like, we get it guys. They're made of fucking Paper. You ran the joke into the ground several thousand times now.

I wouldn't say they "forgot." This whole move was a deliberate effort.

This article pretty much explains why, but I guess there wasn't enough bad reception for them to just drop the whole "let's not make this an RPG" idea?

At the end of the day I can't really begrudge them for wanting to do their own thing with their own series, but seriously, it's aggravating to read about people just making so many bad decisions for what seems like no real reason at all.

Just cause you CAN change that stuff doesn't mean that you SHOULD change it.

Anyways, I'm gonna just play Paper Mario 1 all over again, and bask in it. Seems like the only sensible decision.

every night i go to bed with a goddamn sticker star wall sticker on above my head that gives me nightmares every night.

the graphics look great though.

edit: i was expecting them to at least drop levels and make it open world since its not on the wii u. the levels in luigi's mansion dark moon and sticker star were great for a handheld but like on the wii u i don't see a point

It's a strange thing, because Nintendo has been doing this for decades and it hasn't really been until the last five or ten years that people have noticed. And to their credit, it worked for a very long time.

But I think in more recent years, game development has been more of a collaborative effort of making games, getting feedback, and communicating with fans and buyers as to what they want to see and how to make their games better. And for Nintendo to keep on the "we make the games and you buy them" track isn't inherently wrong, but it stands out significantly when most companies, big and small, are being more transparent and listening to feedback.

It's just a weird thing to see these days.
