I hate being taught art. It's fucking misery, absolute misery beyond belief. Good thing I never have to take another art course after this term!

Interesting. What don't you like about being taught art?

I'm not exactly certain why, but it gets under my skin like nothing else. I guess because I take art so seriously and personally, it feels like someone is telling me how to live my life.

My personal opinion is that art shouldn't be taught- you should learn it yourself, study the art of others, the artistry of nature, explore your own mind- whether it be through drugs or something more wholesome. I don't like the idea that there's a particular way to do something in art that's "best", or the thought that "this is the way x SHOULD be done in a certain medium", which is what it feels like I'm hearing in art lectures.

I understand that I'm part of a minority on this subject, but this art course makes me want to punch everything in the face.

Sometimes, you gotta learn the shitty paradigm to realize it's a shitty paradigm and then you can start working on how to deal with said shitty paradigm.

This is incredibly interesting as someone who's never taken an art class... I feel like there's a lot of basics that I've never learned and could from a class. It makes sense to learn the rules really well before you can break them, right?
Most artists I know don't like learning art in classrooms.

I do, though. Not because of any techniques they supposedly teach, but because I like being forced to work under their constraints to challenge myself and see if I can still come up with something that meets both their standards and my own. A lot of art classes I've taken also have group critique sessions, which I've found to be really great.
I'm an English teacher and from my experience I can say that teaching is but an illusion. There's no such thing as "teaching", you merely open up a path for someone to achieve knowledge on their own.
It's needless to say, though, that having proper guidance is good! It's all on the teacher's mindset. Being exposed to different mindsets and ideals is an extremely rich experience in your pursuit for knowledge!

Quote for truth. Although good luck getting this through to the average high-school students.

They'll say "Oh yeah, I get what you're saying." But as my grandad said, "'I understand' does not mean you fully understand - only that you're satisfied for the moment." I imagine its the same with art; lifelong learning.
