RPG MAKER 2000 - Still Kicking

Thats not RTP at all but if thats the best Rm2k map.. then no comp between XP and 2k.. I've seen 3d isometric maps (XYZ plane) as well as high resolution scripts that takes two seconds to install.

What's your opinion on "cliched" games?

I couldnt even keep playing Wild Arms 3 because of the painful clicheness of it.)

Dude that's about as far from the typical jRPG mold as you can possibly get in terms of setting and characterization (although if you compare it to American cinema in the 60s and 70s you might have a different opinion).

author=Chartley link=topic=906.msg12226#msg12226 date=1208403631
Also, I'm becoming allergic to the word cliche. We need a new word.

CLITCH

If you played as many RPG's.. in general as I have.. somethings would make you look away and cringe. One of those things for me... lectures about friendship and overcoming obstacles. Present in Legaia 2 as well. THE POWER OF LIGHT WILL OVERCOME YOU!

... What? Light..? What is this you're ranting about? I go out in sunlight all the time and unless I look directly into the sun, Im not overcome. Heck, if I stare at any light form it'll make me see spots, but using light as a weapon? What if the enemy buys sunglasses.. what then?

What's better than one huge sword? TWO HUGE SWORDS!

800 pounds of armor on someone with an average body is okay... but we need something more impossible.

Oh yeah, put a little kid in a hundred pounds of metal on the battle field. What's more? Put an almost unarmored girl wearing cat ears behind him to help him fight. I dont know if you guys noticed but if you're cut wearing paper cat ears.. you are not protected... also Armor is reeeally heavy. Ever try running with a suit of armor on? Its hard. Ever try running with a 35 pound sword in your hand? Even harder. Try running with two swords and a suit of armor? Pfft I know some people that can run with them.. but not very fast.

Im all for fantasy games.. but when every game and its mother uses the same laws of physics.. you cant help but wonder why they arent trying to shock us when we're expecting a game to be released like that. When is the last time you played a game with nothing you have ever seen or heard of before... without them looking like they're trying to do it without being so edgy? Im at the point where I can predict almost spot on when someone is going to die.. and its okay if the game is free.. but I like being surprised with the storyline every once in awhile. I dont need the same games force fed to me for 29.99 per game.

RPG MAKER 2000 - Still Kicking

Feel free to post a good rm2k map if you can find one.

What's your opinion on "cliched" games?

I dont really support cliche'd games.

Yet, let me clear the air on things.

There is a difference between cliche elements, and being cliche.

A spikey haired guy/mop headed hero (norm for alot of jrpgs)
Some kinda paladin, muscly bound medieval talking hero (NArpgs)

Okay yeah.. lets say you look at this game and you think. I still want to play it, yeah why not? Okay lets just say it just has cliche elements (Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone, Final Fantasy 7 had those elements and they were epic)

You notice as you play the game its being so cliche and corny that you are now forcing yourself to play it.

The hero is giving alot of speeches about how friendship overcomes stuff, doing superhuman impossible feats out of nowhere, having a sword that can save the world in one swing, gaining strength from out of nowhere in the middle of a battle. The hero is being emo, being a loner that travels in a group, out of nowhere becomes social and laughs and crap. (JRPG)

The hero is traveling in a group with a bunch of classes (Cleric, Rogue, Paladin.. etc). A villain has no motivation on tyranny committed. Changing your sword makes you stronger as opposed to actually building up your muscle strength. The bigger the sword the stronger you are. In the end of the story the fate of the world lies on one person. (NA and JRPG elements)

Okay lets say those are not enough to drive you away.. (With Legaia 2 I did not want to play it again because of those very elements.. it was just ghastly how corny it was.. I couldnt even keep playing Wild Arms 3 because of the painful clicheness of it.) Those would still be cliche elements if you can see past those similar storylines.

Okay lets go to being cliche.

If your hero, has no motivation to fight besides an enemy that has no motivation to destroy the world but always portrays good morals.
YOU MAY BE REDN.. CLICHE!

If your hero, travels in a party but prefers to be alone.
YOU MAY HAVE A CLICHE GAME

If your hero, is searching for a crystal, a demon, or a reason to be alive
YOU MAY HAVE A CLICHE GAME

If your hero has super powers.. can be shot five times in with a gun and take 50 damage but take one hit from a sword and be killed.
YOU MAY HAVE A CLICHE GAME

If your hero has a giggly bimbo female stereotype in his party.. and is a male. At the same time if that stereotype is useless and only watches on as the hero is massacred by an orge.
YOU MAY HAVE A CLICHE GAME

If your hero has an inner monologue talking about darkness, saying who am I, or questioning if existance is really real.. as if its the deepest thoughts on the planet.
YOU MAY HAVE AN EMO... AND A CLICHE GAME

RPG MAKER 2000 - Still Kicking

RM2k/3 is illegal for one.

I admit back in the day I used to make games with it until XP. Yet when I got into the groove of things I noticed just how superior XP is. Graphic-wise, Audio, features, and you can do more things with XP. 2k/2k3 Just doesnt has the flair of XP.. and this is coming from an ex user of 2k3 of four or so years. I wasnt really doubtful of moving at all. With 2k/2k3 you're stuck with sprites with a lower quality, that looks a bit more pixelated than XP.

Rm2k RTP'd Map

Rmxp RTP'd Map.. with fogs.

Stunning simply stunning. Im not sure how people think evented systems are better on 2k than XP or VX.. and believe me I've seen some awesome JRPG evented systems.. but I also seen Scripted systems and trust me when I say, more capabilities. Pixelmovement, Mode 7, Isometric movement.. the sky is the limit with RGSS. You dont have to abandon your pirated 2k, but you dont have to go on a personal crusade and say that 2k is better because its been out longer.

Request .. to join my team for money?

Sorry I dont mean to offend anyone, since I reeeaally like this place. . Yet I do want a better looking tileset, and sprite poses. I know people have lives so I give them money for their services as a thanks for helping. Other games on RMXP have more than one team member helping.. not such on a scale but I suppose not paying would be taking advantage of people.

Legend of Harpine: Chapters of Time *Updated*

RM Network, the Final Frontier! Gasp <3

To be honest I've never heard of the Misaos, Aveyond, or anything else (Super underground game designer) until I became apart of the gaming forums.. and holy heck has things changed since the olden days of RM2k *sigh*. Im really excited about the Misaos, I like playing the games thats elected for one they're super fun. You guys did awesome <3 Im actually jealous of some of your battle systems. Alas, Im rambling and I guess I should get on the ball.. I'll talk later after this synopsis of my game <3 k?

Warning: This is a rpg with mature themes.
Note from the creator: Skipping to the screenshots without reading the storyline will just raise questions. The game is in beta, and there will be many things changed in the future.. releasing a demo right now will just give the game a bad reputation.. since even I play games for battle and there is just the prologue.. with one measily tutorial battle. Sadly even the character art is still being improved.. so there is no definitive pictures on the game. I will however release the games theme music in a day or two.. depending on when the composer gets done with the boss theme music. The maps in the screenshots will be changed in the final product of the game.. just think of it as "concept mapping"

Game Overview

My game design goals

Fundamentally I am trying to achieve something that has never been achieved before. The world will be shocked at how we are using an existing engine with new art.

Common Questions

What is the game?

The game is an soap opera-ish role playing game. It's set in a time period which applies as medieval yet it borders on the steam punk genre.

Why create this game?

Im actually trying to set the bar higher for Rpg Maker XP designers. I'm a pretty wonderful novelist, and applying such a storyline will for the most part captivate the imagination.

Where does the game take place?

The game takes place in a place called Harpine. It's in a world similar to earth but it doesnt exist in this galaxy or universe. It's a fiction that masquerades as a non-fiction novel.

What do I control?

You will be in charge of a nobel in the first part of the game, yet the game has many different storylines. To further explain the player controls you'll have to read the below paragraph.

How many characters do I control?

In the first part of the story, your main protagonist would be Nova Hiwind. There will be many chapters of the game in which there will be other storylines. In Murial's storyline you would control an orphan avian master who fights with a flying bird named Starlight. In Arshes' storyline you will fight with a group of three friends.

What is the main focus?

There isn't really a main focus in the game seeing as there are different storylines. Murial starts out wanting to find the story of the long dead Nova Hiwind. Arshes and Party wishes to defeat Aura, the antagonist in this game. Nova just wants to find his lover, Claire Hart.

What's different?

In this game, it focuses on being more of an interactive novel. The world isnt in any serious danger, nor can a character surpass any of the human limits. The game focuses on being dramatic with a solemn theme. It's for those who would like to be moved by the storyline, rather than the features.

The Game World

Overview

Poroure': This is the home of the nobles, a monarchy that relies heavily on tradition as opposes to changing even if its for the better. In Harpine, Poroure represents the more elegant sets.

Ain muc': Home of the magi, though this place seems as a democracy it is run by the magistrate. It relies heavily on making advances, yet the occupants of the country are more content with nature.

Nivea: Home of the enlightened, though they excel in machines they've a militia unrivaled by the other countries of Harpine.

Oxa: Home of the dreamers, they're the most ambitious of Harpine. They're set on being the monarchy of not just Oxa, but, Harpine itself.

World Feature #1

War Campaigns. In the storyline of Nova Hiwind the player is given the option of fighting for a select race to extend the territory of said race. Battles in these campaigns are fought as in a strategy RPG.

World Feature #2

Missions. In Murial's storyline you are given a chance to extend your talents. Depending on your job you can either; spy on the government of whichever location you are located, assassinate politicians or high ranked (even lower ranked) persons, become a rogue that fights for money, or just remain a thief and pick locks as well as pockets.

The Physical World

Overview

Poroure
Sophisticated world, the inhabitants are called Neigi. They're hated by the other countries because of their smug arrogance. They look down on cross breeding with any other country.

Ain muc'
A more tribal location, the inhabitants are called Forbidden. They are looked down by the other countries because of the darker skin tone. They look down on killing for no reason.

Oxa
A rough slum of a location, the inhabitants are named Weish. They seem to want to do anything for power and an upper hand on the other countries. They live for the thrill of fighting.

Nivea
An organized yet, medieval location. The inhabitants are named Eishu. They focus on preparing for what may happen and yet advancing for the future.

Key Locations

Time

Time of day will also be an essential factor of the game events.

Camera

Overview

The game will have a camera angle that alternates during battle and cutscenes. The camera angle wont change during the time you're in town.

Camera Detail #1

Birds Eye, Close up, Far Away.

Camera Detail #2

During birds eye the camera would of course zoom out above the NPC's or player.
During close up it'll zoom in on the NPC or Player.
During far away it'll zoom out to a random location in front, behind, or to the side of the event or player.

The World Layout

Overview

The world is seperated into four countries. Poroure, Nivea, Oxa, and Ain muc', within these four countries there are many towns and villages. The landscape and enviroments also differ from country to country.

World Layout Detail #1

To be improved on in version 1.1

Extra Miscellaneous Stuff

Overview

Voice actors, and animators. The past animator that I hired, quit while waiting for my programmer/scripter to return. Meh, and sadly that is not cool.. so Im looking for another animator to replace the past animator. Voice actors are not completely full.. there are plenty of open spots but I'll change that after I hire the rest.

Junk I am working on…

Camera angles, camera angles, camera angles. Hard as hell.. but Im pulling it off. Im hoping to add more PoV by the finished version of the game.

Souuundtrack, Im adding vocals from a reknown female vocalist. Amethyste (google her.. type in Amethyste and soundclick.) Also Im already working on getting the resources for Legend of Harpine 2 underwraps. Its going to be a bad-ass treat for the fans, unlike part one instead of it being more refined.. it's going to be a dark, gothica feel to it. Just something to look out for. <3

=/ Noone ever likes my mansion map. It's supposed to be all grass.. what else do you expect in a close up of a mansion? *tilts head* It wasnt half bad.. too bad I deleted it.. if it makes you guys feel better (didnt delete it because of the comments.. just because the game is going to be seven shades of awesome and I am a perfectionist and I thought I should use custom tilesets and blah blah blah blah) I decided a few days back to delete the 30 minute demo of mine and redo things. D: Like adding more camera angles, and and hiring Inquisitor to do custom maps.. but since his site is closed I'm playing a waiting game... *run on sentence*

Quintessence - The Blighted Venom

I have to be brutally honest with you Reives.. I enjoyed it. Really, really dramatic.. just like I like my games.
