Make a small, short, focused, and polished game with a more specific audience that doesn't get a lot of love from AAA developers. As an indie dev, this is your greatest advantage.
The indie market is getting very crowded with developers. You'll need to not only be able to make good games, but be able to market them to as many people as possible.

Thank you unity. I don't feel ready yet, but my friend was the one who recommended I try eventually.
That's good, I think everyone has an opportunity to be moderate successful in the indie world, with perseverance. In the meantime, I'd start expanding your social network with other developers and outlets. Twitter, tumblr, other RPGM sites, etc.
