I really like some open-world games, but it's very rarely for the plot aspect.
I absolutely love smaller indie games that tell a cohesive story, especially if it feels personal. Too often you see people tack on random things they think of spur-of-the-moment and soon the plot's direction is scattered and indecipherable. Focused, thematic and with a purpose - that's a good plot.
(Note: However, plots about things spinning out of control are totally awesome!)

I always like to compare Final Fantasy XII, with Final Fantasy XIII, as one's almost completely linear, while the other is like..open world nearly right off the bat(after the prologue with Reks).
Both have decent plots imo, but the larger the game, the more time I get to waste my life on~ xD

I usually find open-world games a little lacking in, like, stuff to actually do. People pad out the content with a lot of samey things, and I find myself wishing they'd spent a little more attention to the details. Things like Fallout: New Vegas are nice exceptions, though.
Ha! Open world games are definitely better for wasting time. I haven't played FF12 or 13, but when I think of open-world RPGs I'm thinking of something like Skyrim - huge, aimless and ready to explore.
Skyrim's got some cool aspects but the plot really wasn't there for me - I can't imagine how you could weave an intricate plot into a game that freeform, but I'm sure if it was well-done it'd be an amazing game.

There's also the Elder Scrolls series; each one is ginormously huge, and I never got bored while exploring~ :3
EDIT: Darn, Slash beat me to it! xD
Anyway, while I was spending my time in Morrowind, I could've sworn I spent like 20-30 hours just wandering the world aimlessly without any idea of what the plot was, lol~

I add non-linear gameplay when I know I can play test it thoroughly.
Too many design variables that can go wrong is a nightmare.
