Study other languages and cultures, and you'll have more knowledge to create ideas from.
In Altima I named all the characters after newspaper comic characters and every location after various lakes located in Canada. Another project took the first names of various NHL players. It isn't crazy and creative but it is effective!
I am all for that cheese thing! Of course, a majority of my names I come up with are just chopped up and rearranged words or maybe just straight out words if they're obscure.
All of the place names in Generica come from small towns and villages in Saskatchewan.

Interesting how you guys think of most of your character's and cities names...

I usually just pick out what sounds "catchy". :)
