What exactly is the purpose of setting a status?

Well, it can be used for all kind of things, it just depends. Some people like using statuses as a announcement or an update for their games and what are they currently working on without the use of a gamepage yet; some people like using statuses to post and talk about stuff that they wouldn’t able to on the forums or on the “Welp, Welp” part of the boards; and some people just like using them to post nonsensical gibberish or even just to talk about the weather! It just depends on what you wanna use it for. Think of it like an alternate version of Twitter without the major complexity behind it.

Ah okay. From my point of view, Statuses can only be seen if one were to check the status tag of that person which is on a small button on their blog? Or when I update a status, does it inform my subscribers that I have done so?
The status is not linked to any of your game pages in any way.
On the contrary, they are linked to your profile instead.

So no, your game's subscribers won't be notified if you post a status. It will only appear on the Community portal, below Latest Statuses.

For statuses, no, only you’ll receive a notice if somebody happens to post in one of your statuses. It’s not like the blog feature here for whenever you post a new blog that all your subscribers will be informed about that.

EDIT: Damn it, karins_soulkeeper, you beat me to it.
Oh. They appear in the community portal. Whelp, that would explain how you found this post. I had no idea they were linked to the forums at all. I thought it was akin to the status update feature on Skype.
A lot of people use the Community page due to it's extra bits and bobs. (Frankly, I don't know why we don't just do away with the forum page and just use the Community one instead.)
The forums and the community page look one and the same, why is there two even?

Actually I tend to access the Status notices via the history link at the bottom of all pages in the 'archive' section.
