House on Haunted Hill isn't the scariest movie ever by any stretch, but it hit me with enough right stuff at the right time to make me lose sleep.
Drag Me to Hell and Stigmata have enough gruesome imagery to stick with me for a while after I watched them.
That said, I don't tend to get scared. I usually get invested though, so waiting for a character to reveal they're dangerous is like torture. The Boy Next Door does that to me. >.<
Hush is considered a horror movie, and I love it, but it doesn't scare me much beyond getting at that side of me that just wants the characters to be OK. I'd suggest it either way! :D
I think most of mine count as psychological horror? Maybe not Stigmata and Drag Me to Hell. Don't quote me on that though. :P
(Stigmata was probably the worst for me though, if only because of its shock value.)

Sir Redd of Novus: He who made Prayer of the Faithless that one time, and that was pretty dang rad! :D

If it wanted to be charming, it backfired. Badly.

Drag Me to Hell is really weird to me. Some of the imagery is literally ripped out of my nightmares but the rest is...kind of silly? Like I don't know if its supposed to be scary or funny and it just kind of ended up being unpleasant.
@Solitayre Yeah, definitely! The mood it sets is really kind of odd. I think that's what makes it stick in my mind so much. Well... that and I was relatively young when I first watched it so a lot of the scary stuff REALLY got to me and a lot of the funny stuff flew over my head.
Drag Me to Hell was a Sam Raimi movie; that guy's just a bit of a goofball and it rubs off in everything he does--not that that's a bad thing; I like the guy.
There's a nice theater in Austin that has a little summer movie series that's pretty sweet. I had the pleasure of seeing both The Shining and The Thing, and they were WAY more intense than I remembered them being. The Thing got me a few times, but The Shining made me feel like I had a lead weight on my chest through half the movie. Don't Look Now probably has the single most terrifying moment I've seen in a film, though. It's hard to pick one; I love a great horror flick. I guess I'd say The Shining probably got to me the most overall, but the climax of Don't Look Now stuck in my head for weeks.
Alien's a great choice, too; I would have loved to see that on the big screen.

Ghostwatch managed to trick the nation back in 92, came way before the found footage craze. It hasn't aged well in some portions but the fact that it was banned from being rebroadcast on the BBC gives it an semi mythical status. The fallout was hilarious though.
One film that stood out for taking an shit on the genre was Cabin in woods. You can't watch horror anymore without making a correlation with the aforementioned film. Plus it has the best use of the Godzilla threshold on screen.

Oh, I totally get you. Tremors was the same way for me when I was a kid. Very silly movie, but when you're little, a movie about monsters under the ground who will eat you if you take so much as a step is a recipe for some weapons grade paranoia.
