Have you learned English while developing games on RM?

Hello!
author=RafaelLeon
1) Has forum usage (posting and viewing forums) helped you to develop your writing and reading skills in the English language? If yes, how?

Actually, when I started to consult English forums, my reading level was already pretty high. However, since English is a particularly idiomatic language, forums have allowed me to understand many more modal verbs and hardly evident expressions. Since I'm not a native English speaker, my phrasing tends to be awkward. Nevertheless, given that forum replies are often like "written" oral replies, the phrasing has become more natural. Somehow, it has melted with the environmental style. And, of course, it has helped me to improve my oral skills.

2) Has game development on RPG Maker (along with forum usage, or without forum usage) helped you to develop skills in the English language? If yes, how?

Of course. Well, since I'm not a native speaker, while developing my games, I sometimes think the sentences in Spanish or French. The need of translating them forces me to look the problematic words up in a dictionary and, therefore, to slowly expand my vocabulary skills. It's the same when I have to reply in forums.

Finally, Kylaila interestingly pointed out the fact that, RM being a hobby for most of us, we don't lack the motivation to search the vocabulary we don't have and, in general, to make our sentences understandable by the community.

If you ever decide to make a paper on this subject, you can obviously use these pieces of information. Thus, please inform me as soon as the final product is ready!

See you!

Popopow Review

Hello, Link_2112! First of all, thank you for your review. It's been interesting to read it in so many ways. I agree with most of what you've said, and now I'd like to give my opinions, clarify a few things and ask you for further details on some other things. I'll go point by point.

Graphics: I'll probably make the modification you did. I was hesitant about that during all the development, but aesthetically speaking, I thought that the character being pushed up was cooler. In fact, it's true that it could be annoying, but, since I was really soon used to it, I guess I lost perspective.
Story: What is fun about this is that the Shakespeare-ish writing style is something I added for the translation. In the Spanish original version, it wasn't like that. I thought it could be interesting, but apparently, it might've been to cryptic. Depending on the other reactions, I'll consider modifying it.

About the font: actually, it's not a problem of the font, it's a Windows 7 (and 8, I guess) issue that happens with any RM2k/2k3 game (however, I discovered recently that there is a patch able to correct it). In fact, it's because of the Cleartype mode, which is essentially letters antialiasing. Of course, you usually aren't sensitive to it, but due to the low RM2k resolution, the letters are distorted and the messages become hard to understand... Disable it in the Control Panel, and all the problems will disappear. I'll modify the main post to make the potential players aware of that.

Gameplay: I'm really concerned about this. Believe me, I already had to reduce the difficulty of the last two worlds one or two times, and I even remade from zero the last three levels. Apparently, it was far from being enough... Then, I didn't really understand your descriptions about the turning issue... Is it related to the 3x3 squares with enemies?
About the difficulty: If you didn't find that it was irregular, then I'm somewhat relieved. At the beginning, there were some really difficult levels together with some easy ones, so there wasn't really a progression feeling. However, if you didn't get the impression that the last levels were harder than the previous ones, then there's still work to do. I'll somehow try to reduce the 2nd and 3rd worlds' difficulty, to balance the whole...

I will say that some of the mechanics were well used. Some things just jived instantly and I felt good about completing it. Too bad there weren't more of those moments. But dude, having a game mechanic that forces you to kill yourself is bad bad bad.

Oh, so the kamikaze skill displeased you. My point was to grant some power to the player after surviving four worlds, but I didn't want to repeat the "yellow square" method, so I came with that.

author=Link_2112
Especially when it's literally at the end of the level, forcing you to do the whole thing again when you barely made it through the first time! *shakes fist*

5-2 ?

Final thoughts: If it isn't entertaining, then it's a failure. However, you're right. Since I played to the game a lot during the development (the Arcade mode seems really easy to me), I guess I lost perspective, and therefore I misjudged the difficulty. Nevertheless, since the Spanish community isn't in the best of its shape, I didn't get proper feedback until now. I'm not justifying the issue, it's only an explanation.

So, with all, thank you for your feedback. One day, I'll post a better version. There's still work to do, and I must keep fighting against the program's control limitations (for instance, that's the reason why you don't really have any freedom of movement at any point of the game).
Finally, just one question: at one point, you speak about your video, but I don't see it. Is it because it still isn't up, or because I'm a complete n00b?

@Link_2112,
Congratulations! I'll await your review with eager anticipation, to better understand how I can make the whole better.

As for the error, thank you for the information. I'll keep that in mind, at any rate.

I am using Windows 8.

How it goes is I open the file, I get a black screen for a few seconds like it's going to start, then it minimizes. If I try to maximize it, the same sequence repeats: black screen, minimize.

Is there a problem with a specific resolution?

Well, actually, I had never heard about this kind of error in RM2k... You're right, it might be due to the resolution. Try to go into your nVidia control panel and disable your secondary display, and set your resolution to the lowest available. If it doesn't work, I don't really know what to do. I'm asking around ~maybe someone knows what to do...

Frankly, I'm also having trouble starting the game. I get a "No se puede abrir el archivo Tнtulo" message, probably referring to the Título file in the Title folder. Perhaps it's something about the AppLocale/Unicode stuff? I don't much about it, but I'll see what I can do.

Edit: Okay, forget that. It's because the system's default language is Russian, so the Spanish characters weren't recognized. All I had to do was to change that -í- character to -н- in the Titulo file's name.

Oh, I'm sorry that you're going through all that trouble.
In fact, since it's a Spanish game translation, all I did was changing the contents of the images, texts, etc., but I didn't change the files names, since it would've implied rebuilding everything from the ashes... I never thought that that would've posed a problem. Excuse me for that.

Popopow

For the font, it's a common problem. You have to disable the ClearType mode.
To do so, in Windows 7, you must go to Control Panel >> Appearance and Personalization >> Display and select 'Adjust ClearType Text'.
Then, untick 'Turn On ClearType', click 'Next' for the remaining steps and click finish. Then everything should be alright.
It's an antialiasing mode, so you might want to enable it after playing (although I usually don't, since it's annoying)

It looks cool, but I can't start it. I turn it on, my screen turns black, and the game minimizes.

How strange. I'm upset. As far as I know, the game is conveniently independized, and should be playable without RM2k's RTP or other stuff. Plus, no patch is used... The game minimizes, and then I guess you can't re-open it, can you? Or is it that the window closes? Which OS do you use?

Hello, ThunderManU!

TungerManU
So this is the game you were talkin' about? Seems cool.

You should upload the download in their respective section. Go to the Submissions tab at the top, then find your game and choose "Edit", then go to Downloads and click on "Add Download". You can use a file host, or you can upload the game file directly to RMN. The reason why this is important is because we can't review a game with no downloads, and also so that you can see how many people have downloaded your game.

OK, done. I've put two links, just in case.

TungerManU
By the way, length is not measured in KBs. You probably meant "size"?

Yes, indeed. Edited. It was a hispanism.

Popopow

By the way, I strongly recommend you to play the game once in Casual mode before trying anything reckless, unless you are an arcade hardcore freak. Otherwise, due to the high difficulty, you might not be entirely satisfied by the game experience.

Hello from a Spanish User

Hello everyone!
Actually, I've known this community for a long time. However, I am Spanish (and I live in France). The fact is that English is far from being my native language. In short, until now, I didn't have a thing to show (to you, because all my games were written in Spanish), and I thought that my English skills were not high enough to allow me to actively participate in this community.
Nevertheless, given that I recently finished a short puzzle game, I decided to translate it into English (and French), since it shouldn't be too hard (and still, I had the GREAT idea to use some really archaic forms that were, in short, a pain in the ass...). So here I am. Now I guess my level is to the point, and I have something to show. So here I am. I won't spam you here, in my introduction message, so if you're curious about what I've said until now, please check my profile.

Finally, I would want to congratulate all those who built this community: the staff first, and then all the users who make it live. The profiles-axed structure is really a brilliant idea, and, as a result, you've managed to have an unified English RM community, which is far from being the case in the Spanish community, constituted by dozens of undead forums and hundreds of non-linked blogs... It is really sad, but even although we've tried to unify everything, there are always deepening fractures... So, again, congratulations. I hope to be able to stay here, with you, for long.

See you soon, and nice to meet you all!

PS. Any English games recommendations?
PS2. Newbie question: how long is, on average, the delay between submitting something and it being approved by the staff (if so)?
