BLACKDRAGON84'S PROFILE

Born in the era of the NES I have been a gamer for the past 20 years. and having been on the consumer side of gaming i have always wondered what the development side is like. I have played around with maker titles in the past (rpg maker on psx and fighter maker on ps2) and have been tinkering with rpg maker vx ace on steam for about a month. as far as what kind of rpg i want to make i take HEAVY inspiration from Final Fantasy VI (the best game in the series in my opinion) chrono trigger, breath of fire and other rpg titles of the 90's. I particularly like Final Fantasy VI because of what they did with the limited capabilities of the SNES. to this day i still care more about the 16bit sprite characters in that game then the fully blown 3D rendered characters of current games. I hope that i can learn a thing or two about game development here have fun doing it and make new friends.

showing my art

Just wanted to show some of the art i have done. and where i will be posting future art so as to keep track of everything and have it all in one place.

http://blackdragon1984.deviantart.com/

it doesn't have much on it but i put things on it when i feel like sharing. figured i would put it here so people can see my RPG maker stuff and let me know what they think. for a while i have been using renders and brushes to make art. (the face i have uploaded was created with a pre made face generator file that i got for gimp.

here's a link to it for anyone wanting to give it a try. it's works really good.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SY7l9w9HmDk

it says it's for Photoshop but i have not had any issue using it in gimp. all the parts are setup as layers. and the YouTube vid is a tutorial on how to use it.

one last thing if this is in the wrong part then please move it. i didn't know where exactly to put this.

two graphics related questions

I have been working on my first game using rpg maker vx ace on steam. and i have a rogue basic idea for what i want the game to be. but i have two questions and both are related to graphics. i hope to get a artists/sprites reply on this.

1. what style are the battlers/monsters/bosses made in for games like FF4/5/6? are they hand pixled? are they line drawn then sprited?

2. making sprites that can show emotions (again like FF4/5/6) since i like the way the characters showed there emotions like laughter, sorrow, anger, etc. can these emotion sprites be used in rpg maker vx ace?

if you need examples of what i am talking about let me know.

Hello my name is...

Not inigo montoya. it's Blackdragon and I am new to this community. As my profile says i have been a gamer for the past 20 years and have always wanted to try to be the person who creates the next great game. In a age where a lot of AAA games are made at a assembly line rather then each one being hand crafted. i feel like communities like this one are needed to keep the balance a lot of the games i have seen from the maker community remind me of the time long since gone where game developers (namely ones who where the masters of there genres like squire-soft) cared enough about the fans of there games that they painstakingly added life to there games. enough so that some of the best games of the time felt more like personal journey's then simple video games. I hope to one day recreate that feeling and show the world the kind of magic that video games (RPG's in particular) held in there small limited world.
