I'd scale down the picture a bit, all the same. your character is supposedly at the same depth in that shot as the first row of small plants, and yet they tower over his head. unless the intention is for him to be tiny, some tweaking is necessary.

very nice shot, though.

@jakandsig: Agree with Mawk, it'd make more sense if the character were about six times as tall as he is right now. Impressive that you got the vanishing perspective to work; now just blow the character up to the right size. Something like FF8 sprites might work better, since RTP at that scale is going to have some really giant pixels.

I have it zoom while the character is moving forward and mid zoom blend a closer view of the shot so it's as if you are walking behind the character.

Been working on the following:

Got a good shot, got the shades to blend in, and have the character shrink in real time as he is going forward.

e: if you want to give the impression of steep terrain by tilting a photograph, do not choose a photograph where the horizon is visible.
Ah. It might also help then to actually have steep terrain. I couldn't climb Tucumcari because it was off limits, so I took a bunch of faux-dramatic pictures at flat elevation.

Still, for tiny characters it sorta looks impressive. Until, well, yea you see the horizon. But in theory you could be coming down a steep hill. Also has horizon. The key seems to be less about the horizon, more about the slope (which, yes, still sucked since all the tilt in the world couldn't mask more than 15 degrees of angle)

More on perspective here.

In which cases, you could combine pictures with parallazes and have some scroll for realistic effects.

I don't care either way. Just make your game good.

So I guess this means yes in your case?

I have thought about using picture-based backgrounds, as they have been used to great artistic effect in many games.

Having said that, as mawk pointed out, using picture backgrounds can potentially restrict or complicate tile based movement, which can be a greater problem if the game depends on precise player movement (such as solving puzzles or outrunning enemies). I'm not saying it can't be done well, but in my experience tile based maps are easier to manage in that respect.

Yeah, Grid like movement is a problem, well, mostly because RPGM does not support diagonal movement.

Sunset over Imdahl.Check it.
Sure, there were some tiles, but the majority was drawn backgrounds and it is a classic.

Not sure if the download still works but it's a freakin' awesome game.

Holy shark you're still here? Man, I ain;t seen you since that last thing...

Anyway, for the game you mentioned art style aside, yeah, it's a ice example I ahve played it before, although the design restricts movement. Something that annoyed me in games like FF8.

[Poll] Rpg games with drawn or picture backgrounds.

I have been working on a few rpgs where I don't use tiles or the RPg at all but instead of picture in the background. Picture backgrounds have been used in games like Ultima and Final Fantasy PSX games.

Do you think that the idea can translate well to Rpg Maker? I have been working on a few games using picture backgrounds, and for the most part, if I draw, or find a picture at the correct angle, it seems tow ork quite well.

What program do you recommend?

3D Rpg maker has great 2D Support and allows tile customization and more. The interface has more menus to navigate than other rpgs makers though.

What do you like in a turn based battle system?

6 people in the party, 3 active two in the back, you can switch between them, and if someone in the front dies, someone in the back replaces like BOFIV, so that the party system isn't clustered like 4 people in the front or something like Suikoden, and it can split the focus on 3 people at a time making strategy more accurate and less based on luck.
