this is going to go straight under everyone's heads but..
tamahome's non-game "the everlasting musical frontier" and his faked suicide.
the dastardly deeds of dynastynet's own VonZippa when allowed operhood on the irc (ultimately my fault).
the names "dao" "thora" "blade" "pope" "rvd" "radium_radish" "misterman" "ace" "kindred".. "rast" who was programmer of RPG engine and co-founder of the site.. who went on to be a notable dragon-themed furry..
"kiwi" and "hogosha" of florida .. the inimitable "RPG_wizard".. "manhatton" creator of the manhatton project .. "spoonybard" who was in charge of the mailbag.. "airzone" of australia, creator of RPGCK (i think). "puckingfunk" and "daegan" of melvindale. etc, etc.
oh check it out, irc.rpgmaker.net
i really wish it'd saved constitution.txt, a magnificent document epitomising the high ideals of our days.. ie; taking irc too seriously.
the original rpgmaker.net was a funny little thing, for it attempted to be the center and birth of an entire internet nerd community. if you cared about rpg making programs besides ascii's, or if you were indeed all about rm2k.. or maybe if you were just on the RPGmaking topsites or webring or what the f ever, you were expected to be affiliated or otherwise familiar with rm.net in some manner.
it had been done before, and was done again -- probably better in both cases. and it didn't work out, of course.. for all the usual reasons i shouldn't need here to enumerate.
true story: rpgmaker.net once had a mascot.. as designed by one "linguar" (programmer of CGCK, the other co-founder of rpgmaker.net -- who used to always ask me for pointers re: his attempts at art/cat women), a blue haired chick by the name of 'koyasha'.
he would go on to be sole proprietor of the site in 2001 or so.. then some stuff happened and rast gave the domain to fenix/bartek (whom we all hated for no reason i can readily recall). i think he made it a re-direct to gamingw, which you may be familiar with.
RPGsource was another prominent node of the community afterwards, i believe, housing "ancient_warrior", whom we met on one of the roadtrips (yes, there were roadtrips, as driven by captainR of the older still '#rpgmaker'/nexus crew).. one of my irl friends "sheex", others, including aforementioned linguar.
i can see some of the people from this pre-original-rm.net period still exist.. i enjoyed the back issues of kentona's rmn snews for the dedicated member part -- i was glad to see holbert the one chiefly responsible for reviving the domain.
unrelated, i saw an old #rpgmaker.net lurker on the ffxiv beta test irc a few months ago. he is one of the only dolphin-centric furries i've ever heard of. and clearly a huge nerd. i feel bad i didn't say hi.
i remember darien had an rpgmaker.net themed mud. i also remember making an RPG in which don miguel was a prominent boss? pretty sure that happened.
i'm sure that by now you've come to the realisation this is a history lesson wholly irrelevant to you and all other hyoomanze of worth. but if anyone else remembers what the scene looked like a decade ago.. well, it looked about as good as it does now. IE, sucks and is full of uncooperative people/the barely pubescent/failed hobbyists/the hopelessly autistic/pokemon fetishists.
i'm being harsh. as a matter of fact, there appear to be many people thriving and driving in the game creation world. sure mediocrity can be expected to rule, but..
i'm still alive, anyways, if anyone on the google was wondering (perhaps in the same over-caffeinated and wistful state i am in at current) and if anyone has any logs or other artifacts from that time period, i'd be (morbidly) very interested. the wayback only returns so much. i was just turned 16 in the summer of 2000.
