I have a half-way through game that needs nothing but a story to get it finished. I mean, everything is already set. Battles, and gold, item, and exp distributions are fairly balanced. Any changes caused by a story element will have little to no effect to the gameplay already set.
BUT, I don't feel like working on it anymore, for some reason. I feel that something's quite wrong with how I set the game up, and am having second thoughts on continuing. I want to drop the project and start a new project that feels more "solid" than the current, but I also wouldn't want three months' worth of toil to go to waste just like that. Even if I say that I'll just "temporarily" put the project on hold while I work on a new one, it's unlikely that I'll ever go back to it once I turn away from it.
*sighs* What to do...

Have you had anyone playtest it for you? If someone else gives you some helpful feedback, maybe it'll give you a kick of motivation!
Maybe put a help topic up saying "can someone add a story to this game for me". There's plenty of people who are good at story but not gameplay and they might be glad to hop on the chance. Only hire skilled people though.
Get it done and over with. Only then can you decide whether that feeling's true, and usually it is not.
I think it's pretty normal for such a long project. At some point, you feel you simply had enough.

Lots of good suggestions here. Getting someone else to help with the story may be just what you need. If not, I say give it one more heartfelt try.
If you still find that you cannot enjoy working on it, it may indeed be time to move on. I'm all for powering through obstacles with pure enthusiasm, but if the project's lost everything that makes it fun to work on, that can be very bad. This is a hobby, after all, and should have some fun to it. If not, it may be time to try something new.
Best of luck! ^_^

How long is the game? I have the day off today, so I've got plenty of time to give some feedback. You say you've been working on it for three months? If it's not terribly long, send it my way and I'll take a look at it.
EDIT: If it is long (like, over 3 hours long), I'll play as much as I can today and give you some suggestions. If it's only missing a story, I can at least give you some ideas to help you go forward. I'd hate to see an almost complete project go to waste. Having a mediocre COMPLETED game is 100 times better than having an excellent abandoned one.

Thanks for the replies everyone!
slash> I... actually never thought of that. Huh, why didn't I have it playtested? I'll try preparing a test project, and have it tried out.
cash/uni> Letting someone else make the story for your game is like buying food and asking some random person to chew it for you. At least, that's what I think. So no, I don't think I'll go to that route.
kyla/uni> This is my problem actually. I feel just a *little* bit burned out to work any further on it. That's despite the fact that I take frequent breaks away from the maker.
red> Thanks. I don't really have *that* much done, since I spent most of my timebreaking modifying scripts, so it shouldn't take any longer than a few minutes to see everything that I made. I'll prepare a test project in a jiff :)

Good luck :D
There's no way around it though, sometimes gam mak is just... work. Unfun, slogging through tough and boring work to finish something cool. It totally pays off and it's something to be proud of, but it's not easy.

Haha, but it doesn't have to be some random person off of the street. It can be someone who's really good at chewing! ;)

A game that "needs nothing but a story to get it finished" and one where you "don't really have *that* much done" seem contradictory. Is it just a really short game?

As it is now, without a story, the game's pretty ordinary. When I started this project, I was hoping for simple-ish gameplay and awesome-ish story. Since the gameplay part seemed easier to do, I decided to do that first.
Look where that got me (-.-;)
if you don't feel like working on it anymore, I'd probably recommend salvaging what you can and starting work on something else. there's a lot that you can only learn from seeing a game through to completion, but at the same time there's no point in torturing yourself if this is just a hobby, you know?
it can be easy to get yourself stuck in a loop of 'wow, I've learned so much making this, I should start over', but at the same time it's important to know when to make the call that your effort would be better spent somewhere else. whether or not you complete a project, your time spent working on it is never wasted; you've got what you've learned, and you've got what you've made, and you can bring that forward with you.

Yeah I probably only would consider it because I see someone who's really good at writing and I'm like "what if I combined his/her storywriting with my gameplay... we would be unstoppable!" which is a bit of an egotistical possible overstatement but it might be true, I hope it's true because then maybe we can create the next classic, just you and I babyyyyyyyyyyyy
I dunno how relevant this is to your situation, but, when I feel crummy, I have a few saved posts to boost morale. I should probably have a look at some of those, actually...
