I would identify as a 'Gamer' except that I don't hate women, so I guess I am not a 'real' gamer.

I hate people who cut me off in traffic, how many more hate points do I need until I quality as a Gamer™?
A low Hate score can be mitigated by a high Insecurity stat and a inventory stocked with Free Time. Though that way will require more grinding.
And we've come full circle. Gamers, who were once total losers, and then, somehow kinda cool for a while, are in the hate stage, soon to return to being total losers.
I like games but I don't know if I'd call myself a gamer... I also like movies and music!

So after reading more about gamergate or whatever the hell it's called, apparently the claim that she slept with the guy for scores was debunked as he never even reviewed her game... and they've only been targeting women who speak out and not bothering when the male supporters have been harsher in their anger towards the fuckwits.
I've always been proud of being a gamer but this new attitude is making me equal parts scared and fucking pissed off. Also resigned because honestly, not surprised.

They doxx any outspoken female game devs or voices, threaten them and their families with rape and death threats, and also threaten to engage in terrorist mass shootings at universities. Oh, but it also (somehow) about "ethics in game journalism".
Why do you need to hate women to be a "real" gamer?

Actually, avoiding the internet as a whole would be wiser if possible.

I like tumblr, thank you very much. Lots of fandom stuff there (where else am I gonna harp on about One Piece to like-minded fans and see neat art from all over the world, regardless of language barriers?)
Quite frankly, it's all about who you follow (don't follow me on tumblr, btw - I tend to reblog a lot of feminist stuff with the funnies and cutes and game shit... and fandoms. :shrug: I like the site. It's informative as long as you stay away from the crazy elements (that's what unfollow is for btw))

I'm glad there's places like here where I can be a little bit girly and it's not a big deal. Being surrounded by bros and having to put on that constant suit of masculinity can be really tiring.
Gamergate is trash. There's a claim that they have good intentions, but their honed focus on a few specific small-time developers and miscellaneous entities in games, overwhelmingly women, betrays everything. There are plenty of ethical problems in the games industry and with games journalism, and Gamergate has done nothing to combat them. The movement has only caused more agony by attacking miscellaneous individuals it dislikes and the organizations that support them, like Gamasutra, which has for over a decade fought for workers' rights, open and free knowledge of the industry, and education for novice developers.
It is a depressing, useless waste.
