Oooh, this looks like a good read! It's fun to read how other devs organize, so I can steal their good ideas.

Right now I'm a mix of Trello boards, Google Docs, and physical notebooks with to-do lists and design sketches. I can get away with a lot more of that because I work solo 95% of the time, though.

...That said, no amount of organization will get the actual work done.
Organizing things gives the illusion of productivity. It feels like you are being productive at that moment, but you're not! Taking time to organize, though, is done in the hopes of being more efficient/productive LATER.

Organizing pays off in the long run.

For sure! It can definitely increase the efficiency of your working hours - and honestly, having a checklist is an easy motivator for me; nothing is satisfying like ticking off boxes. But, if all you ever do is organize, you'll never get anything done.

Working in software development, the amount of time we've wasted writing code we didn't need is astounding, and a couple days of pre-planning would've prevented months of work (and many late nights).

I never use excel to orginize anything. Just a piece of paper.
