Researching Pixel Sprite Artist Prices for a SHMUP
I know this is a RPG site, but I'm putting together an overhead SHMUP and I've got 100 hours into the programming end (I keep logs) and its moving along quite nicely. While I don't need a pixel artist at the moment, I expect to need an artist in a month, so I wanted to get a ballpark figure... but not "bids." With any luck this will be a commercial game maybe for $3 - $15.
Right now I have around 30 types of common enemies that are 32px x 32px and some are 128 x 128, with 6 mini bosses that are at least 128px x 128x and 2 larger bosses that are 300px x 300px. I'm not going for a space shooter, I have something very different in mind.
Since its a SHMUP, I don't really think there's much need for animations other than glows of firing weapons, but that can just be an extra sprite added to gun barrels. I'd want explosions animations and the main ships would need to tilt left and right. Everything turns, but I don't think there's a real need for enemies to have a tilt animation, especially with so many enemies. Some enemies can have tilt animations, such as ones that fly while twisting their ship.
I'll need backgrounds that ARE NOT space themed and I'll be putting together interior levels with moving components. That's just speculation at this point.
*edit* After a day I've decided to limit the resolution to 712 x 400 for the resolution. The game is 60 FPS at least that's the current target, but I doubt it will change. I won't need 60 frames of animation for anything. It seems excessive.
Its been a while since I've been here, but I know RMN has always had a lot of talent, so I thought I'd start here first. Give me a ballpark per ship, because I'm sure I'll come up with more crazy ideas for ships and bosses.
Once I'm closer to needing the artist, I'll give more accurate specifics. I'll also budget enemies, bosses and backgrounds with whatever I hear back.
So far here's a list of what will be necessary:
- Menu: top, left, right, bottom, top left, bottom left, top right, bottom right, top right sides
- 1 Default Explosion for enemies (animated) (others may be necessary)
- 1 Bomb Style Explosion (animated) (others may be necessary)
- 1 player ship (left tilt animation, right tilt animation) (there will be more)
- 1 bubble shield (animated)
- 20 projectiles (7 animated) (so far)
- 15 item pick ups that can be different colors with a letter on them (animated or not)
- 2 additional pickups that must be unique from the items
- 30 enemies (no animations but that will have to be determined)
- 2 larger bosses (I'll have more)
- 1 slider + 1 knob for slider
- 1 menu arrow (the arrow may change to something better)
In all that makes for 70 sprites needed with maybe 10 animations (currently). That's all I have for now that are necessary, backgrounds and environments will be determined probably at the end of everything else.
