RIKGUENTHER'S PROFILE

I'm new to RMN but I've been working with various RPG Makers since early 2000. Currently balancing a project that has ballooned into a huge undertaking with a job I truly loathe.

Hero won't stop running downward RM2k3

Whenever I either test play or load the game normally my character just makes a bee-line south no matter what I press on the keyboard. It doesn't do this in the menus and it happens on every map. It just suddenly started doing it. Anyone have a problem similar to mine?

EDIT: actually, it seems like the down arrow isn't working in the menus. I can only go up. weird

EDIT AGAIN: I just loaded up Heroes Realm and it's doing the same thing. Let me try a different keyboard?

RPG Maker VX Ace Selection rectangle

I'm migrating over from RM2k3 and I'm loving everything I'm seeing... except I can't seem to find one of my favorite tools from RM2k3... the selection rectangle.

What I'm talking about is grabbing a chunk from the map and either dragging it around, copying/pasting it, etc. I see there are options in the menu for copy and paste but I see nothing in my toolkit.

I tried searching the help file included with the program but I'm not seeing anything. Any ideas?

Requesting a 16x16 charset template RM2k/3

What I'm looking for in particular is a template for making charsets with 16x16 sprites. I'm looking for just a plain nude body, both genders if at all possible. I'm trying to edit some Butz charset I found online but I'd prefer just having a clean template to just draw clothing and hairs on.

Anyone have one (or a few) I can borrow? Remember, I'm looking for 16x16, not normal sized charsets.

Leveling up and NOT getting stat boosts... Help?

I'm considering doing something different with the way my characters get stronger in the game. I want to eliminate grinding as a way of breezing through the game. I also want to help myself out with balancing.

When your characters level up, traditionally, they gain a multitude of stat increases. If you spend all day leveling up it tends to destroy any level of strategy the creator (myself) had tried to put into place. It also can help with the pacing of game when you don't have to stop and grind when you hit a difficulty spike.

I feel like this can open up some interesting parts in battle too. It can help alleviate the hum-drum of routine battles since you can't rely on your overpowered character and instead have to rely on strategies like taking advantage of your enemies weaknesses and... god forbid... use status magic to round out your weaknesses.

Eqiupment will increase your stats. Weapons, armor and accessories lend to stat increases. Need to do more damage? Equip a more powerful weapon. Enemy doing too much fire damage? Equip an accessory to reduce fire damage. There will also be "seeds" to increase stats too, like single use items to boost your attack a minimal amount.

Herein lies a problem. What purpose is there then, to leveling up? I was thinking about providing HP/MP increases. As you level up you get more stamina/increase your mana pool. This is kind of a weak benefit, but idk.

Long story short, I'm looking for advice from anyone who has experience with a system like this or just some general advice/suggestions. Any ideas how balancing will go with a system like this? Any possible hurdles you can think of? Any questions for parts I inevitably left out?

Mapping Woes (and Frustrations). Tips for a poor soul?

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I love mapping. It's one of my favorite things to do when working on games or just dicking around. I love making canyons, ravines, caves, forests, jungles, highlands, volcanoes, islands, etc.

If you notice, however, one thing I left out was towns/cities. I. Absolutely. HATE. Mapping towns.

It's easy for me to create a decent looking landscape. Everything gets really complicated and frustrating when I have to create towns. I just don't know where to put anything. I don't know how to assemble the buildings in an interesting manner. I don't know how to set the layout and flow of the town. Not being able to do something as trivial as making a map with buildings is really upsetting.

Does anyone have any tips/tutorials for mapping a town? What I'm looking for is kind of broad and difficult to articulate properly. I want to know not just HOW to place buildings but WHY they should go that way. I play other games and even in mediocre games I've noticed that the towns are either mundane yet not awful or absolutely awesome. I just don't seem to be able to absorb WHY they look nice.

Most of my towns end up being really boxy and rigid. When I try to move buildings around I usually end up with a town that has no coherence. Nothing seems to work that well.

tl;dr - I suck at making town maps, help?
