Was it in your house? My old roommate once set off the fire alarm at a dorm when he was trying to cook. Made the entire building evacuate.

It was in my apartment, and my overly sensitive fire alarms didn't help. I'm pretty sure they've gone off while I was taking a shower before, just because of the steam. Still... a small pot of water... I feel so bad for my neighbors.

Water vapor should not activate the sensor of a smoke detector unless it is weak. This means one of two things:
