I mean, I used to say 'gammakkin' a lot, but I don't think it really caught on to this extent so it's probably unrelated

the art of or just the name?
the term! it's been in fairly popular circulation here for a little while, so I'm wondering how and when it was popularized.

I like "gamiking" and "gammiker" myself over "gamedev", but I don't think those will catch on :P

I don't think I was around when "gam mak" got popular here, so I have no idea...

I'd really like to know this as well- I think it came from the time between my profile as Lennon and my profile as Pizza some years later, so I completely missed it.

It's certainly caught on even in my life outside of RMN. Me and my room mate say it all the damn time.
pull up a chair! Ol' grandpa kentona has a story to tell.

It all started way way back in the time of yore - there was a lot of yore lying around as result of the pigs y'see. The important thing was that I had an onion on my belt, which was the style at the time. I had a yellow onion, because of the war. You could buy a dozen yellow onions for a nickel. Now back in those days nickels had pictures of bees on them. "Gimme 5 bees for a quarter" you'd say. Now where was I... yes, well, "i maek gaem" was a facetious way to mock people who were hardcore serious into making our brand of shitty hobbyist RPGs, and we'd mock people who showed real passion and ambition at the time. "meh" was our slogan, and "who cares?" was our rallying cry. Because we knew better, of course, by default. Our current mood was "Just ate a pinecone", and we'd use Qs INSTEQD OF Qs. Our targ was above reproach. The depths of our wisdom could not be fathomed by the likes of the passionate naive masses. What began as a not-too-subtle insult morphed into a more purposeful and earnest meaning of GAM MAK, whereby it speaks to the process of developing games with a hobbyist mindset, being mindful of the limited scope of both your skills and potential audience but aspiring to create a meaningful experience for both the potential players who play the game and yourself while you work on the game. The masses have risen and mediocrity rules the day! Oh how I miss the times of yore!

Now go fetch grandpa his whisky and scadoodle outside. Grandpa needs his nap!
I feel like the Shroud of Turin just showed up and started reading me dril tweets
seriously though, I remember "maek gaem" being a term tossed around on GamingW with regularity, often with a demeaning tone. And I think "gam mak" was first uttered here with a bit of the same tone, but for whatever reason it was swiftly championed as a positive term for hobbyist not-so-serious game creation.

At least, that's my take on it.
I'm pretty happy with that progression! I was heavily, heavily into that same smug 'pff, amateurs' mindset myself until not too long ago, and it's good to see it falling out of favour.
The demeaning version of "gam mak" is so set in my mind that I can't bear myself to use the term myself.
it's just never really rolled off the tongue right for me, personally
I pronounce it "game make", like gām māk
So what would "gawm mawk" be like?

(I fully accept all PUNishment for that awful "joke")
gawm mawk sounds like a new-game-plus superdungeon
The superboss inside a giant flashing cat with sunglasses who attacks by insulting your ill-conceived battle plans until you just rage-quit.
to defeat it, you must remain steadfastly obstinate until the superboss throws up its hands and leaves, muttering under its breath

I always read it as "gam (like the term for legs) mack."

It's interesting seeing the etymology. I'd assumed it was just like my use of "vidya gaem" and now "garmes" just to keep things light and amusing because I am a flippant person.

COWARD. I WILL NEVER LOG OFF.
So what you're saying is that the Q stqnds for kentonQ?

Also, I tend to pronounce it as gammak - gah-mack (a bit like gimmick, but with a)
