'this game has gross and jarring fanservice + I don't dig that' should not be considered a dangerously controversial statement

Listen not liking things is the same as censoring them, unless they are the things I also do not like
This is one of those times where I wish I could like posts.
Kind of want to add to the point, but really, I've become so apathetic about this discussion over the last year or so that I don't have much to say in public about it, sadly.

I wonder if they’ll ever consider an option in the future to tone down the fanservice on something like the options page before starting the game up to cater to some of the overall complaints about it? In some ways, that actually might solve some of the problems with people going a bit nuts over it.
my issue with fanservice in new ip (i mean, i agree with your initial statement mawk and i'm also with you on discussion that sparked this) but like
if i'm not a fan of your work yet, i don't really care about seeing your characters in compromising situations or revealing attire or anything
bikini armor just seems so bizzare, it seems "LIKE THIS CHARACTER BECAUSE YOU LIKE SKIN RIGHT" and not "unlock the bikini armor costume 20 hours in because you like this character and think he's awesome for story-related reasons"
i never asked for this service up front, is what i'm saying.
edit: i still want bunny ears for men in ffxiv and it's my primary issue with the game

i don't mind people enjoying fanservice but standard fanservice often gets in the way of my enjoyment. welp.
I agree with you there, Craze! I'd much rather get to know the character and like them before I see them in what normally would be considered bikini or underwear levels of exposure XD
I'm not against fanservice in principal but I feel like it should have a purpose beyond "people will buy this because sex sells, right?" Either have it inform something important about the character, or go all the way and make the game about the cheesecake/beefcake.
This. Developers often fail to realize that it turns off some people even while it turns on others.

Yeah but why do you guys hate ~*empowered*~ women who own their sexuality? Please ignore the fact that this is not, in fact, a woman, but a character created and designed by me.
I'm not throwing a value judgement on fanservice in general here, so much as being frustrated that even talking about it in a personal sense (e.g. 'I'm weirded out by this') is enough to get people swooping in as though I'm getting ~too political~ and has people bending over backwards + expending sweat and tears to equivocate a sexualized 13 year old girl into something that's supposed to be beyond criticism
meanwhile, like, 'hey devs don't design characters while horny' has been a thing I've been saying since before I even particularly gave a shit about anything vOv
good for you but jsyk this is absolutely just the golden mean fallacy with bonus smug mixed in + is barely even worth saying
don't congratulate yourself on not caring how boring is that

It shouldn't. Nor should enjoying fan-service. Both sides attract too much vitriol. I'm more interested in whether a game is good or not to care.

Yeah, totally. -_-
You people. shm
Edit: Even as someone who doesnt feel the need to add "fanservice" to his works, I find this dog piling a bit much. Also, you love tossing that golden mean term around too conveniently.

e: is my use of it here incorrect? when somebody charges into my status to be all 'by the way both sides are wrong and I don't care :-)', is that something I should respect?
and is it really dogpiling to grumble about it in a status? you'll notice that in the actual topics I'm talking about, I've been very mild -- there have been multiple points reading that topic where I've said to myself 'yeah, no, this would be mean' and held off on saying what was in my gut.
there's this bizarre pushback against the most basic portrayal-based criticisms lately, and it's frustrating to deal with.

I also don't see how agreeing with mawk's status here is dogpiling. Being even the mildest critic of fanservice will get you shouted down in other parts of the internet. What's wrong about discussing it here?

Well, fanservice is more than just characters in compromising situations/attire. The definition of fanservice is, from what I've seen, something designed to excite the fans without necessarily relating to the main plot or focus. Yes, many times that includes sexualized characters, but to only refer to that when using the word fanservice isn't technically correct.
Mass Effect 3's acknowledgement of Garrus' Calibrations meme would also fall under fanservice, as well as cameos from other franchises, as it gets the fans excited to see it.
That being said, I still agree with mawk's status. Gross and jarring fanservice is a legit criticism and should be called out when appropriate.
So, by that definition, new IPs with overly sexualized characters isn't fanservice. It's exploitation. Gotta have fans to serve first, after all.

its more this that's getting a bit on my nerves, not to defend sated or anything.
Yes, let me stress again that I find fan service to be a bit overrated, and also state that it can often wreck something that has the potential to be really great.
It has nothing to do with the statement and everything to do with the frequency in which you make it. Regardless of the topic at hand.
