Awesome! Didn't expect to see ol' Jar Jar return as a Sithlord, did you? I guess that means you know eachother IRL; coool. All RPG Makers seem to come from the land of 'Murica.

Abrams did such a fantastic job on this. He kept the camera focused on the actors and not the effects. And the lighting!
In the scene with Kylo and Han, Kylo's face is bathed in half red and half blue, and then by the end of the scene, it's drenched in red!

I wish it had been more than a soulless remake of A New Hope. :( I kept waiting for something new, exciting, or surprising to happen but it never did.

I wouldn't really call someone who was constantly kidnapped/endangered to be a damsel in distress for the male characters to fret over a fresh direction for the series.

She was kidnapped like... once?

I agree that the movie is pretty much A New Hope with a fresh coat of paint, but that didn't stop me from enjoying the film. The new ideas (at least for the series) that it does play with all have promising potential.

It wasn't a bad movie, don't get me wrong, but I feel cheated that I paid money to watch a movie that I've already seen before. There wasn't a single surprise in the entire movie. At its core, all I expect out of Star Wars, or a scifi movie in general, is to see some cool, imaginative, otherworldly setpieces, but Force Awakens didn't even have that. Reskinned Tatooine, reskinned Empire, reskinned Vader, reskinned Hoth, reskinned Death Star.

Even the prequel movies had something new. It was an adventure story that was unadventurous, the only unforgivable sin it could have committed.

^Just proves you can't please everyone. When the prequels came people wanted a soulless remake and now that it's here they are like "We wanted it more like the prequels"

WHAT?!

I do agree that it was a little too similar to A New Hope, but in the end I thought it was pretty forgivable as a set up to the other two movies and as a way to bring Star Wars back into the movie world again (especially considering the babies of the Star Wars fandom would have cried bloody murder if it tried to be something wildly different right away).

I remember being pretty impressed by the dogfighting in particular- the ships moved very realistically in the air, which is something I never really expected to notice, but it was nice. I thought the Starkiller Base was way more threatening than the Death Star ever was, and it actually got under my skin a bit to be honest.

I'm more excited for Episodes 8 and 9, as I hear they're going to be very different and original. The tools for them to do so are certainly there, but it's hard to tell if they'll deliver on that promise or not.

All in all I felt it was about the same tier as the Prequels/Episode 6, which I do like, but aren't really mind blowingly fantastic movies or anything. (Side note: I saw Fury Road the night before I watched Episode 7, which blew me away, so I might have felt a little extra underwhelmed just by comparison)

You're magical to me.

I agree that the movie was no Fury Road, and that it had a lot in common with A New Hope. I still really enjoyed it, though ^_^

I don't necessarily think it should have been like the prequels, but that for all their failings, the prequels got some basic things right that Force Awakens missed.
Yeah, I really hope they deliver something more original in Episodes 8 and 9. 7 was decent, though I'm not exactly sure about the storyline...

Ain't nothin gonna look great next to Fury Road. That was a fukken well-made action movie!

ETA: Also if you are lookin at Star Wars for bold new territory you are probably in the wrong series and definitely in the wrong medium (that being "big budget Hollywood movies"). Star Wars is about pew pew lasers, space magic, and cool light swords that go BVWRRMMMPSH! Also neat spaceship battles and cute robots. All of which was all over this movie.

I haven't seen EP7 or all of Fury Road, both are pretty high priority. I'm usually late to seeing new movies right away, which is cool when the few times I am bored and have nothing to do.

I just rewatched The Thing recently for like the 100th time and I wonder if I could ever love a movie more. I'm like stuck in 80s and 90s

(fun fact: I own all the 3 3/4 Star Wars TFA action figures that have been released so far including vehicles)

Also this as far as I feel about saying Star Wars should be doing something "original" by now.

Both are super great big screen experiences, so if you can, def check 'em in theatre.

Yes, I don't exactly want to watch them on my computer :(
Me and a few family and friends are planning for EP7, but not sure when yet, I better hurry before it leaves the big screen.

I want goosebumps

RE: A New Hope remake. The Nostalgia Critic put it pretty well, I think: After the reception the prequel trilogy had, Disney knew that they were on thin ice, and that trying to do too much too soon would backfire pretty badly. In order to gain that initial trust/cautious optimism from fans, Disney had to prove that they could do a legit Star Wars movie well by replicating the formula for A New Hope: Passing the baton from the old cast to the new set of heroes. Now that that's out of they way, Disney has the green light to take the series in a new direction.

Of course, all that goes out the window if subsequent movies turn out to be carbon copies of prior films as well, but at the very least, I'm cautiously optimistic. While I never was a huge Star Wars nerd growing up, seeing the Force Awakens got me interested in following it again.
