RMN3 approaches June 2nd! Command?

WIP has been hard at work on Propello RMN3 since his triumphant return in January. The fruitful fruits of his labors are about to come to fruition as RMN3 is (tentatively) slated to go live June 2nd, 2009!

The focus of the site will be moving towards games, gamespages and game hosting. As such, game releases on the forums will be removed, and users will be forced encouraged to post their games and comments on the appropriate game pages. While this seems like a drastic change, most regular members won't notice that much of a different. We still have forums, it's just that Game Releases & Discussion will be dropped (as it is being replaced by much more robust game page directory).

Another AWESOME addition is the Locker: every member will now have space on the RMN server to upload any files they wish (well, not pr0n), starting with 10MB and increasing as their Makerscore increases. So write more reviews, get more space! Great deal, in my opinion. You are able to view other users' Locker and see the files they have uploaded. However, a user can opt for their file to be private which will make sure the file is not shown in the user profile. You are still able to link to it normally.

What's the Catch?
In WIP's on words: "The catch is that it is coming fast and not nearly as tested as I would like it to be. There is a good chance some parts will be broken or not work as nice as it should. I apologize for this, but there is actually a reason for pushing things out so soon. And really the best way to test is to force unwilling participants!

A few things might not feel polished. But after the initial RMN3 release, I am going to continue to further update the site at a much better pace than RMNv2 was."

Run?

Everyone's favorite event with exclamation points in weird places is happening again! The concept is the same as VI, V, IV, III, II and I (surprise!): we encourage everyone to release a demo or something on the 20th of June (Summer)(even if it is a half-finished or semi-broken demo project or OST or something) and then everyone plays everyone else's stuff and comments on it! (please!)

Emphasis on the Something.

The best modern RPG Maker game?
What great games have come out lately? missingno, in his quest to find a good game to play, asks us to recommend some new RPG Maker releases worthy of his time. He wants somethin' with story and setting.

Lame 4chan-memes aside, this has sparked a lively debate. Check it out.

Racial Diverstiy In RPG's
If you though The best modern RPG Maker games thread was active, check out the Racial Diverstiy In RPG's thread. This discussion took off like a wildfire this past weekend.

Lennon asks, "Something I've been wondering about recently. Why are there so many white people in RPG's? I'm not exactly complaining, but the only two black people that I remember from any game are Barret and that guy in FF8, and I can't even think of an RM game that has one black guy in it. I just found it really odd that there isn't at least a balance between black and white people in any RPG. Is there really any reasoning behind this (I hope not), and do you think it even matters?

Also I want to know if you have racial diversity in anything you are currently making or have made."

Join the discussion.

Band Art Game!

Released in the summer of 2006, "The spark that must not go out" catapulted lesbian pop singer Ride into superstardom. Ride's unique voice, mixed with the haunting lyrics on the title track, cemented the album on a top position on charts all over America.

RMN Mafia!

Mafia goons and townspeople compete to win control of the town.

Otokonokonokononokonokoko organized a fun forum game in Moronic over the past couple of days. For those who haven't heard of it, Mafia is a game that pits an uninformed majority (the town) against an informed minority (the mafia, also known as "scum"). Following a bevy of rules, participants lynch, shoot, roleblock and investigate their way to dominance over the course of several day/night cycles.

The first installment wrapped up yesterday, culminating in a vicious scene wherein the Mafia ended the lives of all who opposed them. Interest is high for a second round, now that the nuances of the game have become apparent.

Nobody may talk in the thread during the Night Phase. That is all.

RPG Intros, difficulty, monsters and trailers

How long should intros be? What should they contain? How is difficulty managed in an RPG, and what can we do to improve it? And do we make trailers to show it all off?

A slough of topics have cropped up over the past few weeks discussing various tangendental topics of RPGs:

RPG Intros by NoblemanNick
The RPG difficulty problem by DFalcon
How do YOU balance YOUR monsters? by Relyt
Trailers for amateur games? by BentoBox

Deeper - A Community Roguelike For RMVX

The return of the roguelikes

What is it?
Deeper is meant to be an addictive, fun, easy-to-learn, difficult-to-master Roguelike/dungeon crawl for RPG Maker VX. Design goals include a wide variety of races, classes, and items put in to an endless randomized dungeon with an open-ended storyline. Max McGee hopes to use the community's effort to create and release this endevor within one year.

Why should you care?
Roguelikes are a niche gaming category with a loyal and fervorant fanbase, but are generally a pain in the ass to make given the vast array of possible user actions and interactions with the game world itself. The fact that Max McGee - a capable developer in his own right - is spearheading Deeper and making it in a familiar maker (RMVX) is promising. The thread has already spanned 4 pages with eager participants posting their ideas. It would be great fun to join in.

Putting the spotlight on a oft-overlooked game

Take the Path of Justice!

"Pacman meets Super Mario on Rm2k3"
- VerifyedRasta

What is it?
Path of Justice, by Mitsuhide_The_Vagrant, is best described as a blend of Pacman and Super Mario, but with about a 90/10 split. The gameplay revolves around you collecting Power Gems in a series of levels to destroy the Tower of Darkness. Every so often the player must defeat a boss in a creative boss battle.

Why should you care?
Path of Justice is a neat game, very enjoyable and quite challenging. It is well worth the playthrough and is deserving of more than the attention is has gotten to date. Give it a spin.

Mog Notorious M.O.G. Feldschlacht IV

Why does this keep changing?
..:: Games :: Articles :: Reviews ::..

Feldschlacht IV is one of the community's most outspoken members, with a username so difficult to spell that you can't even pronounce it. But you can call him Mog. You probably know him best around here from the earlier RMNCasts, organizing the Play Something! events and being RMN's black sheep.

In his own words...

RMN HISTORY:
I joined RMN back when there was quite a few people migrating from GW. I don't think any one person in particular told me about RMN, but I knew about it through word of mouth and so on. It was really refreshing, and I settled in pretty quickly. A long time later, I'm still around. It's really grown from my very first post!

PERSONAL BLURB:
There's a lot of talk about what program to use, and how to make your games, and so on and so forth, but my motto is just make good games. I don't care if you're using RMVX or MUGEN, or whatever. Just make fun games that's fun to play that you're proud of. Forget the baseless arguing about what program to do it with, and just do it! Everything else will happen on its own. However, new ideas, genres, and progression is always welcome of course.

Also, get your nose out of your own game once in a while and play everybody elses! If you want your game to be well known and appreciated, you have to do the same to others. This means you. It's a flowing process.

SPARE TIME:
Offline, I'm big into cooking, physical fitness (one body, one mind!), and spending time with friends, family, and my dog. I'm also big into mechanics and the magic of the internal combustion engine.

FAVORITE FOOD:
Tuna salad. Everyone else hates it though.

FAVORITE SAYING:
"Do unto others as you would have others do unto you."

PET PEEVE:
Grudges.

LITTLE KNOWN FACT:
A few years ago in high school back in Pittsburgh, I was actually in a newspaper for winning a game making contest DigiPen held. I even won an Xbox!

geodude (a.k.a. Rockman a.k.a. RockmanNeo) for keeping it real. Seriously, sometimes we need to lighten up.

I... I like tuna salad...!
Nobody else seems to!
Ahhh, the old "over exaggerate Oto's nick" gag. How I missed you.

Additionally, the second round of Mafia is based off of the Iron Gaia universe, and can be found in Moronic. As of this post, it still has two spots open, so GIVE IT A WHIRL!
I'm always there for you Oto.

I am disappointed to learn that no one new downloaded Path of Justice since I mentioned it in the Hidden Gem segment.
MY GAME WAS FEATURED IN RMN SNEWS!!!! *squee* Sorry, I greatly appreciate some attention being given to my game, I didn't realize it was this liked. Thank you!
@ Kentona: So you really think "Path of Justice" is considered a 'Hidden Gem'?
I think so! It was a surprising amount of fun and a neat take on the Pac-man genre. I think that more people should play it.
This actually motivates me to start more work on "Path of Justice 2". And, yes, I've already done some preliminary planning to make it before this point, but this...this is great motivation! Thanks again!
