Description

Did you hear about the Children of Heaven who longed to see the blue and green of the lower world for themselves, disobeying the laws set for them in order to reach down the earth below? Cast down for their defiance, left in confusion while the stars above them burned, one among them rose up and claimed a piece of that land for her people.

Perhaps you have heard of the Journey of 1000 steps, with the heroic youth who climbed forever to reach the lost Fruit of Life to aid his dying mentor? Or the story of the lost lamb who led her owner on a merry chase over mountains and valleys, through dungeons most deep and cities most fair?

How about the tale of the three sisters competing to prove their worth as possible heirs to their failing father, a King once grand? Through hell and high-water they travelled, finally finding their way to a compromise, only to lose their home to the newly awakened Daemon Lord. Have you heard of the battles fought in their name? Of the lives given to reclaim that throne?

Let us venture into the world of RTP's untold stories. Meet the heroes, the foes and learn their tales. Listen... can you hear the deepest secrets they keep?

GET READY FOR AN RM VENTURE!

This is an event focused on the creation of a game within a week, in celebration of RPG Maker's Birthday~

The idea of the competition is to create a compressed story with at least one boss battle. Short games are in season and as such aiming for under an hour is the key. Dare you unlock the door to the hidden treasures?

For each aspect of your game that is deemed of sufficient quality you will receive a badge. There are five in total - the first for completing an entry in the time limit (Badge of Stepping Up). The second awarded to that one entry which wows the judges and is deemed the best (Badge of Excellence).

The four are as follows:
Badge of Tales (Writing)
Badge of War (Game Play)
Badge of Beauty (Aesthetics)
Badge of Senses (Atmosphere/Sound)

Every entry is eligible for each of the three. If the judges deem your work of sufficient quality in one of the categories you'll receive that badge. They stack, so you can gain all three or, in unfortunate cases, none. So polish those gems before releasing them!

The winner of this contest will receive something special in addition to achievements!

Epilogue

And now for the Feedback Arc! Everyone knows that a good story has an epilogue, so let's start this one!

Want a badge but didn't create a game in time? Then look here~ A nice badge or two for you titled the Badge of Discipline and Badge of Devotion. And how can you get your hands on these lovely pieces? Easy.

- Write at least 150 words worth of feedback or your thoughts on each of the 22 games submitted to the event OR four full reviews.
- Post this feedback in a comment with the title 'Feedback' at the top. Bold that title and set it to 18pt font.
- In the case of reviews, post links to the four of them in a single comment with the title "Review" at the top, bolded and size 18.
- For anyone up to the SUPER DEVOTION CHALLENGE - write 22 reviews all up. You will receive the Badge of Devotion.

- Judges will review your comments, check that they're of sufficient length and if all is fine, award you the badge.
- Judges will also check the reviews and award badges after all are in.
- You have ten days to play and feedback all the games/review four or all games.
- Enough feedback/reviews will unlock a podcast. Liberty will personally see to it that this occurs and will round up everyone to take part. She will take hostages if she has to.

You must use the RTP default characters. You can use different graphical styles for them, but they must be recognisable as the default database heroes.

Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

There must be at least one boss battle, using one of the last bosses of either the 95, 2K/3, XP, VX or Ace RTP.

Games must have a story. Said story doesn't need to be heavy but there must be at least something resembling a plot.

All games must be under an hour long from start to end. We do not want towering epics of 20+ hours. If your game is noticeably over an hour it will be forfeit.

Complete games only.

Games must be started only on or after the 8th of February. You may use resources you already had, but the actual game must only have started at the beginning of this event.

Games must be in by the last time zone of the 15th. Exceptions may be made if there's a good reason - PM one of the judges in this case.

You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

You may use any RM engine your little heart desires. Only RM though. It is for the RPG Maker birthday after all~

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

Can we use scripts?
Yes. Have at them~

Are we allowed to have more than one project if just one member? Can a team have more than one entry?
Sure, if you've time.

What graphics/resources can we use? Do we have to use RTP? Can we use different tiles?
All, no, yes.
Basically the only restrictions are thus:-
You must use the Database characters. You can choose whatever style for them you like, but they must be recognisable as that character. For example, Alex in DS style is fine. Pink-haired Alex in DS style with a tuxedo... not so much.

You must use at least ONE of the Database last bosses as a boss. (You can use more.) They must be recognisable as that boss, but again, any graphical style is allowed.

You may use any music, graphics and sound that you wish. ;p

Bosses:-

And the Medusa from 95, I do believe (I may be wrong but she has the most health by a lot - 7000 vs 3000)

Heroes:-

95: Fess, Lena, Marcus, Agatha, Amy, Khar, Luts and ...Slobodan? ( >.< ???)
2K: Alex, Brian, Carol, Deiji/Daisy, Enrike/Enryuu, Arkon/Falcon, Homes/Gomez and Helen
2K3: Zack, Albert, Burns, Klaus/Grace, Arthur, Edith/Ardis, Feylin, Alissa/Alica, Mia, Elene/Eolen, Cinthya, Melissa, Fiona and Mao

XP: Aluxes, Basil, Cyrus, Dorothy, Estelle, Felix, Gloria and Hilda
VX: Ralph, Ulrika, Bennett, Ylva, Lawrence, Oscar, Vera and Elmer
VXA: Eric, Natalie, Terrence, Ernest, Ryoma, Brenda, Rick, Alice, Isabelle and Noah

Can we mix and match characters from different engines?
By all means, go right ahead. A Dimensions-like game could be interesting to see and there's no limitations on who you have in your party as long as they're part of the above group.

Do we only have to use the Database heroes? Like, for NPCs and whatnot?
Your party has to have only Database heroes. NPCs can be anyone or anything you want.

If I make my game with VX Ace, the boss batle Battler must be from VX Ace as well?
No. Mix and match as much as you want as long as it's one of the above Bosses and it's in one of the RM engines.

Do I HAVE to keep the default hero names?
Yes. As Nessy put so nicely: "Yes, because this event is about making a story for our beloved RPG Maker Database Heroes! It's their birthday after all :D!"

Do we have to use the default statistics and skills for the characters and bosses?
Nope~ Not at all!

DO EXCUSE ME! Our game was perfect with extra cream and a cherry on top, no need for assumptions! XD

Except a couple bugs and that problem with the torches, but other than that!
Because they're often very rough, in both the way they're written as well as the content. I'd rather refine my thoughts after the fact or not at all. I don't like sharing initial thoughts, ever. The ONLY time I share them is when I write reviews or during instant-reactions in LP/Ts. Notes are for me, not for the creator of the game. They're usually silly things too. For example - and I won't name names:
"Tale isn't bad but meh." or "I could be playing Bravely Default. I am not. I am playing this. :/ "

I, personally, do not like to share those kinds of things because not only does it make the creator of the game feel bad and give them the wrong ideas, but also because sometimes you have to be within my own mind to make sense of them, my feelings about games change and - sometimes- I can't read my own writing since I write them down in a pad while playing so I don't lose the thoughts.
I'm not fussed about hearing the judges thoughts on every single entry or even my own one. The only thing I would really want to know is why you chose the winning game, what is was that make it stand out.

Also, if there was runner up, how did they miss out on the top spot?
Frankly - and again, this is just me. I'm not speaking for Gourd or Ocean - but I care.
I care if my words affect newcomers in such a way as to drive them off RMing or make them feel as though their games are worthless.
I care about showing off my initial thoughts on games because I reprise them after thought.
I care how well-written and well-put my turns of phrase are.
I care about how I put across my opinions as a judge.
I care about how spoiled you're all getting when it comes to judges delivering information about what we did and did not find good/bad about a game. No podcasts every time. No huge written piece dissecting your work. Maybe now and then but not each and every fucking time.

You may get a sentence or two from me about each entry at most, and yes, I'll make sure to put why I - personally - chose the winner, but that's it. I was tasked with judging games, not with spoiling people by giving them all and every thought that passed through my head when playing the games. You want more? Get someone to LP or review your game. That is not my job as judge.
Clearly me, Caz and Starskipper spoiled the community.
To the contrary: I found that Caz and Fomar's biting words of my RPG Maker game were apt, because I knew that my game was bad. I just wanted to know why.

Not that we should *expect* you to release the notes, but it's always nice if judges do. It'll be preferable, but it's optional. In other words, you clearly don't want to, so you shouldn't. But I would like to see Gourd's/Ocean's opinions if they want to.
So I just have to win in order to get your feedback, right? *wink wink*.
I'm fine with showing my notes to anyone who asks for them via PM, but I don't want to publicly show them.

Welp. Yeah, podcasts are nice and all, but unfortunately they are not feasible for every contest.

(I didn't mean to be critical of you though. Also I never actually asked you to share your judging process. I was reflecting on why you might not want to.)

if I'm going to be 100% honest, I don't think this is the type of tone that should be projected by the more notable members of one of the biggest RM communities around. Wasn't there a big drive on playing and critiquing games as well as making them, once upon a time? Why the huge about-face?

Calling constructive feedback 'spoiling' makes me a very sad YM.

There will be more podcasts, but it's up to the judges and their schedules really.

I'm sorry if anything in here from other users seemed icy or out of tone. We love doing the podcasts and absolutely agree that they are one hundred percent beneficial to the game developers, events in general, and the community. However, they are a time sink and sometimes they are not feasible due to the evil real world. Sometimes we just don't have it in us and nobody should be faulted for that. We got where we are on RMN through volunteer work and it's quite amazing that we've been able to get this far to begin with.

I don't think you guys are spoiled. If anything, I feel like I failed by dropping the ball on Fall Podcast Part 4. Hell, we have some unresolved things related to last year's Halloween contest, such as achievements. I find that unacceptable, and it's mostly on me. With that said, there's not some contract that mandates podcasts, etc. (Would be awesome though!) In other words, we really want to hold them - and we'd love to critique every single game around here if we had the time and energy - but sometimes they just aren't feasible, and we're ultimately just volunteers.

I'm sure the judges will be providing adequate rationale on their decisions. All three are extremely competent and well rounded. Theirs will be fair decisions. But a laundry list of criticisms may not really be in the cards here, especially since a lot of the notes may not be in a format appropriate for formal display :)

I do agree with you, but at the same time...She has already expressed that she doesn't want to share her notes in regards to the judging and such. She probably felt like she's being pressured to still share her views when it makes her uncomfortable or obligated since the users specifically requested her to do with their certain games.

And in turn, her notes are probably written in such a way that can be scathing or how people will view her as a person differently because she didn't really write in a sense that is for the public eye.

This happened to me when I wrote my first impressions to a specific game while I was playing and didn't even bother to clean it up to be non-offensive. The creator got so upset and depressed, the viewpoint of how people think I view things as a player/game designer has been skewed too. And that wasn't my intention. And I'm pretty sure that isn't the intention of the judges presented here.

Not everyone takes feedback the same as others, so it's very important to be on the safezone when reviewing/leaving feedback as a whole. Which -is- additional work. And it's already tiring to play 22 games in a week. That kind of thing is something that needs to be done voluntarily.

Liberty is the most passionate for RMN out of the staff and has been the prime cheerleader for feedback and such, but there is only so much she can take and do for the community before feeling like she's spoiling them. I have the same feeling when I make free resources too.

I would've liked a podcast though or some sort, but maybe it has to be not the judges but different people to take the wheel.
Yeah I think maybe Liberty misinterpreted some users' comments as pressure that YOU MUST CREATE A NEW PODCAST or YOU MUST WRITE WRITTEN REVIEWS FOR ALL GAMES but I don't think that was peoples' intention. I think they just would like a few sentences about their game so they can improve. I certainly would at least like a little comment by the judges to acknowledge that my game was either funny or not funny or fun to play or not fun to play. So to Liberty: don't be pressured to make a podcast or anything, we're not *expecting* these things from you, all we're doing is asking whether they will exist or not. And I think at least a little bit of feedback is OK to ask for from judges of a contest. Cheers all ^_^

This is exactly the problem though. She already said no. But there were questions as to why she shouldn't when she should. That's how some of the comments came out to me. A lot of contests only comment on the winning entries. You barely see for other entries.

But I do understand where everyone is coming from. ;w;

I don't think Liberty misinterpreted, but it's one of those things where it's all about perspective. I can understand the perspective in that she has really gone out of her way to make this community what it is, and sometimes it's just impossible or unreasonable to go that extra inch yet again.

On the other hand, I can totally understand that going that extra mile is what RMN was built on. The only reason we are where we are - and why we were established to begin with - is because people busted their asses with a focused goal. We are servants of the community in a lot of respects, but it has to be partially on our terms. At the end of the day, we just have to all remember that the people who help out are indeed volunteers and volunteers have other priorities to balance.
When liberty meant spoiled, I believe what she definitely means is that she feels like we overindulged the community with frequent podcast/detailed reviews when contest events happen.

It would be nice if like in Reviewrim, some of the userbase too can take time to review the contest games too without any achievement/prizes in store for them when they do those stuff. Just like the judges ;w;

Yeah it's a situation where everyone has to step up. If only a few people are heavily involved in the judging process, then it's not spoiling everyone else really...but it is putting a strain on just a small group, which could lead to burnout. When you go above and beyond, people tend to expect it to be sustained. But to really sustain things, it has to be a group effort that goes beyond just that small group.

Users like Unity are taking the time to play the contest games. This is what the soul of our site is and should be about. We are here to cultivate each other. Network. Learn. Master. I absolutely love and respect any user who goes out there, plays games, reviews games, LPs, comments on the forums...even if I don't show it, and even if we have disagreements, I never, never, lose respect for someone for being active in a non-malicious manner. Feedback must go beyond the judges. This site relies on people like Addit to go out there and give these games some attention. We need more of those. Right now the balance between development and actual playing is heavily out of whack.

You made a good point with reviewrim: a lot of users made a lot of awesome reviews. It would be nice if more users took such initiative. We still have a lot of unreviewed games out there! :)

Not to brag, but I have a job and a life and I still found time to review 24 games in a week. Frankly, this community has done so much for me, and has put up with some unfulfilled promises on my part, that I feel that doing anything less would be an equity issue. But it is nice to get something back in return. Many reviews are not reciprocated...hell, some people don't even post a reply when someone reviews their game. Let's all give and take :)
