Description

Did you hear about the Children of Heaven who longed to see the blue and green of the lower world for themselves, disobeying the laws set for them in order to reach down the earth below? Cast down for their defiance, left in confusion while the stars above them burned, one among them rose up and claimed a piece of that land for her people.

Perhaps you have heard of the Journey of 1000 steps, with the heroic youth who climbed forever to reach the lost Fruit of Life to aid his dying mentor? Or the story of the lost lamb who led her owner on a merry chase over mountains and valleys, through dungeons most deep and cities most fair?

How about the tale of the three sisters competing to prove their worth as possible heirs to their failing father, a King once grand? Through hell and high-water they travelled, finally finding their way to a compromise, only to lose their home to the newly awakened Daemon Lord. Have you heard of the battles fought in their name? Of the lives given to reclaim that throne?

Let us venture into the world of RTP's untold stories. Meet the heroes, the foes and learn their tales. Listen... can you hear the deepest secrets they keep?

GET READY FOR AN RM VENTURE!

This is an event focused on the creation of a game within a week, in celebration of RPG Maker's Birthday~

The idea of the competition is to create a compressed story with at least one boss battle. Short games are in season and as such aiming for under an hour is the key. Dare you unlock the door to the hidden treasures?

For each aspect of your game that is deemed of sufficient quality you will receive a badge. There are five in total - the first for completing an entry in the time limit (Badge of Stepping Up). The second awarded to that one entry which wows the judges and is deemed the best (Badge of Excellence).

The four are as follows:
Badge of Tales (Writing)
Badge of War (Game Play)
Badge of Beauty (Aesthetics)
Badge of Senses (Atmosphere/Sound)

Every entry is eligible for each of the three. If the judges deem your work of sufficient quality in one of the categories you'll receive that badge. They stack, so you can gain all three or, in unfortunate cases, none. So polish those gems before releasing them!

The winner of this contest will receive something special in addition to achievements!

Epilogue

And now for the Feedback Arc! Everyone knows that a good story has an epilogue, so let's start this one!

Want a badge but didn't create a game in time? Then look here~ A nice badge or two for you titled the Badge of Discipline and Badge of Devotion. And how can you get your hands on these lovely pieces? Easy.

- Write at least 150 words worth of feedback or your thoughts on each of the 22 games submitted to the event OR four full reviews.
- Post this feedback in a comment with the title 'Feedback' at the top. Bold that title and set it to 18pt font.
- In the case of reviews, post links to the four of them in a single comment with the title "Review" at the top, bolded and size 18.
- For anyone up to the SUPER DEVOTION CHALLENGE - write 22 reviews all up. You will receive the Badge of Devotion.

- Judges will review your comments, check that they're of sufficient length and if all is fine, award you the badge.
- Judges will also check the reviews and award badges after all are in.
- You have ten days to play and feedback all the games/review four or all games.
- Enough feedback/reviews will unlock a podcast. Liberty will personally see to it that this occurs and will round up everyone to take part. She will take hostages if she has to.

You must use the RTP default characters. You can use different graphical styles for them, but they must be recognisable as the default database heroes.

Games must have all files included that have been used. If you don't know how to set it so that no RTP is required, just ask.

There must be at least one boss battle, using one of the last bosses of either the 95, 2K/3, XP, VX or Ace RTP.

Games must have a story. Said story doesn't need to be heavy but there must be at least something resembling a plot.

All games must be under an hour long from start to end. We do not want towering epics of 20+ hours. If your game is noticeably over an hour it will be forfeit.

Complete games only.

Games must be started only on or after the 8th of February. You may use resources you already had, but the actual game must only have started at the beginning of this event.

Games must be in by the last time zone of the 15th. Exceptions may be made if there's a good reason - PM one of the judges in this case.

You may have more than one team, more than one game. Teams of up to ten are allowed.

You may use any RM engine your little heart desires. Only RM though. It is for the RPG Maker birthday after all~

Any questions and queries, ask in the comments below.

Can we use scripts?
Yes. Have at them~

Are we allowed to have more than one project if just one member? Can a team have more than one entry?
Sure, if you've time.

What graphics/resources can we use? Do we have to use RTP? Can we use different tiles?
All, no, yes.
Basically the only restrictions are thus:-
You must use the Database characters. You can choose whatever style for them you like, but they must be recognisable as that character. For example, Alex in DS style is fine. Pink-haired Alex in DS style with a tuxedo... not so much.

You must use at least ONE of the Database last bosses as a boss. (You can use more.) They must be recognisable as that boss, but again, any graphical style is allowed.

You may use any music, graphics and sound that you wish. ;p

Bosses:-

And the Medusa from 95, I do believe (I may be wrong but she has the most health by a lot - 7000 vs 3000)

Heroes:-

95: Fess, Lena, Marcus, Agatha, Amy, Khar, Luts and ...Slobodan? ( >.< ???)
2K: Alex, Brian, Carol, Deiji/Daisy, Enrike/Enryuu, Arkon/Falcon, Homes/Gomez and Helen
2K3: Zack, Albert, Burns, Klaus/Grace, Arthur, Edith/Ardis, Feylin, Alissa/Alica, Mia, Elene/Eolen, Cinthya, Melissa, Fiona and Mao

XP: Aluxes, Basil, Cyrus, Dorothy, Estelle, Felix, Gloria and Hilda
VX: Ralph, Ulrika, Bennett, Ylva, Lawrence, Oscar, Vera and Elmer
VXA: Eric, Natalie, Terrence, Ernest, Ryoma, Brenda, Rick, Alice, Isabelle and Noah

Can we mix and match characters from different engines?
By all means, go right ahead. A Dimensions-like game could be interesting to see and there's no limitations on who you have in your party as long as they're part of the above group.

Do we only have to use the Database heroes? Like, for NPCs and whatnot?
Your party has to have only Database heroes. NPCs can be anyone or anything you want.

If I make my game with VX Ace, the boss batle Battler must be from VX Ace as well?
No. Mix and match as much as you want as long as it's one of the above Bosses and it's in one of the RM engines.

Do I HAVE to keep the default hero names?
Yes. As Nessy put so nicely: "Yes, because this event is about making a story for our beloved RPG Maker Database Heroes! It's their birthday after all :D!"

Do we have to use the default statistics and skills for the characters and bosses?
Nope~ Not at all!

If people just play each other's games and share their thoughts I think we can get a general idea of how we all did outside of the top few. Maybe we could make a separate topic for discussing that or something.

The judges only have to decide the winners and give a general idea of what set them apart. They don't have to explain why each individual entry was worse, no judges in any contest do that. *Scratches head* it seems like I managed to be the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back and I'm sorry for that.

And Yellow Magic, being judged for her "tone" just because she's a notable member of the community is the entire reason Liberty doesn't want to share her notes.

Nah, we're all on the same side here. I think we all understand what's best for the community and that our volunteers are not superhuman. But frustration and disappointment, even regarding volunteer work, are real emotions that are easy to convey online for both the volunteer and the community...and such articulation can be unavoidable. Sometimes it helps for us all to just type about it and bounce things off each other, ideally in a civil manner.

We all know that more feedback is a good thing. But feedback requires user initiative on a broader scale to avoid burning out the small group of hardcore volunteers.
When I say spoiled I mean every time expecting detailed information, notes and/or podcasts. And I stand by that. I don't care what my tone says. I already said part of the reason I don't want to share my notes is because some of them are extra harsh and would possibly drive new makers out of game creation. Which I do not fucking want.

Today I gently let down a new person on RMW who wanted to team with me to make a game. I pointed them towards tutorials, gave them ideas about how to start creating a smaller game first before a large one and told them that if they needed help to send me a PM.

I am and always have been for the people in the forums. So when I say we, as a forum are getting spoiled, what I am saying is that each and every time an event is held there is always that one little chirper, who is soon added to by other people chirping, who wants. What do they want? In depth feedback. Podcasts. Rational for what game got picked. More MS. Less MS. Everything.

I - as a judge - am not here to provide detailed feedback. I am here to pick the best game and, if questioned which I assure you we will be because it never not happens, provide rationale for why we picked the first place winner.

I'll leave you a sentence or two, perhaps, but it's not in the judge position manual that we have to give you all our thoughts on games, podcasts and the like. And expecting such a thing makes us spoiled.

So yes, I think we're becoming a spoiled mentality that demand things like podcasts and in-depth reviews. If we're to share in-depth notes we might as well write some fucking reviews and get some MS for our troubles.

If nobody is going to let go of that word "spoiled" in this context, then perhaps we should consider this: if we all want to be spoiled, then let's spoil each other. Give a little, receive a little. If someone reviews your game, consider returning the favor. It's not like you have to (and if you don't want to, then don't) but it's those things that help build a community.

Reciprocation is what community is all about. We do better than most, but we could be better!
Ok thanks Liberty for all the hard work you do. We really appreciate it. We understand it is your choice to provide feedback and we thank you for judging the contest and playing all of our games.

I do understand the expectations. I do. Every community has expectations and quite frankly we are servants of the community. But, alas, we do have limits and we really appreciate it when users understand those limits. We can't deliver all the time, and it shouldn't be held against us when we can't - unless we're delivering false promises, which I don't think we have (in this sort of thing).

We've wasted too much text on this thing, myself included. It's okay to have expectations. It's not okay to get upset when said expectations can't be met when they are already going above and beyond. Most people on RMN understand this. A couple of people might make a quick comment (a "chirper" as Liberty put it) but that's not the majority and I think we're making it out to be some big issue when it's not. Even those so-called "chirpers" don't really have malicious intent. They know what's going on here, but they just wanted to say something out of disappointment. It happens. We all do it from time to time in different ways.

This community is patient, understanding, and logical (for the most part). It's more than we can say about most communities. Most people around here have reasonable expetations and understand when things can't be done. Let's not let a couple of people's relatively innocent if unfair comments blow it out of proportion...

...but let's get more reviews in the queue and more constructive comments on game pages. Everybody wins! ;)

Decky~ Let me 'spoil' you with my 'fist'. ;p

Look, rereading the last page or two of comments, I'll agree I came off a bit grumpy but frankly, why am I not allowed to be? Why call me out for my 'attitude'? It's not like I was cursing each and every person and their mothers' fathers' mothers. People get grumpy, they get tired and just because I'm a mod and have a 'more visual place in the RM community' doesn't mean I'm a queen or PM who has to watch their every word. Or should I be asking kentona for a crown or title or something? (I mean, I know I'm called the RTP Princess but that's not really a title, guys. XP )

I'll share something with you about why I'm adamant about not sharing my notes.
Firstly, when I write them I write them for my eyes. This means they could reference things that people have no idea about because they haven't experienced them before.
I also write harsh notes when I come across something really annoying or aggravating. Things about pet peeves that I just hate but aren't really for judging purposes. Things that I remind myself not to do.
The notes aren't for eyes aside my own. The only reason I release the notes for my reviews are because when I write those they are expressly written for those reviews - I keep 'myself' out of them. Not so with judge notes.
Lastly, and most importantly, I have always been a huge advocationary about the honey/stick method of feedback. Three bad things to every good. When judging I don't write down good. Thus I don't wish to discourage people from creating.

When I first began RMing I was in a small community - one that didn't survive. There was someone I looked up to a lot in that place - someone who was a 'pillar' and seemed to know everything about 2k and how to use it. I didn't idolise them but I did want their approval. So I asked them to check out my newest game - the first game I showed.

What I got back from that reveal was very painful and it hurt me a lot as a new creator. It seemed all I received was criticism and hate over a game that I was proud to have made. People even jumped on board and began agreeing and nit-picking even worse than 'Sempai' had. I left that community, deleted the game our of shame and almost gave up on creating games altogether. The only reason I'm still here is because someone PM'd me on another forum that I was debating about leaving too, and told me that the game wasn't quite that bad, that there were good things about the game that they liked, that I shouldn't take everything the people of that community said to heart and that they could see promise in me as a game creator.

That's why I am still with the community. I grew as a creator, obviously, and I stuck through criticism and learned to tell what to keep and what to throw away when people left feedback, but when I leave feedback I make sure that what I say is carefully chosen. I compose it in my mind carefully before putting the words to 'paper' because I don't want to drive a promising young new creator away - like I had been. So no, I don't share my initial thoughts on a game.

I think on it, and if I need to write something I make sure there's some good with whatever bad there is because sometimes all it takes is one kind word to make a difference - and the way I judge doesn't include kind words. I keep them in my head and remind myself to detract from the game the bad points which I easily forget.

Every time I'm a judge on an event I either LP all the games and/or do a podcast and still people complain about not enough being done. Do you think about what goes on behind scenes? Answering questions, checking comments to see if we haven't missed one or that at the end there's a game download that was missed. Never mind coming to consensus about badges, MS amounts and the actual judging process itself - finding the right time to talk together when we're all in different time zones.

Frankly, it's a lot more than just "Play games > pick best".

And don't get me started on the review events. Thanks to the way the event pages were set up those were a nightmare! Constant double-checking every post to make sure we grab each and every review so everyone has their fair shake of the lambs' tail. And double-checking each review that wasn't added to the site for whatever reason to make sure they meet standards and then double checking the links when they broke that one time and sent you off to games that weren't even in the competition... orz

I'm all for reviewing and sharing each others' thoughts on games. We don't see it as much during the creation events and we should - we used to get a lot of people commenting on each others' games as well as a judges input. Sadly, people stopped commenting and that apparently is fine, but let a judge decide not to...

So, in lieu of that lost co-operation, I propose a last badge. A new badge. One for people who give good feedback on the games. Open to all. The Badge of Discipline.

Each person who writes at least 150 words about every game will - apon judge discretion so no-one tries to free-load their way through - receive this badge and the MS that goes with it.

As an added incentive, if enough people do this, we will find a way to arrange an official podcast of the event. Granted, Gourd may not be able to jump in but perhaps we could persuade someone else to take position for him in this case, and he could still take part of the chatroom in it, so someone could read out his thoughts too. We'll find a way to make it work. But only if enough feedback is given.

I'll add the guidelines to the OP.
@Sated - I am done talking on the subject. Needless to say both sides are in the wrong and frankly, I'll admit that but I've given my reasons three times and I'm not going to change my mind. No need to keep poking dead horses. So... stepping over and beyond that in the hopes that we can get on with the show...
-====================================================================================

Updated the OP with the rules of the Prologue.

So for expedience sake here they are:

Starts as of now. Ends one week - Sunday from now. If you don't have enough time to do this... :x

This is an excellent idea; the judges already have a huge task ahead of them, so letting the rest of the community do their part and help out is the way to go, in my opinion. I've already played most of the games (though not all of them to completion yet) so I'd like to be the first to try for this new badge; expect a post from me on that soon ;) If I'm not able to play all the games in time, I'll still release all my notes.

Also, is there a place to volunteer for things like being a judge or other stuff? I may be jumping the gun since I'm still a newbie here and I'm not sure what qualifications I'd need to fulfill for such a position, but if you all need judges for future events or anything, I'd be happy to volunteer.
We'll keep you in mind for it, unity and LWG (;p). Usually it's whoever is free, whoever comes up with the idea among staff, or is keeping an eye on it. People can come up with ideas for events during down-seasons and PM a mod/staff member and we talk it out to see if there's anything else going on, help with getting it ready and event paged.

Most of the time if we need another judge we post in the status - which I did do this time. Then was recommended Gourd and he jumped on board. So, yeah, it depends. If it's someone's own event idea - like with the Pokemon one - we just keep an eye out and help set-up.

But I'll personally make a note of your readiness and if we need another judge on another 'staff' event I've your name. Newness isn't a major detriment, and seeing you around helps a lot too. ^.^
I'm going for this badge. Sated took down his game though, but I guess he's not really interested in feedback!

Thanks a lot! :D I'm going to be sounding like a newbie again, but you mentioned "post in the status." Is that the "Status History" link in the community tab? I feel silly as I totally haven't been keeping up with that, but if event-related posts are there, then I'll definitely keep an eye out from now on.
Yeah, usually if we need someone we'll either contact people we know or post in the status feeds (visible on the community page). One reason why the community page is better than the straight forum page, imo. ^.^
150 words per game? Some games don't merit that many words, imo. For example, I played Rhyme's game yesterday and I really liked it, so all I could think of saying was practically: "I like everything about your game". ...I guess, I could strain things out a bit by talking about the format or the mechanics, but, quite frankly, I don't feel like counting my words when giving feedback.

Oh, well. Probably not the right challenge for me anyway~

Question: how do you review games that have no gamepage? i.e. Tale of Alice, Maker Gear Rising and Game linked in the OP. Do I just post a review here in the comments to make up for that?

Wow, yeah, I see! I've just been using the straight forum page all this time! Haha, you learn something new every day ^_^
@AE: Point out things you like, things you think should/could be done differently - that always helps pushing up word limits. Also, if you break it down into categories you'd be surprised how much you can churn out about a game.

@Cashmere: Post them in the comments under a hide tag, I guess. Just make sure we know they're there so we can count them to your name. ^.^
