Description

We've had a few game dev events in a row now with several more on the way later in the year, so let's take a little break with something a bit more chill!

The aim is to make a short, playable experience with up to 5 maps, taking place in any type of interior area (Cafes, aquariums, schools, museums, etc). Submissions must be more of an interactive exploration sim than a game.

If you need an example for this type of game, check out Apartment Simulator on the site, it won't take any longer than 5 minutes of your time.

RULES
- Max 5 maps. Max map size 50x50 each. No minimum size.
- No gameplay (cutscenes, battles, endings, puzzles, etc) but small interactions are okay.
- Your maps must all be indoor areas.
- You do not need game pages for this event.
- No minimum playtime required.
- Your entry must be made entirely within the event's timeframe.
- Any engine, any resources. If your engine isn’t tile based, or you’re making a 3D entry, take the 50x50 map size limit as an approximate guideline. I’ll be lenient as long as what you make is within reason.
- This is a solo event, and teams are not allowed.

REWARDS
  • Somewhere Nice - 40MS
Submit an entry to the event.

  • Guest Rooms - 20MS
Play and provide feedback on other entries during or after the event.

Thanks so much Frogge, im glad you enjoyed the egyptian atmosphere <3

And now I was able to play Ulevo's "Checkar Building":
Very cool earthbound-style graphics! I love the cute interactions of looking for a coin for that phone call. Really cool nostalgia and nice hallway maps.

So, I played through what was available yesterday morning. So sue me. I'll try to keep any updates to maps/entries in mind as I make my commentary. No particular order with these.

lavendersiren's entry ...

...had the right amount, and kind, of interaction to make their entry fun. The passibility issue that aquatorrent mentioned earlier was still present (and I've not seen an update regarding that or I'm blind, but, other than that, it was put together really well.

Scourge's entry...

...felt to me like it was something taken from a larger game/concept to fit within the context of this event. I've no issue with this (especially since I basically did the same thing), and was certainly allowed. However, I'm not familiar with their other works to say if the game/concept in question is already made, or in the process thereof.

pianotm's entry...

...was cute as all hell, but, I'm also a huge sucker for cameos. There was one transistion from the main concourse to the game room that threw an error at me, but... I think that was noted already?

CrazyBabi's entry...

was more creepy/spooky than cozy! Not that this matters, but, it made the entry a bit more stand-out. There aren't too many interesting things to interact with here, but, the doll is probably the most notable thing to interact with.

Soulrain's entry...

...I want to know how the hell they programmed the announcement board. Like, I can understand the underlying theory of using actor names to store the data to display, but, as to how they used that data to display and scroll the way it does in-game? It baffles me. Maybe I'm just severely underestimating 2K3's capabilities. Though, if I must be honest, I think it could be a little clearer that there's a console in front of the conductor's chair. Still, going to Ludicrous Speed got a smile from me, and the radio was a nice touch.

aquatorrent's entry...

...at least when I played it, was very compact. It almost felt claustrophobic. I kept clicking everywhere, trying to figure out if there was more to this place than just the one map, to no avail. I dunno if it's been updated with more maps, but, I'm at least interested to see what kinds of interactions have been included.

Ulevo's entry...

...wears it's Earthbound inspiration on it's sleeve, and I have zero qualms with that. I don't recall hearing any BGM, but, maybe I'm just being forgetful?

Starmage's entry...

...had it's own vibe, and nails it to an "E" a "T". The quips from Gigi are a treat, sometimes giving me throwbacks to quips from a certain other character/game.

If I had to pick a personal top three favorites from this event, I think it would be pianotm's, Starmage's, and lavendersiren's.

Commentary for the entries I've not experienced.

Frogge's entry...

...was pretty neat with the region-based music changes, if nothing else. It is a bit unfortunate that the last floor was unfinished, but, what is there is quite pretty to look at.

Irog's entry...

..was pretty interesting in figuring out what was considered an obstacle, and what wasn't. There is a certain amount of sense to being able to crawl under a table, among other things, so I think the underlying principles work. I'm not sure if how one is able to navigate this area is the only interaction, or not, though.

Might as well retry auqautorrent's entry...

...and it was much better. Right up there with lavendersiren's entry with these quips. I think it might also be less crowded than I recall? I might just have a really bad memory.

Thanks so much Marrend for playing and I'm glad you enjoyed the castle and Gigi's character. <3

Now for the last entry,

Frogge's Cozy Aquarium:
Really cute tileset and maps. I enjoyed watching the sea creatures in the aquariums. There's so much variety and the creatures have a name tag that makes it fun to explore around and learn about them.

Also, I replayed aquatorrent's entry now that some interactions have been added. They helped bring the map to life a lot more, nicely done!

Thank you!

I actually didn't update anything except for the interactions. As for the maps, i misunderstood the rules (again). Since i don't have any experience with mapping, i thought the rules said that i could only make a maximum of 5 rooms. I planned to make a second floor but i scrapped the idea because of it. It's harder for me to put it in now since i have resized the rooms whenever i think they are too large (which explains why you felt claustrophobic; i might have gone too far with it), so i decide to keep it as it is for now. Anyway, thanks for the feedback! They are very helpful.

I did a terrible thing, I guess. with zero interaction because I'm bad at time management.

I left it in the note but erm in case ppl dislike notepad, but I forgot to include a exit/quit game thing so just ALT+F4 to close the game.

Well....Sorry if you're playing this mess of mine. Thanks?

I dunno if there will be more entries/updates with maybe an hour left, buuuuuuut, a bit of commentary for the new entry.

JustAShyDoge's entry...

...I'm certainly unfamiliar with unity, so, I dunno how long it took to put together what's here. However, aside from randomly getting stuck behind the chair in the back of the room, this was a pretty neat experience. I dunno if it was intentional to be able to walk on the counters, though, on the other hand, it's not simply a matter of pressing forward and having the player avatar moving on top of them. There might be a trick to it. Not sure how to explain it better.

*Edit: The Master Association for the Renovation and Research of Experimental Nacelle Developers made a statement today, encouraging additional visitors to Derram Station.
My potato cannot run JustAShyDoge's entry. Q.Q
It is not responding as soon as I opened it, although the bgm is still playing.

Last minute update, literally. Because I like to live dangerously *puts sunglasses and poke eyes, ouch*

-Fixed the collision detection issue Marrend mentioned(both kitchen counter and stuck in chair, thank you marrend!)
-Removed motion blur as well.
-And erm...yeah I have no idea what to do with crazybabi's issue. Mash any button I guess, that's somehow a common issue for beginner unity game maker like me ;-;

the newer version on event page is now x86 as well so...yeah, no more forced x64 bit device only. (Unity is hard and Idk what i'm doing man.)

Oh, you can also press the ESC button to quit the map now.

I forgot about this so I just made a shitty inn map here
I really enjoyed the Winter's Night. The music was the first thing I noticed - it was a perfect song and it did not get replaced by anything else. It felt like a really creative way to have me explore out of the order I usually would and do some storytelling in a small area. It was a bit weird to have a lot of emphasis on sexual stuff, including somewhat non-consenting. And I wish some of the characters would switch up dialogue.

I do not know how to play Cozy Aquarium....

Derram Station confused me a lot. It seemed like there was no progression and even the changing values thing seemed to have no impact. I wish they had some names to them if there is more than one. There was a character with a face who would obviously seem important, but I could not find a way to get money. I thought one of the songs would be Clubbed to Death when I heard the first ten seconds or so.

The Train Sim was simple, but it may be one of my favorites. I did not expect that cool animation and it was one of the few things that really felt comfortable out of the entries. I have never seen a train from the front before and I am sure a lot of people have not.

Oh yeah, and Cozy Places by pianotm had really impressive art and pretty fun architecture design.

It was actually fully intentional to allow access to the F9 debug window in Derram Station, and that it wouldn't do any good. I even lampshade that as a news item...

In other news, the Master Association for the Renovation and Research of Experimental Nacelle Developers made a statement that one can press F9 to call up a window that grants access to certain variables and switches. However, how much good that will actually do a person is questionable, at best.

...that appears after the regular/random news item when you interact with the "tv" objects.

*Edit: As for the faced NPCs, well, let me be blatantly honest, here. They both cameos from my previous works. One certainly has a more storied history than the other.

*Edit2: Was Winter's Night the entry that used "Moonlit Night" from the Suikoden series? I forget the precise version that was used there, but, below is a YouTube video encompassing the version played in each main-line entry from that series.

I'm sorry that some of you found my train simulator to be too simple. The problem is that I didn't exactly have that much time this week to work on the game. I was going to add landmarks that you could explore outside the train, but those got cut. There were also going to be more passengers that got cut. Honestly I was lucky that I managed to record the WMID lines in time.

July 29th was my dad's birthday, and we had a whole week planned for it, so that's why I wasn't able to do everything I wanted.
Frogge - Cozy_Aquarium

The aquarium is so full of life ! You've created the true atmosphere of visiting an aquarium. Each Room has its own theme and vibe. Perfect use of color filters and musics. And so many species of fish! (How did you get all of them?). There such a great attention to the movement of the various fishes. The transition between the rooms are really smooth and the elevator animation is topnotch. It runs like a charm in EasyRPG.

Soulrain - TrainSim1

The train carriages are really simplistic and I think the conductor section should be smaller. I like your use of the mode7 but the side ways jitter should be off in this mode. The left side of the passenger carriage is shaped like they could be other carriages but I don't know if they are any. When I press Esc, the menu shows that Zack has no portrait (I'm using EasyRPG so the game doesn't crash on missing assets). Your game has very funny interactions. That guy who turn around to face me and says "Zzzzz..." made me laugh so hard. I changed the destination to "Applewood" for the kid then I tried "RMN" in the hope to trigger an Easter egg. When I activate the Ludicrous Speed I'm pushed back and can no longer reach the admin panel (I couldn't find the run button and couldn't interact with the passages while being pushed back). This reminds me so much of the Spaceballs and made me laugh so hard as well. Upon retry, I noticed the window image change: nice touch ! I like the selection of iconic musics the radio can randomly plays.

I got them with a lot of pain and suffering, but I think it paid off. The real answer is that I drew and animated every single one myself except for the crocodile, swordfish and stingrays (which are all from the Time Fantasy animals pack). I'm not a great pixel artist but I'm really happy with how all of those came together *_*
Frogge, you did a very impressive work on your fish pixel art. You should gather them in a RMN marine resource pack !

I'm using Linux and I tried to run your game in Wine but failed :-( If your engine can make a Linux build, I'll be happy to test it.

lavendersiren - ahouse_lav
A nice cozy house with all the modern equipment and a friendly pet waiting for you. It gives the tranquil feeling of been back home after a busy day. Unfortunately, I don't see any text. I'm running your game in Linux using Wine; so Windows fonts aren't available and can't be installed. Is there a way to add a font folder in your game and tell it to use a font in that folder? On the first floor I'm able to walk over a book shelf in the bottom right. I like the 45° degree corners of the first floor rooms than show the tilted ceiling.

Scourge - Winters_Night
Your inn has the warm feeling of starting an adventure. It also has all the classic elements of a fantasy medieval tavern; spiced with the right amount of humor. Upstairs, each room contains elements that nicely flesh out the personality of the character in that room. I reached the basement before I read the clue about it. But it's always good to have a clue to help the player. There was a pleasant reference to Warhammer and a clever break of the 4th wall.
