Description

Welcome to the Mini Music Challenge, wherein participants will compose a piece a music that conforms to the requirements and theme (once revealed). After the submissions deadline, we will all listen to the submissions and vote for a winner!

The last one went over so well I thought I thought I'd do another quick one.

  • This event will consist of a single phase.
  • Participants will be able to sign up and submit their works anonymously using this event page.
  • Votes will be counted and published at end of the event. The person to receive the most votes wins.
  • The composers will have approximately 2 weeks to compose their piece. This will be followed by a short voting period.
  • MP3 is the preferred format, but MIDI and OGG are also acceptable.
  • The composition must be a new and original piece composed specifically for this event.

Short but Effective
There was an ulterior motive for naming this the Mini Music Challenge. For your submission, you are required to keep your piece to 2 minutes or less in length! Can you convey your desired musical aesthetic under this artificial time constraint? You're free to use any kind of instrumentation and sources of sounds you wish.

Riding the Airship!

Let's go to far-off places, and search for treasures bright! Our heroes have obtained an airship and are cruising around the world in an exhilarating flying machine, flowing through the skies with the greatest of ease! But is your RPG a high fantasy? Perhaps it is a steampunk airship? Or maybe it is a futuristic flying device?

Good luck to all the participants!

Argh!!! Just as I'm almost finished reviewing half of the songs my laptop went low-bat!!! *grumbles mumbles* K ones that are bold are my favourites.

3- WHAT. Either it's trying to clash on purpose or just inserting notes randomly.
10- Ooooh harpy and flutey. Doesn't fit the theme though.
20- Really really creative.
19- Noice start. Very airshipy. Also feels like a song for a bazaar.
23- Love the drums. Hammer hammer hammer hammer. :P
25- Really love it. The instruments are in perfect harmony. ^^
15- Kind of starts off slow but immediately captures you slowly. :D Has a gameboy feel to it. The kind of music that makes you bob your head, yah? ;)
9- Sounds more like a temple song rather than an airship one. Not bad though.
21- I lav it. <3 I don't care if it doesn't suit the theme, it's awesome. <3
16- Vibrato makes me laugh. In a good 'lolwtf' way.
24- Cringeworthy to say the least. WHAT THE HECK HAPPENED AND WHY THE HECK WAS THERE FINGER SNAPPING IN THE MIDDLE?!
17- Oooooh!! *dances to beat* Grooovy baby. You know your stuff! *thumbs up*
14- Nice drums at the start. Though that electric bit that popped up after that... I've got... mixed feelings about the tune. o_O It grows on you after a while though.
6- Doesn't feel like an airship theme, but I like it. Love the piano. <3
5- The piano seemed to be clashing with the other notes?
22- Decent song but lacks the "BOOM BOOM BOOM" "DOOT DOOT DOOT", get the gist? x)
12- I got backstabbed and I want my revenge. I'm slowly starting to get stronger each day and until that day comes, I'll just have to do what I have to do. Er at least that's what the song made me think. o_o Excellent piano work btw. 8)
26- WUT WUT.
8- Same with Dudesoft. Wished the drums could kick in earlier. All in all not bad.
18- Gives off the "here comes trouble" vibe. Nice cymbals at the end btw. *winks*
1- Detective feel at the start. I actually like the DOOT DOOT DOOTs.
13- Doesn't sound like an airship theme but more like a shop?
7- I am in mourning.
2- Getcha weapons ready!
4- Same with Kentona and MrChearlie. I'd put this in my game. :3
11- Reminds me of Skyborn somehow. Nice job!

After all being said and done, I have to say my vote goes to.................17! Sorry 11. :/ Maybe next time? xd

E 3 - Too spontaneous. Hard to hear the melody.
E 10 - Too repetitive for me. Could have added more instruments at some points.
E 20 - Didn't think I would hear something like this. Creative, but doesn't sound like an airship theme.
E 19 - I naturally like electronic stuff, so this is one of my faves. The whole time I was thinking "what software is that?".
E 23 - Meh. Not exceptional, but not bad.
E 25 - Cool piece. Could have used more instruments for a less repetitive composition. Ending was just a fade out instead of conclusion. Software intrigues me.
E 15 - Has a grooving support, but lacks a real melody.
E 9 - Seems to nonchalant to be an airship ride. Unless your riding over a grave yard or something.
E 21 - Very ominous. When I think of an airship though, I think happy and adventurous.
E 16 - Gets boring for the first half. Way too repetitive!
E 24 - Rhythm is hard to follow, chords are annoying, and the continuous bass guitar sounds odd on it's own.
E 17 - In the first couple of seconds I was into it. The beat was very radiant. Really sounds like an airship! I like it most because it constantly changes. Still don't like fade out endings.
E 14 - Like it. Techno airship. Loses airship feel at some parts though.
E 6 - Rhythm keeps changing (cool). Kept my attention until the very end where it got a little annoying. Ride of wonder.
E 5 - Sounds RTP-ish. Errrgh! More fade out! Pretty good though.
E 22 - So peaceful. Like floating on clouds. I imagine it could be sped up for a different feel.
E 12 - Makes me think of the recovery after a sad time. Not really an airship, but awesome sounding. Software sounds much better than Mario Paint Composer!
E 26 - Cool piece. Definitely made in Mario Paint Composer.
E 8 - Love it! Very futuristic and entertaining! Cuttin' it close at 1:58 though!
E 18 - Reminds me of Earthbound for some reason. Rhythm is adaptive. Airship theme isn't present though.
E 1 - Beginning is great. Middle is great. Ending is great. What were you thinking Clyve?!
E 13 - Mysterious ride. Reminds me more of a boat than an airship.
E 7 - Sounds like funeral music to me.
E 2 - I Agree with Kentona. EPIC BATTLE. The only other thing that comes to mind is a volcanic area.
E 4 - Awesome airship using mostly piano. Thrives.
E 11 - Great mix of instruments for this airship. Like an on board orchestra!

My vote - E 17. Good mix that still sounds like an adventurous airship. 17 is an mp3 though Clyve.

For those that had trouble with Entry 13, here is the direct link.

my thoughts: nice starry ride! Maybe a nice little balloon ride theme. Good work! *
So how sucky is mine
Kentona: Ow
Dudesoft: Sounds more like Bowsers Castle
Ivoryjones: Cringeworthy and he has noticed that faulty snap in the middle
Blobofgoo: Annoying and Odd

Final: Annoying, Odd and Cringeworthy Bowsers Castle music that no-one likes with a fault in the middle... I thought that might happen...
If anyone votes for it, I will watch Monty Python and the Holy Grail until I know it by heart
Don't worry, mine got mixed reviews too! :D
My songs tend to give off weird/inappropriate/funny vibes to people so yeah. x)
Oh and I actually thought Kentona's review of your song was the least harsh of all. o.o

I guess I'm pretty good at evil dream temple songs instead of airship themes XD!
On a more realistic note, I have to say that right now what I'm about to say is more or less an excuse than anything else. I guess I didn't try hard enough, I need to do my ABSOLUTE best to beat at least some of the better people, or get to my small goal of at least 3rd place.
Really though, most of my songs give me a surrealistic vibe anyway, so if the next music contest deals with surrealism, give me 1st place at the start...
than again it deals on if it's good or not, but nonetheless it would be surrealistic beyond belief...
It bothered me the first time I listened to it, and now it's come to me.

Entry 17's chords from 1:10 onward are the same as in "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" by The Smiths.

/me swooshes

There are a bunch of songs in here that are really nice musically but don't really convey "airship" to me :< As for my vote.. I have no idea ._.

17, 8, and 11 are my top three. Tough choice!

I have to give the nod to 8!

By-entry notes:

#3: souNds lIke mR. saTurN's gOt aN aiRshiP!
#10: Fells more like a wind-swept field than an airship. Maybe that's just me?
#20: I can't say I like this one. Sorry!
#19: Some parts sounds vaguely familiar, somehow! This could be a possibility.
#23: Sounds more like a jungle tune than an airship tune.
#25: This totally works for me with as an airship theme. Possibly!
#15: Has a certain old-school charm. Possibly!
#9: Not sure what to make of that, actually.
#21: I'm thinking this one's a "maybe".
#16: Not sure about this one.
#24: Hrm. I think I'm going to say "no" on this one.
#17: Definitely a possibility!
#14: When it hits it's groove, it's pretty good. Decent techno-ship, theme. Possibly!
#6: It might be a decent peice, but I'm not getting the "airship" feeling from this.
#5: Like #15, it has that old-school charm. Possibly!
#22: I can see this as overworld music. Airship music? Maybe!
#12: If this is airship music, what has happened to the world? Something terrible and tragic, I think. Possibly!
#26: Sounds like a really bad re-recording of something that would sound cool in it's original format.
#8: Okay, I can fell this one. Possibly!
#18: Doesn't hit any notes with me. Pun somewhat intended.
#1: Hrm. I'm going to call this a "maybe".
#13: I keep getting a broken version of this. Even kentona's "fixed link" didn't get me anything! So... I can't really judge this!
#7: I'm not really getting that airship feeling from this tune.
#2: I likes it! Does it fit the theme? Not... really. Maybe a little? Hrm.
#4: Sounds more like ending credit music than anything else.
#11: I think I could fly to that! Possibility!

It's situational, but I like the tone that #12 brought. However, I'm thinking entry #8, by participant #29, was tops for me.

Go entry #8!
I really enjoyed this contest. Will there be another one soon? Next time I plan to work on my song until the deadline and make it perfect, plus making music is really fun so if you can please make another contest soon.
I started late and didn't finish in time, but this is what I ended up with:

Dudesoft
always a dudesoft, never a soft dude.

For me, the best ones are:

Participant #21 - event_entry_17.mp3 (even though the percussion should be toned down a bit)

Participant #25 - event_entry_22.mid (an airship cruising a peaceful world)

Participant #36 - event_entry_2.mp3 (a futuristic airship music, Wild Arms also had a futuristic airship music)

Also, I think that music feedback should only be given after the voting period.

These comments may (will) influence the votes.

Well they didn't sound that similar to me. o_O Some people mentioned that some sounded like FF, Legend of Mana and other games (haven't played those yet) so it's probably normal if some of the pieces reminded you of other music.

But aren't the feedbacks always been like this?

Oh and deadline's tomorrow. Vote and give feedbacks please!
Dagnabbit. I just realised I uploaded an old version of my entry instead of the final mix. I know it's too late to resubmit, but just in case anyone's interested, here's entry 15 with human drums (instead of a loop) and properly mastered: http://rpgmaker.net/users/Faenon/locker/AIRSHIP.mp3

Just because they've always been like this doesn't mean they need to continue to be like this. But it was just a suggestion.
They don't have to look at the reviews if they don't want to. Plus giving feedbacks after the competition kinda ruins the fun.

I liked the first one better. The renewed one seemed too fast.

I might add that this is under construction, hence why I didn't take the credit for it!
Voting should end in an hour! If you haven't voted, do so soon!
