Description

Talking Time has a problem. We've been impulse-buying RPG Maker and various RPG Makery DLC every time someone announces a sale in our RPG Maker thread. This stuff's only purpose is to help us make RPGs, but we never actually do anything with it!

Well enough's enough! It's time to stop filing this stuff away in various oddly-shaped glass jars and get down to business. Nobody's gonna get anything done unless we have ourselves an event.

So here's how it works: Using RPG Maker, members of the Talking Time forum must compete to design a fully playable RPG. It doesn't matter how much time we have to work on it, because who does anymore? We're adults, we've got things to do. That's why this is a "release something" contest. When the deadline strikes, we must release something. It doesn't matter if a game is finished or not; the point is to prove we've made progress. The more a contestant's work resembles a finished product, the better!

Here be rules for our contestants:

  • you're allowed to share your RPG as a work in progress, for constructive criticism.
  • You can collaborate with each other as much or as little as you want.
  • You may use a game you've already been working on.
  • If your game is meant to be a commercial product, you'll want to take reasonable steps to ensure that anything you post here is something you don't mind giving away. (Like a demo version.) These forums are public and it's possible for anyone to find out about and download anything posted here.
  • If you intend to include an extensive soundtrack in your game, please spare us the bandwidth and only bundle the tracks that actually get used in the game as of your release.
  • Try to use music that won't set off Youtube's Copyright Strike robots in the event that your game manages to score a gameplay video.
  • Please respect your players' time. Keep your text and your walk/run speed fairly fast, and if you use random encounters, keep them fairly brisk. The moment the player groans and slams the Enter key is the moment you've failed at this.
  • Balance your game so the average player will never have to resort to grinding. If a player skips fully 50% of the available XP between them and the next intended boss or miniboss battle, they should at most have a tough but not impossible time trying to beat it.
  • You may release things ahead of the deadline, but when the deadline strikes, you should release an update with more (or at least merely improved) content.
  • If you intend to release something on the day of the deadline but are unable to do so, please post a notice so we can hold it for you.
  • The deadline will only be extended if at least one person actually releases something to meet it and expresses a desire to keep going.

Winners will be judged based on how finished their work appears to be. See what we come up with! It'll be fun!

What if I don't have a Talking Time account? Can I still participate? (I signed up ages ago, but it was never approved). Also, the end date for this event coincides with the HB Games winter game making event, http://www.hbgames.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=315&t=77833 , so if you are so inclined, you can submit your completed RPG there for a chance to win VX Ace.
All the discussion and peer review is happening at Talking Time proper. You might want to try getting in at Talking Time again, account activation there hinges on following the instructions in the current How to Register thread. Should be a smoother process than it was ages ago.
There's nothing stopping you from participating either way, but it might come off as a second-class experience without being able to post at Talking Time.
Might be interesting to contemplate if I knew where those forums were. Google results seem a bit ambivalent about which site we're actually referring to.

That one.

I have an idea I've wanted to try for a while and I might just find time to try it.

PS: I go by Cobb Tocs over at talking time, not that I post there, mostly just read the LPs.

So pretty much we need to release something before the deadline of March 1, 2014.

Are there any rewards for this? Do we need to be a member of Talking Time or have any idea what it is to participate in this?

Oh hey, a thing. This is the perfect excuse to get my butt in gear.

If you want the discussion at Talking Time, it might be a good idea to include a link to the thread in the description.

But it would probably be smarter to host discussion here instead, since everyone gets notices.
any engine or any enterbrain engine?
Hi guys, would just like to confirm that entries for this will be accepted in [the HBGames contest] so long as you follow the guidelines; there's still just under a month left and every chance of winning, with some cool prizes going including RPG Maker VX Ace. Consider it a ~bridging~ exercise.
Just a quick note that I've posted a project page for my entry though I don't have a download up at the moment; haven't quite finished framing the first town and dungeon yet though I should be able to get that done before the deadline and thus have a bit of gameplay available beyond wandering around an empty town and castle.

Okay, entry submitted. Please check the game's blog for mechanical deets.
My entry Dark God Rising is now ready for your consideration.
Remember, the end date for this event coincides with the HB Games winter game making event, http://www.hbgames.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=315&t=77833 , so if you are so inclined, you can submit your completed RPG there for a chance to win VX Ace.
Hey look, a deadline has struck!

At this moment it seems we have only three entries out of the nine people who signed up.
Is there anyone who was participating that might need some more time to get a release together?
