WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW?
Posts
author=LinkisThe thing I don't get was that even if the teacher who heard the beeping thought it was a bomb, why didn't the first teacher point out that the thing was a clock? I'm having trouble seeing why the kid was arrested in the first place. Can anyone imagine that happening if the kid was white?
As I read the story this morning, the firt teacher understood what the 14yr old boy had made but suggested he not show it to anyone else.
In another class a teacher heard it ticking.
With all the trouble schools have had lately, the teacher decided being safe was better then being sorry for the loss of many other students.

According to wikipedia, 90% of arabs are muslim, 6% are Christian and the rest is... Well, the rest. Now maybe wikipedia isn't always 100% correct, but a quick google gives me similar results (most above 90%). There are some parts of the arab world which doesn't have a majority of muslims, but the vast majority of arabs are muslim.
I make sweeping generalizations because I am talking about a large group of people. It's basically impossible not to make sweeping generalizations in this case.
I'm not sure why you are so persistent in declaring that most arabs aren't muslims, because they clearly are. And that's the problem, see: My post with the stonings and lashings.
I have read parts of the Quran, but not the entirety of it. I haven't read the whole Bible either. But I've read enough of both books and met enough people of both faiths to form an informed opinion.

I am not saying that most Arabs aren't Muslim. Most Arabs are Muslim. I am attempting to avoid all of us being lumped in with a very small minority of psychopaths who do not represent the Muslim community at large. And as for that Wiki article...you should know better than cite an encyclopedia as a source. While those numbers are probably close to the true percentages, representatives of Baha'i, Judaism, and Christianity would also contend with them, citing religious movements that must remain secret in regions where not being Muslim is punishable by death, especially the Baha'i faith, whose largest movements are in the Middle East.
And if you think that a group of madmen represent a religion as a whole, then your opinion may not be as informed as you think.

Whenever my fundamentalist christian uncle gets started with the whole idea that all Muslims are about all the violence, I tell him that's like saying all Christians are about all the multiple wives.
He then gets very mad and stops talking to me. Which, while I didn't win the argument, is still a win in a different way.
I can imagine it happening to a white kid. US public schools in cities with triple+ digit populations are the epitome of paranoia. Bringing in something that looks like a hollywood bomb doesn't even require that kind of psychosis to question. But the cops and the handcuffs are a bit insane, to be sure.

Well, the fact that not being Muslim is punishable by death in those countries speaks for itself about how good of a religion it is, I think.
I haven't even mentioned anything about madmen. What I am talking about is the religion as a whole, not some minority group. The way they see women, the way they are told by the Quran to treat people of other faiths, the way they threathen and in the worst case kill anyone who doesn't follow silly laws, the way that it's almost impossible to have a stable mindset while raised in that culture, the way that being a Muslim appears to be an all-encompassing, all-consuming identity that overrides and trumps everything else.
author=SnowOwlSounds like Christianity to me m8

Unless your point is all religions are equally silly, which I agree with, but saying Islam is worse than any other religion simply because of people in certain countries who practise it is a bit short-sighted...
You could say the same about Christianity, sure, but not to the same degree.
All religions are silly, some are silly in a way that kills people. You could argue that all religions kill people, but most did the majority of their killings in the past. Islam is still going strong with its ass-backwards views and killings. Islam is worse than most other religions. It's also a very big religion, which makes it even worse.

I beg your pardon? You mean it doesn't sound like the government? I seem to have heard of a time when it being anything other than Christian was punishable by death. I'm terribly sorry for pointing out these glaring logical fallacies in your sectarian perspective, but it is a bit personal for me, but don't mind me; I'm just pleased as punch that you think there isn't anything inherently wrong with us.
Edit:
You could say the same about Christianity, sure, but not to the same degree.
OMG! You really have no idea, do you? You actually think Fundie Christians have evolved past the burning-witches-at-the-stake phase of their beliefs!
author=SnowOwlIt's worth noting the relative levels of education of predominantly Christian countries versus predominantly Muslim ones... Also, Islam is the youngest major religion and, over time, its followers may have less, uh, strong opinions about the types of things you have issues with - as is what happened with Christianity and (I guess to an extent?) Judaism.

Christianity is still used in plenty of places to ruin peoples lives and harm people. Islam does too, in some countries, for sure. But both of those religions (and many other religions) have flaws in their texts, and that doesn't mean their followers support those things. The Bible has a hell of a lot of terrible stuff in it that luckily people don't follow (even if things like homophobia still run rampant).
People use religion to justify harmful things, for sure. But it's inane and shortsighted and stereotyping to believe that all followers of a religion believe those parts of it. There's a huge beautiful culture and history behind all of 'em, and I can understand why people don't want to abandon that, and simply choose to leave behind the worst parts of their religion.
TLDR: being a follower of a religion doesn't mean blindly adhering to every single tenant from centuries ago, y'know?

The region is also fairly unstable right now, which tends to make people overly dogmatic and autocratic. It's not actually any different than Fundie Christianity in that regard. (Which pretty much runs on the fears of it's adherents.)

Exactly! Fanatical religion is a symptom, not a cause.
Most of the followers still practice the parts they don't support though, so i guess "good for them" for not supporting them, can they stop practicing them now? They can't in most cases. Their cohort's pressure and in some cases government pressure such as with certain countries, still demand some practices to be followed (such as public leashings and stoning), so in what degree does understanding and acceptance help if they don't affect the action or practice?
author=GreatRedSpiritIf that's a picture of his "clock" then i would have thought it was a bomb, disregarding the kid's nationality. Mainly because i know nothing about electronics or how to recognize one thing from the other if it doesn't have certain easy-to-recognize features a clock is supposed to have.

Which makes me wonder how Fox news is going to headline it.
CNN did pull the tweet. I'm guessing Fox News will post the same, give a "sorry you bought in something teachers thought was a bomb", and suck the dick of the local pd.
author=Yellow MagicI have no idea, which is why i said i'd disregard that. Crazy people, paragons of stability, who decide one day that the best way to express their discomfort is to shoot up a school or do something equally stupid come in all colors, ages and backgrounds. You can never be too careful.author=MirakWhat nationality do you think Ahmed is?

yes you can. this story is exactly a warning on that.
I don't know if that extreme is a good example but ok.
