Eh, it depends on the game, really. There's some great jRPGs story/character wise, and there's some truly terrible wrpgs, story/character wise.

Also, bone of contention, Hexa~
I like when things open up in jRPGs because most of it is completely optional side-stuff. I like options. I have the choice to go beat on the Weapons or just go with the story. I like that. I like choosing to ignore every sidequest I come across at the end of a game and kill the big bad, or go get swole before doing so by collecting all the best of everything. Options. They're GOOD.

To me, there's nothing more boring than having a straight set path with no divergence. Too many games just don't allow for you to go off and check shit out for yourself. All that really matters, I think, is having the choice. You wanna go grind on a bunch of monsters on an island in the middle of nowhere who give triple exp? Go do that. Wanna go confront the guy who was the mastermind of the whole game instead? Go do that. Wanna catch a new chocobo to breed until you get a gold one? Go do that.

Lemme have that choice if I so want. Don't ask for jrpgs to remove my optional content from me. :<

Well, I mean, I feel like there are better ways to do it. Like, In tales of Xillia which I'm just playing right now. You're given some primo controls on getting around. The game very much has a narrow path of what you SHOULD be doing, but it very very rarely keeps you from going anywhere else you've been - and it's awesome in that regard because you can jump from town to town or to any dungeon from any entrance, instantly. If you keep going back, you'll find new skits, and new quests. So, it respects my time. In FFXIII's case, while I really love the game, Pulse was just this huge place with arbitrary obstacles with keys on the opposite sides of the map. It just felt like a cheezy way to pad out the game, by making me take for ever walking from place to place.

That's the difference, really. I'd prefer like: plot quest, side quest, side quest, plot quest, side quest, plot quest, side, side... rather than like plot, plot plot plot, side, plot plot, side side side side.... I want them like mostly evenly distributed?
Honestly I never noticed FF9 battles being slow...? I remember thinking guardian forces in FF8 were a bit over the top, but I guess I just slogged through the slow battles in 9 and didn't really notice.
FF8 allowed you to set the GF animations to short, but because you use them a lot they got overplayed, especially because you had the ability to charge them up so you had to have time for that to occur.

FF9 battles were slow if you go back to them after playing something else.

FF9 battles didn't feel slow for me either, and last i played was 3 months ago.
Casting strong magic in ff8 felt like it took seven times longer, while in 9 the longest animations were relegated to trance status.
I know the GF animations can be shortened. I just remember thinking the original animations were quite long. I've played 9 from start to finish a few different times, and the pacing never bothered me. Must just be a personal thing.

Anyway, those sorts of technical things were never the basis of my gripes with any FF games.

And worse, they weren't at full power unless the full animation played.

Thing is, the animation lengths never bothered me. Not for FFIX, either. I never noticed any lag, and I played all these games on PSOne.

Nothing reveals Humanity so well as the games it plays. A game of betrayal, where the most suspicious person is brutally murdered? How savage.

I have never thought any ATB system was too slow. It's nice to have long animations in which you can plan your next move. Now I haven't played 8 so I don't know how egregious it is, but in earlier FFs I always just went into the spell list to stop the ATB, plan the turn, and then execute it.

Especially FFV was horribly difficult if you didn't act fast enough. If you spend time thinking while the enemy can move, bosses'll get like three hits in on you before you act.

And then you have difficult early bosses like Siren turning undead (difficult if you're like me and take advantage of the Monk's Kick command, counter and high HP to take out the enemies of the Ship Graveyard and forget to change back to Black Mage) or Garula being a downright powerhouse that really demand that you know how to get the most bang for your job selection buck.

Then again, Liquid Flame is also a bother even with Mystic Knights using Blizzara Sword. Really, the game itself is just hard.

I'd really like to go back and play that game again but iOS version is so damned ugly.

I don't remember an option in FF8 to reduce the animation time of summons. Of course, I only ever used the GF command in one playthrough ever, so, I probably shouldn't talk.

Now, I do recall FF9 summons being able to be short or long, and if you get the long animation, it's more powerful. Did Garnet's Eidolon Trance ability allow the longer animations to occur more often? Was it an ability she could equip? I forget. It's been a while.
Maybe I'll be an extra two arms for someone one day; after all.

I'm almost certain it's a guarantee, otherwise her Trance would be completely useless.
I'm sure there was just an option in FF8 to shorten the GF animations in settings...?

It's that funny to you?
I mean I thought the first video was kind of funny ya but I didn't really understand why.

I just got done essentially screaming into a review because of one scene that upset me deeply. I need a breather before I write the next one. It wasn't a bad game (I gave it a 3/5), but if you're going to write human beings, learn how human beings work and respond to traumatic events.

They don't immediately spring back with bouncy Chrono Trigger music just because their best friend showed up.
Has anyone ever been or felt ripped off before?
