Can someone tell me which phone company is better between Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile? My family is getting a new phone contract in a few weeks. I want to go with AT&T or Verizon because they offer the Sony Xperia Play. But the others are thinking of T-Mobile because they heard it has better signal reception than AT&T.

And I want to change my phone number, too. These college representatives keep calling me everyday to advertise their schools. It's so annoying and distracting. :|

If you seem to get better or worse reception than someone else, it's because of your phone, not your phone company.

Where did you get this information? I'm hesitant to believe it because I have worked for AT&T and have dealt with people who have gotten brand new phones and still have bad reception. There are other factors like how many people are using the towers at the same time. And sometimes your phone isn't using the closest tower.

The fact that different companies use the same cell towers I have heard from several sources, but upon looking it up, about half the google results say it's correct. The other half say that it's only common for towers to be shared by one big company and many smaller companies, not usually by more than one of the four big companies. I no longer know.

When I say your bad signal is because of your phone, I don't mean because it's old. I mean because it has a bad antenna. There's basically no correlation at all between how expensive a phone is and how good an antenna it has. iPhones for example have terrible antennas. Exactly how terrible varies between iPhone generations; some are merely "pretty terrible" while others are "fucking terrible". Sometimes, flip phones even have better antennas than smartphones - which sort of makes sense I guess, because talking on the phone is the only thing anyone does on them, so they don't need to shrink the antenna to add more screen space or jumbo battery mass.

I have a MyTouch 4G and it has a decent antenna. In the basement at my office, where I spend most of my week, I can get a 2G internet signal in about 25% of the basement, a phone signal good enough to hear people in about 75% of it, and a phone signal good enough for my phone to ring when someone calls in about 90% of it. Meanwhile, most customers who come in, including some with with the same carrier as me, either lose their entire phone signal or lose the ability to make out what anyone is saying as soon as they step inside.
