the weird thing about hard mode is that cave story's original mechanics are pretty solidly designed around the fact that you will take a few hits now and then -- the weapon experience system, for instance, is there to force quick decision-making when you slip up during a boss fight. for a mode that forces you down to three health, those mechanics effectively no longer exist -- and since most of the game's encounters were originally designed with the assumption that the player can take a couple of hits, the mechanics don't really support a no-hit run and it's down to your reflexes alone.
also, god help anyone who gets the Nemesis on hard mode.

Pretty much what I was thinking. It might be worth it to make a thread to discuss those design choices.

I dunno, that's about all I have to say about Cave Story's hard mode. unless you're talking about a general topic for weird or counterintuitive design choices, which could totes be interesting.
There are a lot of seemingly trivial details that make the game much harder or even unfair and I can't tell if they are intentional. It really makes me wonder what the line is between really hard and unfair. I'm drawing my experience from everything up to the Monster X fight. I can probably come up with a decently sized list.

All the travel to and from Alberta mixed with the sudden lifestyle change is really messing with my subconscious. I've been having super weird dreams lately, most notably dead people lying in bathtubs and someone spilling baby teeth through the mail slot of a steel door. It's both exciting and slightly worrying thinking about what my mind could possibly come up with next.
I was thinking about what gender Mr_Detective's avatar is but now I'm thinking about how hungry I am because of Pizza.
