There's a basement below the hookah bar downtown. It's for storage, but it's set up in the oddest way. All the boxes and knick-knacks are stacked up to the low ceiling, and they are arranged so that the only moving spaces are little square islands, which are connected by narrow channels. Sometimes teenagers party there. They aren't the typical kind of party, however. There are no strobe lights and there is no loud dance music. This is the party of the damned. Drugs and booze. It's an underground cult. One island holds a group playing spin-the-bottle. Their eyes are bloodshot, their minds numb. The centermost holds the host, who sits at a card table idly playing solitaire, just waiting for someone to smoke a bowl with him. He is in charge of the music, the stereo that is attached to speakers on all four corners of the room. Another island is where rumors breed. Ten seventeen-year-olds wrapped in fur blankets in the pitch black, whispering things they want to be true to one another. He said, she said. Not one of them knows another. They spread their rumors relentlessly, until they're strong enough to become reality. Other islands of varying degrees of illicitness speckle the basement. And in the back, in the farthest island from the stairs, there is a girl half-conscious on a soiled couch. Before her are two red plastic cups filled with absinthe. She smiles and beckons you to drink.

Present day. Present time. Bwahshahahaha!

Even good anime like Cowboy Bebop and Big O I can't get into. Haven't seen Gurren Lagan yet, though, so maybe that'll change me.
