WHAT ARE YOU THINKING ABOUT RIGHT NOW?

Posts

Everyone has their bad days no matter where they live. Denying them the right to be upset over something that affects them is bullshit and just plain assholery. If a white girl is crying because she can't go to prom with the girl of her dreams, that doesn't make her sorrow any less than that of a man and woman in a less developed country who can't be together because they're promised to other people. FFS. :/

Sorry, sore point. Besides, the so-called Third World is very different to what they show on TV. For one, a majority of people have iPhones - they need them to work. We seem to think of them as backward and less technologically advanced that the First World. Not quite true.

Granted, there are those who are worse off, but then there are those worse off in our own streets, so...

Saw the new Fallout 4 trailer. I quite liked what I saw. People are already complaining about the graphics - go figure. People are too invested in graphics over gameplay. I don't want to see the beads of sweat on my characters' chin. I just want a game where I can tell what is what and that plays well with a lot of cool content and interesting story.

I'm not going to pretend I'm an expert, but having lived in countries like Pakistan and Saudi Arabia for a large portion of my life, I'm fairly aware of discrepancies/non-discrepancies between the First and 'Third' Worlds. In Pakistan, most people definitely do not have iPhones, and it's hardly the poorest country around either.

Also, I can't say much, but my company does a decent amount of work with charities, and one of the recent projects we were involved with included SMS-based school quizzes for African countries, because people couldn't afford basic internet plans. They've only recently made Android apps because smartphone market share for a certain country SKYROCKETED to, like, 5% in the past year.

I'm not sure what kind of 'Third World' countries you're talking about...Canada?

Depends on what TV you watch. I've seen some pretty miserable conditions by watching documentaries on KERA World. I've seen a (what we would call) backwater farming village get displaced because the elder couldn't pay enough to keep some other entity (whether it was a big business or militant group, I can't recall) from wiping the whole place out.

On the other hand, a guy in Africa took chunks of discarded computers out of a landfill and used them to make a 3D printer.

my favourite is when people use examples of discrimination in foreign countries to try and get activists in the first world to shut up. like telling feminists that they shouldn't talk about media representation when women in other countries are being stoned, since it's apparently impossible to care about multiple problems at once.

I wouldn't say that. I don't know how much of the 3rd World you've seen (and I don't mean to be patronizing), but a good chunk of it is pretty fucking shitty. Most people have no idea of the privileges they enjoy in first world, mostly Western societies, and there's a reason why people fall over themselves to get there.

I don't mean that in a disparaging way, but I'm just saying how it is; the difference in quality in life in almost every measurable way between the Third World (which is still massive chunks of the world) and the First World is immense. Even if some of them do have iPhones (which they don't), many still have to worry about things as simple as clean water.

Indeed...with reference to my older post: Back in Pakistan, most were lucky to get cleaning/janitorial work, and here I am picking between pretty damn lucrative office-based jobs which I mainly have access to due to free, high-quality schooling and a functional student loan system - stuff most Pakistanis could only dream of. I think I know how hard my life is compared to others 'back home'.

Imagine if iPhones had actually taken over that much of the world. Steve Jobs giving the old British Empire a run for its money. The Commonwealth of Apple Fanatics

That reminds me. In "I Was Worth 50 Sheep", the family lives out of a cement/stone house and the father had to paint the walls himself with this big broom-like brush that he just sort of slapped on the wall. It got the job done but extremely inefficiently. They sat on the floor on small rugs with the only thing keeping the outside world out being a brick wall with an iron door on one side along the exterior of the property.

you know what i noticed. programmers are rarely 'i am a senior programmer/developer at prestigious company x'. more like 'yeah im a yuppie piece of shit, so what'. less white->more guilt, due to expanded perspective

my opinion is that broadcasting self awareness is the process by which you slowly become the former group. if you feel a conflict within yourself then take action until you dont

I'm too non-white to understand this post. Is it ever possible to be in a zero-conflict situation? I'm pretty sure I'd have regretted the decision I just had to make either way.
not your job offer im just fucking around with you re: that

im saying it seems youre not 100% comfortable with your position in relation to the rest of the world and that its something ive also noticed in people in similar situations (entry in last ~4 yrs, ~100k paychecks, work surprisingly easy)

its what you dreamed of. having opinions on the internet professionally
like, that's a joke and all but that's actually an industry these days so

*publishes ten-part series about why actually Bioshock Infinite is the best game ever made and critics just want to make gamers sad for nefarious reasons*
also did you know that super mario 64 is about death????????

It's nothing to feel bad about though either. There's nothing inherently wrong or guilty about earning and living comfortably.
use yr wealth and influence to the benefit of people with neither and you're good imo

(that isn't going to segue into another silly 'give me money' comment, I'm serious that as long as you avoid exploitative practices + use your means to help others where possible you're basically okay)

(but also eat the rich imo)
