I went ham on GBA Mario Party trying to get all the unlockables back in middle school. I didn't succeed.

I agree with Pizza, I've never played a bad Mario game.

I have. Several. Mario is Missing for the SNES stands out.

Playing through Legend of Mana i noticed a few artifacts that might shed a light on the process behind the backgrounds. I'm fairly sure that those white jaggies / borders are leftovers of white space from the paper! Or if it is really digital art, just hushed erasing, though I find that unlikely. From this evidence I'm fairly sure the backgrounds were drawn traditionally and layered, each layer (foreground, background etc) on its separate drawing. Hmmmm... I'll look for more evidence.

EDIT: HOLY MOLY EGO

It's a dream of mine to someday make a game that looks like Legend of Mana, with the unique hand-drawn/painted look to each screen/area. I was totally impressed with how Resonate ~call out my angel~ did that :DDDDD

Is it bad that im hooked on stuff from Japan that came out when I was 10 years old?

I think this just means you're on RMN.

There probably aren't as many real Mario platformer games as there are real Zelda adventure games. But I guess the RPGs and the Luigi's Mansion games should also count as "real."
This is just off the top of my head:
Super Mario Bros
Super Mario Bros 2 (does this one count?)
Super Mario Bros "Lost Levels"
Super Mario Bros 3
Super Mario Land
Super Mario Land 2
Super Mario World
Super Mario 64
Super Mario Sunshine
Super Mario Galaxy
Super Mario Galaxy 2
New Super Mario Bros
New Super Mario Bros 2
New Super Mario Bros Wii
New Super Mario Bros U
Super Mario 3D Land
Super Mario 3D World

E:
Super Mario Maker (?)
Now, now, let's tone down the hate on Mario is Missing. While I certainly wouldn't call it a "Mario game", it's an alright game. I have fond memories of it. The prospect of traveling around the world was a very neat one for me back then. That's one of the reasons why I got into Terranigma as well, and rpgs in general... Feel free to rag on Mario's Time Machine, though. =P
There must be at least a hundred Mario games by now. When are they gonna run out of names and finally make "Marios bedside adventures".

While I don't respect Nintendo as a modern company, I'm totally fine with accessible games so I guess I get it. I think I just would rather have more mascot adventures/platformers than another Mario game because Mario as a character is so bland to me

i do have a lot of respect for shigeru miyamoto's early mario games, though. this is probably just me being a curmudgeon because how could anything post-super mario 64 be any good!??!?!?!? (actually i personally don't like sm64 even though i really want to, but i still appreciate it as a Very Good Game)

edit: it's hour 4.5/6.5 of the school day and i'm finally getting one of my main students to do some work
Sticker Star Saga and Partners in Time are bad Mario games. If I had to go for a platformer I'd probably roll with Sunshine.

You are being a curmudgeon. The only bad/average games in that lot I posed was Lost Levels and Sunshine (sorry GRS).

I'll say it again, but Super Mario 3D World is an absolute blast. Honestly, the Wii U has been my favorite console since the SNES (in terms of quality and fun games, and that's what matters with consoles, right?)
Nah, I meant if I had to go for a platformer as a bad Mario game I'd probably pick Sunshine. LL would probably be my second pick, too many jerk moves for no adequate reason besides 'nintendo hard' shit. Sunshine itself was just... boring? Can't say I cared much about the Fludd mechanics, the level design was annoying, and fuck what Nintendo did with blue coins forever. I haven't played it for forever though.

If I had to pick a favorite Mario platformer it'd probably be the one with the most annoying Mario, SMW2: Yoshi's Island. 4P New Mario is fucking fantastic though.
However I'll always have a special place in my heart for Mario 64, shitty camera and everything, for being the first open world level real 3d game I ever played and it fucking blew my mind at the time. I was disappointed in Zelda OoT that you couldn't move like Mario.
I thought Yoshi's Island was a 'Yoshi' game and not really a Mario game. It's an amazing game though - on of my faves.
That's a fair classification. I never played any of the other Yoshi games so I'm not sure how YI compares to them so it's always been a Mario game in my head, even if Mario only cries and occasionally becomes a super baby in YI.
Sticker Star and Partners in Time were super bad! Paper Jam looks terrible! Dream Team was okay, but bland! Bowser's Inside Story was surprisingly good, even though I didn't really like Fawful?

Yoshi's Island is superfantastich, though, and Wooly World is honestly a really good successor to it? it sticks pretty close to the formula so it isn't going to bowl you over with amazing new revelations or anything, but it's got exploring and puzzles and stuff

it doesn't have this song though and that's a damn shame

I'll give you that. But considering the sheer amount of Mario games that exist, that's an exception upon exceptions. You could definitely make a case for oversaturation of Mario, but with the average quality they have, I can see why Nintendo does it.
mario is treated very carefully by Nintendo tbh

I'm just remembering now that in the 3DS mario golf, you can walk around the clubhouse and talk to characters, but mario isn't given any dialogue of his own -- he just plays a talking animation and a nearby character tells you what he's saying. it's super jarring tbh? like they were so worried about mischaracterizing him that they skipped over the problem completely
