THE RPG MUSIC CHALLENGE - PHASE 2 RESULTS

Posts

This is harder than I expected, I had to replay these songs many times till I have my choice.

Entry 6: Even the melody keeps repeating, I like the way it is composed.
Entry 8: A calm and sad nostalgic music.
Entry 9: Music of a quite sad memory.
Entry 10: Very nice orchestration, it feels like adventurous fantasy movie theme like Lord of the Rings.
Entry 21: It sounds like a happy ending of an RPG.

And my vote goes to: Entry 13
The piece is so warm and calm, gives flashback of a person's childhood until the day he is now. I really like this one.
My vote goes to: 10

It was a clear winner for me. Besides being super high quality, it sounded like a memory of past love. Kind of like nostalgia XD Lots of different instruments used, and kept evolving it went along. Nice melody too!

I wish we could pick runner ups though! There are a lot of pieces that tied for second place IMHO. Those include: 8,13,15,16,23. Great job everyone!

(Socrates would certainly not contadict me!)

My vote goes to : 19 : really sensitive moments, quite beautiful

I hesitated a while between this one and 10, really nice too; finally, I really liked 24, was it orchestral though?
My Vote: Entry 16: Very beautiful piece, reminiscent of Wild Arms.

It took quite a while to narrow it down, but I think this fit the nostalgic theme the best, very closely followed by entries 6 and 8.

On a side note, I really enjoyed Entry 20, even though it didn't fit the theme in any way, shape, or form.
I can't decide so I'll just have to pick one of the good ones....Entry 13

*bites tongue for those mentioning my piece*
21 takes the cake for me, reminds me of the band waking ashland which is pretty much an automatic win for me.

Honorable mention to 2, 10 and 15.
There is currently a 4-way tie in votes right now!! :o (5-way tie if Clyve's post counts as a vote)

That's amazing. I could easily see the majority of these tracks in a commercial game.

bad dude rad dude herodude
I vote for Entry 10 - I think it really hits the mark for being both nostalgic and orchestrated! I love how it opens softly and then gets so sweepingly epic later - I can totally picture this song telling a story.

#15 is my runner-up choice! It's beautiful *_*
1 - 80 Fits
2 - 74 Kinda fits
3 - 75 Kinda Fits
4 - 85 Fits
5 - 80 Fits, but has some off- notes
6 - 88 Fits decently, gets repetitious
7 - 84 Kinda fits, Nice tune overall
*8 - 89 Fits greatly, VERY nice tune overall, however at some points it deviates
9 - 85 Fits
10 - 88 Kinda fits, It is a very excellent piece of music, but I feel it's not fully grasping the flashback theme
11 - 84 Kinda fits, It's almost a suspenseful flashback
12 - 65 Doesn't fit, I feel this goes all over the place in various parts of the tune.
*13 - 89 Fits greatly, at times though it does feel like I am in a town, maybe a flashback of a town
14 - 55 Not fitting. It's just very out of place.
*15 - 89 fits greatly, I would have given this a greater score if the beat would have not kicked in, but even so, I love the feeling of it. Good composition.
16 - 85 Fits, it's missing the magic, but it's overall good solid piece.
17 - 79 Almost fits, As someone mentioned it's not defined well, I feel it had potential to become a greater piece
18 - 88 Fits greatly, I loved the basis of it, but the prolonged use of the wind and that wah-ing guitar just distracted me from the flashback i was having. Very good piece overall though.
19 - 84 Fits
20 - 50 Not fitting, More out of place than 14.
21 - 80 Fits,I feel it just fits the theme. It's a good tune, but the fact that it could go along as a happy ending, or a town theme lowered the flashback experience for me.
22 - 75 Kinda fits, but this a nice piece overall. Almost felt like subtle overworld theme to me.
23 - 86 fits, the feeling of a flashback is almost there, it feels as if I am trying to remember something, but it does bring memories, so it goes in hand with that.
24 - 82 fits well, however the sound quality obviously demerits you, and I would've liked to hear a piano or a sting to complete the formula. Overall though, it's a very nice tune.

Tie- Breakah!

8 - 90
13 - 92
15 - 95 I really don't like that beat at the end, however, before that, I was in a flashback of my own.

My Vote: 15

My Vote: 10
Which simply seemed to fit the theme of orchestral and nostalgia.
I also ended up liking entry #18
if only we had some sort of voting mechanism built into the site for this...

my vote: 8
My vote Entry 15

Fits the theme so well.
My vote is Entry 6
Really like it as a song. Would be good in a game.

So the same as last time for me. I'm writing comments as I listen to the tracks. Some might be brief some might not and some might be about another track completely. Let's see how it goes.

Song #1
Well it gets the nostalgia down at least. It's kinda like the opening of Mega Man 2. Except so far it hasn't gone past that opening thing.
It certainly becomes more epic here at the end.

Song #2
This is from a musical isn't it? Man if it only wasn't a midi we'd get some woman singing about love and flowers and shit. Hahaha awesome the second verse is higher. Of course it is! Man if only this was a proper song. I just want to hear it the way it's... you know. Supposed to sound!
Though really I just want to know what the lyrics are.

Song #3
Well at least this starts out a bit worse so that's comforting. Typical slow castle fare. Some flashbacktalking about better times and birds flying outside. Not really much to it. At least not compared to the previous two. I really hope not everything is going to be awesome.

Song #4
Starts out regular. It seems I'm only commenting on very first impressions here. Another village. With lots of green. Why's nostalgia always so... villagey and green? No one ever starts out in the big city or in the desert or something. No that's always grimy and stuff. Overall the melody thingie is pretty good. But the arrangement leaves me wanting. I suppose this would be better if it wasn't "orchestrated".

Song #5
Castles. I guess though it's really the midi sound that is all castles. You can't really go for murder on the dancefloor with this.
Hmm this really goes somewhere by the end. The melody thing has a kind of... trad. feel.

Song #6
Pianoing it up but there's not much to this otherwise. The melody isn't great and it doesn't really "transport" me anywhere. Not yet anyway.
Two minutes in there's the middle part which is almost interesting. But no. Then nothing. Now it apparently ends minimalistic to try to get that transported feel but really, I'm not feeling it. The background is kinda shrill and thinges.

Song #7
One minute in and I haven't said a thing yet! There's something about this that is so nondescript and regular. I suppose that is a danger with orchestral pieces for RPGs they tend to all sound the same. And I'm only at #7 yet and I'm almost bored!
How can this be? Fortunately I've got some potato chips. nomnomnomnom.
Well it epics up here in the end, not enough to save it though. Epic's not everything.

Song #8
Pianoing it up again.
Uhm. Again not much happening. Though I guess it doesn't have to. I guess I am kinda elsewhere. Some of this reminds me of Titanic for some reason. Some skies, some sundowns a bit of water all over the place. Okay now it epiced up and it really messed up the mood. I don't know why that was there at all. DUMM DUMM DUMM. Who thought that was a good idea?

Song #9
Archipelago music. Water against them rocks. Doesn't really stand out, especially in the bunch we've had so far.
A log building. Maybe a sauna.

Song #10
I remember listening to this one before and being completely blown away by it. So let's see if it does the same now that I've done a lot of...

Yeah it does.
Fuck.
This is very much a movie piece though. With strictly directed action happening all over. I also get a slight Neverland vibe from it. Fog, pirates, flying kids, all that stuff you know.
Now there's knights and shit. I almost would have liked to hear a longer version of this.

Song #11
Oh well! This starts out promising! One minute in I'm waiting for it to start.
This could be good!
It could be awesome!
Bring out the heavy metal!
Any minute now.
Oh it's over.

Song #12
In chat they say elephants. I don't know. I see more... butterflies or those small birds in Snow White or Cinderella. Plingplongplingplong.

Song #13
Well this starts out like a flashback. "Let me tell you a story. It was early spring, the snow had just melted and then..." I wouldn't mind a bit of an orc invasion or something but it doesn't seem this is that kind of story. This is more stories of how awesome things once were.
I guess this really does make me kinda... nostalgic. It reminds me so much of some other famous track at it just goes there completely.

Song #14
What is this.
It's very loud compared to everything else. I don't know what to say about it. It is interesting but I don't know what to say apart from that. At least it's kinda different and has a bit more energy to it. It might be a bit short. I just ended and I kinda wanted to know where it'd go.

Song #15
Uhm.
Another one of those non-descript ones. And just as I say that it gets that flute or something thing going and gets kinda interesting.
Ooooh
what is this end part.
Holy shit.
I want more of this and less of whatever was there in the beginning! Yeah baby.

Song #16
Inn music mayhaps. Inn music don't go well with orchestras though. Fortunately it is in the background. Still it's pretty standard village stuff again.

Song #17
Starts out nice. If it was a different instrument making these sounds it could've been pretty cool. But let's see how it ends up. My ears are getting tired soon. Maybe I should listen to some real music before I tackle the last couple of songs.
Yeah I don't know. I don't really like this very much. It kinda hurts my ears, too high maybe.

Song #18
Mirror's Edge? This starts out airy and nice. And now we're in SPACE. FUCK YEAH SPACE. That's really what's been missing. So many villages and green places and castles when all we really need is to be floating in space!

Song #19
This starts out like a military nostalgic look. You know hero graves and whatnot. It continues with this slightly depressing thing. Which is nice. Gotta love some depressing nostalgic flashbacks too. Not everything can be all chocolate and pedophiles.

Song #20
Oh yeah this one. I had already given this one a listen from before. It's really quite horrible. It starts out okay but really messes it all up after about thirty seconds or so.
Baby's first synth.

Song #21
What is this? Elton John? Well now it got somewhere at the minute mark. This is like ending music. Fitting since it's close to end of these listenings. When you go through everything you've done this is what plays in the background. And medals are handed out and you high-five your buddies, except that one guy that sacrificed himself for the greater good and you shed a bit of a tear for that guy.
I guess I like it.
Or it's just really good compared to #20

Song #22
Well a little more energy this time. Always a good time since I'm about to fall asleep. I don't know if I'm transported anywhere yet though. But maybe. Something like following the POV of a bird flying through a bustling town or manor. Seeing kids running around and playing, climbing the walls and generally being adventurous. Obviously these are our protagonists when they were younger. And obviously something bad's about to happen.

Just not yet.

Song #23
Star Wars lullaby!
Oh wait what. Now it's at least night and starry skies and stuff. Maybe a ghost or two floating above doing whatever it is ghosts do these days. Sneaking out of bed in the full moon. Trying to catch a glimpse of the werewolf. But really it's just the glowing flies and whatnot. And it's summer so it's warm as well there in the bluish light. Maybe with a close friend.
Village again I suppose. Possibly town. The scent of adventure. But not too dangerous. I guess in nostalgia land there's always adventure but it's not quite as dangerous as it is in present day.

Song #24
wtf. This is how it all ends eh.

I guess my vote just has to go to Entry 10, because it really just is that godsdamn awesome. It has the orchestra thing properly going for it, while a lot of other just do piano and some of those other instruments. This one really feels heavy and large. And on the whole very nostalgic.

For some reason I really liked the ones past 20. 21-23 all evoked some pretty specific images in my mind. Maybe I just knew I was at the end stretch and knew it'd all be over soon. The two first midi ones are really quite good too.

There's a lot of samey stuff too though. I guess nostalgia tends to sound the same to a lot of people. Always with the villages and green grass...
Shinan, please do these reviews in exactly the same format next phase. It's really entertaining and fresh to see stream of conscious reviews.
My Vote: Entry 13
Vote: #10

My runner up would be #6. It's got a really nice theme but the orchestration in 10 is superb. I had a tough time deciding between these two and I think both would work very well in a game, though for different purposes. For some reason 6 feels like a character theme or other bgm, and 10 is definitely event music.
