IDRAW AND OTHER SPRITING QUESTIONS

Which program is best to use for spriting? I've heard IDraw recommended numerous times, but when I try to change colors (the default seems to be white), I get an error:
IDraw Ver3.32.3
Exception EAccessViolation in module IDraw3.exe at 0006985B.
????? 'IDraw3.exe' ????? 0046985B ????? 00000024 ??????????????????.
I don't expect anyone to know what that means or know how to remedy the problem, really. I've tried reinstalling it, but it never seems to work, and I always get the same error.
What other tools are good?
Why are these tools better than something like Paint?
If I am pulling tile sets and character sets off of threads here and elsewhere, what do I do with them? Do I copy them into IDraw/whatever program gets recommended and save them?
Or - the more direct question that I should have asked first is, is there a comprehensive guide or tutorial on how to begin spriting? I'm not too worried about technique(s) right now. I'd just like to start experimenting.
Thanks!

You know what? I jumped the gun here. I found a guide on the site. Just had to look around a little more.
I get a similar error in iDraw when I try to copy something into my image from another source. I can paste that something into Ifranview, then copy it from Ifranview and paste it into iDraw as a work around.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.

I did a bit of editing with VX/A sprites last night. Instead of using Photoshop I decreased to 256 colours and broke out the iDraw. It's just one of the best programs for spriting and recolouring (providing you know how to use it effectively.) I love how you can select one colour so quickly. And right mouse click for colour change? Brilliant! <3
I ended up downloading Character Maker 1999 and Paint.net. I'll give those two a try. Hopefully, they'll be everything that I need to get things done.
LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

Idraw will give you errors like that if you try to open images with more than 256 colors, or images with semitransparent parts.
Oh, I open the program to a new page/canvas/whatever you want to call it, and I try to adjust the RGB sliders. That's when I get the error. I haven't even attempted to paste anything in or open up an existing file.
Graphics Gale I think is the best for spriting, but that's just me.
Anyway: from rm2k3, standard tiles are 16x16. RMXP and higher it's 32.
