Hi y'all I wanted to ask if anyone knows a nice game engine in which you could make side-scrolling RPG's (not something like Super Mario, or a jumper).I was hoping for something like the 90's game Alien.

I want to create a game where the player could climb ladders, talk to NPC's, sleep, eat... I think it can be done, since its 2D? (hoping for it)

Thanks in advance!
Probably gamemaker?

I've wanted something like this for a while, too, but never really did anything about it.
...I would recommend you also game maker, but also you can start learning programation like me and create it on java :P

Thanks for the reply, but gamemaker does not work for me, its kinda too complicated...
I may just have got used to VX, i dunno...
Well, it wouldn't hurt to explain it now, would it?

I was thinking about making a post-apocalyptic game where you wake up in a shelter, know nothing and head out in the world(a large desert-like harsh world)You head to the right of the screen and occassionaly fight zombie-like people, bandits and other factions. You loot the cabinets, crates etc. You talk to NPC's, which can give you useful info or just quests. You need to eat, drink and sleep, and you can only save the game if you are in a shelter etc.
I would add much more options to the game, if a game maker existed.
This is possible in all the RPG Makers, Game Maker is a completely different platform compared to RPG Maker, so it is differently customed. I personally recommend RPG Maker 2003, it's not hard to get used to, it has a free and better tile set system compared to VX and it's rather easy to convert to a 2d format. Not to mention you don't need an excessive amount of programming needed compared to XP / VX.
