I'm going to document my Trek into Star Trek Online. You can play too, here!
Anywho, I'll start by saying I'm not the hugest Star Trek fan. I've watched the movie where they save a whale countless times, some of the newer movies, a few episodes of TNG, a few episodes of DS9, and some Voyager.
That being said, I still LIKE Star Trek, so I'm going to give this game a fair try.
To start you pick between Tactical, Engineering and Science Officers. These define your abilities in battle. Each has their own perk, and we'll get to that later. I believe I picked Tactical Officer.
Now we get to create our character... You can pick from a long list of Star Trek races, or make your own! Well, I couldn't resist... Here's my guy:
Following this, a cinematic back history that, I think follows the story of the latest movie. The one where the Romulan sun blows up? I think that's what happened. Wasn't paying attention.
Anyway, the story begins with Dudes of Toronto plopped into what I guess is an engine room or something.
More to come in episode 2 of Let's Play Star Trek Online!
ENGAGE!

ENGAGE!
So, like I said, I wasn't paying attention to why I was in this room. Some people told me to head to the bridge because they needed my help. What was the big hurry? Why was everyone freaking out? Why the red alert going on? What's the big---oh.

Apparently, I needed to hail another ship that was in distress. They were, as I said, in distress. So why not send good ol' Dudes to save the other ship? A one-man Away team.

The other ship was a wreak! Bodies everywhere, and the ship wasn't in fine shape either. There was a hologram doctor telling me to scan one of the patients... It didn't go well.

Damn it, hologram, I'm a Tactical Officer, not a doctor!
So, they send me off to take care of the Borg threat. Well, first thing is first. Teleport them into a vaccuum. Gameplay is fairly simple at this point. You run around like any other MMO, and interact with one button.

After heading to the next zone, I was introduced to fighting. Using your phaser is a lot like using skills in City of Heroes or WoW. It's simple, and the range is incredible! I was surprised I could blow up Borg from across the room. The future is friendly.
Speaking of friendly, I found a party member for my Away Team! You get to customise them as you please (some customisations cost money).

So that was fun and all, but same ol' MMO RPG feel and look.
Aha, then we jump straight into space!

Introducing the U.S.S. RMN! Our small ship is packed full of torpedos and whatnot star trek babble.
To learn the controls, they have you beaming folks off other star ships. The learning curve is slight. Basically you control pitch with A, and D. Up and Down with W and S. To move forward you adjust your throttle.
Weapons are the same as fighting on foot, except the range is different, and you're often moving so your shields don't take too much.
That's another thing. Shields: You see a ship icon on the bottom with arrows in the four directions. You can click on any one to divert power to any shield, or click the ship icon to spread shields evenly. Pretty cool!

Hey, that looks familiar...
So, right after this you start warping around to blow up Borg ships. This was cool because it was my first taste of Multiplayer. Other players ships were zooming around trying to take down Borg cubes. It was a lot of fun, and of all things not to screen cap, that was one of them...
So here's a close up of our ship!

Combat in this game is simple enough, in and out of space. I really dig the fact you can fly your ship in this. I've heard it that in Star Wars Old Republic you just get a cut scene. What's that all about?
So, I warp back to Sol, and return to Earth's space station. After clicking through some guy yammer on about how good I did, my first stop is to do what MMO RPGs are made for.

More Captain's logs later...

I played the beta when it first came out and found the space battles way too tedious/difficult. I've heard that they have really improved that part of the game though, so I will probably give it another try.
