FAVORITE RPG STORY AND WHY?
Posts
ugh this is sort of hard because all RPG stories are bad. I want to say planescape torment but that game just had a shitton of lore and emphasis on choices and original setting more than anything.
think ill just stick with Mother 3 since that one felt like it was written by a human.

I love RPG stories; I think they're great. My favorite one is probably Tactics Ogre, especially the PSP remake. Xenogears is a close second, but TO wins out because of its fullness, completeness, and its themes. FFXII had the same potential, but due to a number of developmental setbacks, it couldn't quite hit it.
^ Yup, Xenogears it's fantastic and is my personal favourite, too bad the incredible story is just too crippled by billion idiotic things.
It's the kind of game where I wish the authors hadn't tried doing seventeen different things at the same time and focused more on the main concepts.

Devil Survivor's was pretty good, lots of mystery at the beginning + modern setting + demons/magics = love!
I actually don't even remember most RPG stories. :X

The story is pretty good. The characters (the teenage ones, specifically; the adults are better... but you see the teens 80+% of the time) are abysmal.
And now the sequel is BOOBS: THE GAME (BOOBS 2) (REVENGE OF THE YUZU) -BOOBS<boobies>- .

Yeah, not a fan of those huge, helium filled, freedom seeking balloons.
Still looking forward to the sequel though.
I think the big boobs are great.
I guess I'll say something on topic... Final Fantasy Tactics. It is a story that involves human dynamics (political schism involving both nobles and clergy) and a bit of subtlety. I don't much go for super high-energy epics, though I know most people do.

Final fantasy tactics because I love the seriousness of the story.
Terranigma because its a mind fuck.

author=DarkenWell, that's just the thing, isn't it? It's the interactivity that sets stories in RPGs apart from, say, Shawshank Redemption or Of Mice And Men.

To discard Planescape Torment's story because you got to choose how the story progressed is kind of defeating the point.
you just talked about how a game's story should be consumed along with the game... HMMM where have we had this talk before (because i find this slightly ironic coming from you). idk i just assumed from this topic that if the RPG in question had its game elements stripped away which one had good writing? (that is what the original post said...). like i myself believe that games shouldn't be cut up into segments and analyzed individually but eh, i thought it was interesting to think about in terms of how well RPG stories hold up.
im discarding planescape torment because it didn't have good characters or a strong enough plot. people just rag on it because it had a lot of lore like ..everywhere... its probably one of the better written games out there anyway, but it's not saying much. that said it's still like a GOOD game.
edit: like i cant really say for sure if interactions are fully to blame for average story telling in games. its def pretty fucking hard to write a story knowing there are 200 meaningless conflicts in an ice cavern. then again i cant say people tried either.

60% of game content in Dragon Age and Mass Effect is spent in dialogue and dialogue options. I'd say someone's tried.
I never really thought into all that much. My position was always 'Who cares'? I enjoy them regardless.
I personally think that the world, characters, struggles and overarching themes of parenting/finding new family/coming to terms with the sudden loss of the old family found in FFXIII are highly superior to everything found in FFVI.
Yeah, I just went there.

You know, I kinda have to agree. I love FFVI like I love my firstborn (lol what am I saying I don't even have kids), and I feel like the characters are ridic awesome, but, like... there's just not enough detail. FFVI spreads itself really thin, and while it teases you with characters that go through a lot and are awesome, you never actually get to see them honestly struggle and grow. You get, like... a second of it in their subplots, WHICH IS NOT ENOUGH. >BT
FFXIII works here because they actually did go into detail, and they only focused on six characters rather than fourteen or whatever it was in VI. You got to see the gradual change, and MAAAAAN that was really nice and gave me a character development boner. <3
Honestly, I don't get why everyone rags on XIII's cast so much. The plot was kind of boring, but the cast was excellent. YEAH EVEN VANILLE WHATEVAAAAAH
What I also found interesting in FFXIII was the fact that you are not the heroes. You are the enemies.
"Tell me, do you really think your life is worth more than the lives of millions of Cocoon citizens?" That's it, the Psicoms are protecting millions of people, not you. You are a selfish bastard for wanting to survive lol
Another thing I definitely appreciate is that everybody is not suddenly BFF with each other, they have disagreements and they pick different routes according to their beliefs/motivations.
Still, near the end, when they go all "believe-in-yourself POWER ACTIVATE" it's when it start feeling too much like an actual FF.
Ahaha I get this sensation with art as well sometimes, when coming closer to famous sculptures they look ugly, when seen from distance, they're awesome again XD

I love FFVI (...) but, like... there's just not enough detail. This is how I feel about FFVI as well. Looking at the game in it's entirety it's great, lots to do, lots to see, but zooming in and looking at the details, you see it's kinda rushed.

I felt like FFXIII's character dev scenes where divided into:
A) several short scenes that present the same thin aspect over and over again. The worst being Hope's scenes in the first half of the game.
B) a very limited number of scenes where the char dev moves forward really fast, too much to be taken seriously IMO. The worst one that comes to mind is Lightning's "I've been a blind pet" scene.
Overall I felt that the story was good while the screenplay and narrative were bad.
These don't lower the story's quality but they definitely hindered my appreciation of it.

My favorite RPG would probably be Chrono Cross. People usually criticize me for saying that but truth be told I have never really sat down to play Chrono Trigger (recenlty bought it though so I will be playing it soon)
Anyways, I love the fact that you bounce in between worlds. The battle system is pretty unique in my opinion, I have yet to play a game with a similar battle system (not talking about turn based) It was also the first time I played a game with a character using a Swallow (Staff with blades on both sides) i thought that was pretty awesome.
I don't want to go into detail of why it tops the other rpgs i like because i hate giving away spoilers. Who knows, maybe there is one of you who has yet to play it.

I haven't played it but know the general details of the plot anyway, spoilers and all.
Avee, in reading your comments it's clear to see your views on different aspects and why; many of us aren't always so clear. When one speaks of a "good story" he may mean it's well-written, while another focuses on how it made him feel, making it hard to come to common consensus.
