I know that jobs aren't very stable with the economy and all

Don't believe everything NPR tells you man. There is nothing wrong with the economy; it's just settling back down to where it belongs. We've enjoyed 20 years or so of ridiculous economic bubbles that have been bursting one by one (especially the inflated housing market fucking hell real estate is not supposed to give a 300% return in your investment in a single decade no kidding the market collapsed eventually). Also most economic problems in America right now are the fault of individuals borrowing more than they can afford to pay back (predatory lending or not people need to stop being dumbasses) and not that they don't make enough money or that expenses are too high. It's ridiculous that the media has convinced everyone that they are going to be laid off and that by the end of June everyone in America will be standing in line at soup kitchens. Seriously man don't worry life will be fine.

Otherwise I can't really contribute to your topic but I thought I'd just mention that.

There are some verious serious issues undermining our economy right now, Mr. Abley, so I think it is terrible that you are trying to pretend everything is rainbows and butterflies or are at least downplaying the reality. The housing market and the .com bubbles did burst, and rightfully so, but the there are still significant problems in the economy. The fact that Americans are borrowing more than they can afford is a result of the poor economy, not the cause of it (thought it does then create a snowball effect).

The U.S. is losing a lot of jobs. We lost over 100,000 last month, the fifth huge monthly drop in a row. Over 600,000 people who used to be full-time workers now work part-time due to hour cuts or not being able to find full-time work. The unemployment rate right now is at 5% and growing fast. The median salary for Americans last year decreased by 0.5 percent adjusted for inflation (it actually had a much larger decrease among blue collar workers - executive pay continues to skyrocket). Some fields may appear to be recession proof right now, such as IT, law, energy, etc, but even then their money is worth far less because the cost of gasoline is up 35%, food prices rose 5% and medical services rose 9%.

The skyrocketing price of a barrel of oil is raising prices in many other products, such as shampoos, soaps, plastics, etc, that are at least in part derived from oil. This is even before considering the higher cost of fuel to transport them.

My company just terminated its Senior Vice President of Stores, Vice President of Marketing, and two Senior buyers due to a slowdown in the retail environment. I suppose you will now say the toilet paper market has been inflated and is coming back to where it should be. Retailers across the board are reporting only small comp sales increases, or, more likely, decreases.

Lets not forget our entire automobile industry is in shambles due to poor planning, not being competitive in foreign markets and refusing to innovate. The entire state of Michigan has been facing near bankruptcy for years because of this.

It's not pretty out there, even if it's not be affecting a college student who eats Ramen in the burbs of Minneapolis.

Also, if you are into uranium, Saskatchewan produces about 1/3 of the world's supply.

Brutal Rebuttal

You've got me dude. Still, I really do maintain that the economy is not nearly as bad as the media (especially NPR) is claiming. Americans have been maintaining an unsustainable and unreasonable standard of living as well as level of consumption, and the middle class does not deserve to live like royalty. This is contemporary to the mindset that has gotten the country into the state that it's in right now. I don't know maybe you can call me a radical liberal. We could have a long diatribe -- maybe that we differently view the way a society should function and maybe you think I should move somewhere with a higher tax rate -- but we have a politics thread for that (maybe we should have an economy thread too!).

We could have a long diatribe about maybe that we view the way a society should function differently but we have a politics thread for that (maybe we should have a social engineering or economy thread too!). But at the end of the day I really do believe that everything will alright in America. Do you disagree with that, Holb?

I could go in to a long diatribe about this, but I will just answer your last question. America will persevere, and, if these politicians keep screwing stuff up, I will just fix it all when I am elected in 2032.
