HEY READ THIS ABOUT FF6.

Yeah, I was like that in my first play trough (10+ years ago) and I though it was awesome; spamming Ultima and whatnot. But in sub-sequential plays I pay better attention to my stats and equipment, and tend avoid magic for the most part, specially in the end game. Powerful spells like Ultima take eons not only to learn but to cast, ugh! Granted, spamming attacks of a few Ks isn't much fun either, but hey...
"this isn't a forum of game developers but rather of anti-discussion jerks"
This should be RMN's slogan. :^)
I personally liked Crazes attempt to give more individuality to the characters in FF6. I do something similar in FF5 where I only allow the characters to have certain classes (Farris has thief, Galaf is a Blue mage ect).
As the article itself; I just think the writer is reading way too much into the game. He also casually seams to forget all the negative aspects that come along with having 14 characters (lack of characterisation for a lot of them, the fact that they are completely interchangeable late in the game).
Also, if I recall correctly FF8 also had the diminution of character classes and it was regarded as one of the weaker games in the series. The reason 6 worked is because it had a good story as well as solid game play.
I do agree with him though on making your villains into characters in their own right rather than just forces that move the plot forward. One of the reasons 6s story dose better than 8s is that Kefka is a maniacal psychopath and he makes sure you know it while Ultamcia is a strange German woman that comes out of nowhere.

This is where I start shaking my fist and shouting "CORE!!" over and over at young'uns.
With a little observation it's usually easy to figure out how organized the developer's intentions were when making a game.

LockeZ
I'd really like to get rid of LockeZ. His play style is way too unpredictable. He's always like this too. If he ran a country, he'd just kill and imprison people at random until crime stopped.

If you think a few pages of analysis into the best RPG of all time* are "reading too much into the game" I feel like you really just aren't very interested in game design. I guarantee I have thought at least twenty times that much about the effects of the designer's choices in every game I've played in the last ten years, even if I don't typically write it down. Every single miniscule choice the designers make has far-reaching, subtle effects on dozens of different aspects of the game. The decision to make the Gauntlet accessory work for Umaro, for example, makes mages better in at least three different ways. This document is an extremely simple overview of some of the game's most basic gameplay concepts, that doesn't really make any attempt to discover why the designers made these choices, what the alternatives were, or what negative side-effects they caused.
*Not an objective factual statement, or even a very common opinion any more these days

If I didn’t know better I would think that statement was subtly directed towards me. Which is weird because I don’t think I’m that big of an egotist.

It wasn't that subtle, since it was a direct response to one of your statements.
Sigh... I really need to learn how to convey sarcasm in written form more accurately.

It was even worse in FFVII, when characters didn't have any unique battle commands/skills (Materia for everyone!)
I dont entirely agree with you, thats where limit breaks come in.
author=Allen Hunterauthor=Jparker1984And not to mention that with Espers characters like Terra and Celes are pretty much useless -- why use them them when you can just have tougher characters like Edgar, Shadow, Cyan, and Sabin learn Ultima and the strongest healing spells?author=kentonaI dont entirely agree with you, thats where limit breaks come in.

Um...what. Edgar, Sabin, Shadow and Cyan have really low magic power. Terra and Celes have far superior magic power. So your idea, isnt really good. Not for the characters you suggested atleast.
Yes, but you can increase Edgar, Sabin etc. magic power by equipping the right Esper. And you can do this long before you get Ultima.

true, but why not do that on the people that already have high magic power and make them even more powerful then they already are?
Oh you can, absolutely. You don’t have to though. Since you can make your fighters as powerful magic uses as your spell casters with enough time (and vice versa) all it really comes down to is which characters you like the most how much time you want to spend.

when it comes down to strictly personality.....I LOVE GAU. Gau just cracked me up all the time. When he talked to Cyan, it was funny.
Blue Mage's are fun, they have wide array of skill types and they a decent fighters. Statistically they are like red mages. They tend to have more powerful magic then red mages, but their magic takes more effort to find.

Terra and Celes are hands down the two best characters in the game. Cyan is notoriously shitty. You high dawg?
