IT'S THE ECONOMY, STUPID.

I would go through some trouble $183,500 a year plus expenses.
I'd rather be a university professor. I get paid, edit: read good books, corrupt the youth, and I can mouth off on whatever I want.
a flat tax and a scaling (progressive) tax are two completely different things. A flat tax is just that: flat. Like 25% for everybody.
And anywho, Canada and the US use a graduated tax rate. Everyone has a personal exemption amount, then the next 15,000 or so of income is taxed at a low rat (say 15%) then the next 20,000 at a higher rate, then the next 30,000 after that at an even higher rate, so on and so on until about after the first $120,000 of income, any income after that is taxed at the highest rate.
So, if you are making $59,999 a year and the next tax bracket is at $60,000, and you get a raise, it's not ALL of your income that is taxed at the higher rate, just whatever you make over $60,000. So there is no disincentive to make more moneys.

That's my goal! Except, you know, replace "corrupt" with "enlighten".
Pay isn't nearly as high as you think though. Especially considering how much training and education is needed. And luck/networking/kissing ass.

I didn't think university professor's got paid that much. An old friend of mine went through really tough training in becoming a professor and the pay he recieved was poor. He lost so much money than his previous job.

Generally, college professor is a solid upper middle-class job that ensures that you'll be able to pay your bills, but yes they do make less money than a lot of people assume.
One side benefit however is that you really don't work that many hours at all compared to other professional jobs like finance or technical work or journalism whatever.
