SKYBORN - INDIE "STEAMPUNK FANTASY" RPG
Posts
If the goal was "only" $$$, I'd be leaving RPGs for the birds and instead focusing on the business of making mobile social games. It takes passion to finish an RPG, especially a collaboration between two equal partners in development (me + the main artist) as this was.
Yep, just as no one outside the community cares if the tiles are custom, no one outside the community cares if the music is original. All they care is if it's good.

Don't understand why there's such a negative stigma around selling something you've probably spent countless weeks, even months on. I mean, if more RMers bothered going commercial they'd be alot less broke (and perhaps even make better games from the generated funds?). Don't know why most don't consider it, honestly...the success of such a path HAS been proven. All you need is a bit of marketing know-how.
EDIT: On-topic: While I can appreciate the effort gone into this game, I don't have the money to spare/am not really interested. Hope it still becomes a success!

You are an RPGMaker user, and thus, tiles from scratch is worth something. Outside this small community, that is worth very little.
Is this actually true? I've always been under the impression that players absolutely loathe when companies re-utilize assets (Be it graphics, music, etc.) in different games without at least making some changes to them. So, how is this different when indie developers do it? Or, it's equivalent, buying the commercial license of resources commonly seen in non-profit games. (Which I think is the case here?)
I mean, maybe it's not that custom content are "worth very little" for people outside this "small community". But rather, that they are not aware that there are other games with the same generic resources out there, but that in turn are available to play for free. Because if they knew this, I bet that would put a spin on anyone's perspective of rpg maker commercial games... I find it difficult for that not to be the case.
But ultimately, as long as everything is legal I don't see a problem with this practice. If you can price-tag your work and sell it, then more power to you. It's just that as a consumer, a game would truly have to stand out among others in order to justify the inversion.

Hahaha! My god! If you can spew that kind of rhetoric in a thread like this, I don't want to hear you talking politics! xD

It's absolutely true. People who want to play a game could care less who made your graphics/music/battle system/whatever. Only other game developers care about that.

Counter-example: Terraria
During alpha/beta there was a lot of backlash because the game used Final Fantasy 6 edits. So they changed it before official release. Acceptance of unoriginal graphics stems from ignorance, not indifference.

Well I hate it when people are negative about something for no reason when someone has put some much love sweat and tears into something. I may not know everything that goes into making one of these games as I only play them but I know it takes people month’s sometimes a year to make a good game. And one day I think I'd make marvellous politician but luckily I decided to keep my soul.

I think I may buy the game at the weekend though I am slightly hooked and I haven’t got excited about a game in months so maybe I am slightly bias in my speech earlier.

Comparing apples to oranges.
FF6 edits is a breach of copyright. There was no such shady behavior in the creation of Skyborn.
I just showed the game trailer to my brother who is a casual gamer and knows very little about rpgmaker, even less of rm communities.
I asked him how much does he think the game would cost on Steam. He said something between 10-20 dollars.
I asked him if he would play the game, he couldn't answer cause he'd need to know the style of battles, and whether there were many party members or not.

In my experience, yeah, it seems to be true. Different for commercial games I'm sure, but for free things? Yeah. Hero's Realm is a good example.

Blanket statement, and not quite true either. I've talked to a lot of players who know very well, but just don't give a shit as long as they're enjoying themselves.
Is this actually true? I've always been under the impression that players absolutely loathe when companies re-utilize assets (Be it graphics, music, etc.) in different games without at least making some changes to them.Games like the Super Robot Wars series counter this argument to a T, many of them re-utilize old assets (sometimes with minor enhancements) and they're a smash hit almost every single time. Most players simply don't give a damn as long as it's good.

Yeah, you're paying in part to see "generic resources", so what? You're paying for more than just the "generic resources" when you buy Skyborn or any other game out there.

Doubtful that players were concerned with copyright when they levied this criticism.
people pay good money for bad games all the time.
like is this new or something
top 5 cruel realities that independent alien observers of this planet have noted in their astral moleskines during this decade:
-any cookiecutter rm game with custom anime babes is going to sell/get 1000s of downloads
-people actually bought aveyond
-people will actually buy skyborn
-a sense of shame and/or self-awareness are not necessary to make money (in fact they may even hinder the process)
-(theres a blank space here for the 5th, download vx ace today and fill it in with your own commercial ""effort""")
face it, quality games are obsolete.
welcome to earth

Why do people need to be so negative? If it's not your sort of game fair enough don't pay for it but you have to accept that some people think it is a good game. And of course people bought Aveyond it is quite a popular brand that is turning into a nice little community just because such genre of games are not your cup of tea does not mean that other think this. I don't see why everyone here is all in downer about things that barely matter so what if you need to pay for something that here you might normally get for free most games here are good in theory but are heavily bugged. When you do get a decent game here like vacant sky I would pay if they charged for it because to be perfectly honest I thought it was just as good as commercial game if not better. You guys ought to get your big fat heads out of the sand and stop bad mouthing someone’s work just because you don't have the quality to charge for your games. This place is meant to help people develop games that are made for a hobby there free because most of the time you lot are learning how to make a good game. When you do make a Very good game why not charge with your own custom art and sound track why not charge ? Normally because these games are being sold they beta test them to the hill to make sure that there are no bugs. Something quite frankly your games don’t get enough of but I accept it because there free games or because people are still learning. That said I have seen an increase in RM being made commercial and a lot I did not find to be good enough quality to buy. But guess what guys I got over and DIDN’T BUY THEM. There such a thing as free will so just don’t buy them stop being idiots. If your do have feedback criticize contractively.
As Karsu would say, the direction this topic is taking "sucks". Don't make me lock it! :3
With that said, if someone wants to charge money for their games, then they can be my guest. If nobody buys their game, sucks for them...but I won't have any sympathy due to all the great free games available around here. If they make money off it? Good for them! I won't judge them any differently.
For the record, though, I do feel 10+ dollars is too much for an RPG Maker game, but it's Harm's decision to make. As a member of the scene, I just offer that as constructive feedback and not an indictment against him.
I understand where a lot of the opinions are coming from in this topic; it's just one of those heavily divided topics. People take many angles, from jealousy to indie integrity to business sense. It is what it is.
