If you don't know how to market, then market research first. Which happens a lot on this forum. No regression analysis, though.

I'm of the opinion that many devs measure their personal success on the number of people who like their games. Nothing wrong with that, but it is an uphill battle keeping your own interests in mind, if you're trying to please many others.
^ A good point. Number of people who like a game, number of downloads, number of comments, number of reviews, scores from reviews, etc...they are all incomplete measures of success. What should really matter is whether or not you reach your target audience.

If you made a game that could only be enjoyed by one other person in the world and that one other person plays and enjoys it, the game could be said to be a success in some sense.

If you made a game with as wide an appeal as Plants vs. Zombies but it is only getting played as much as Legionwood or Hero's Realm, there's a marketing failure.
