MANY & MORE GRATZ FOR "TO THE MOON" (LOCAL BOY DONE GOOD PART 2)
Posts
If you haven't spent the past 10 years under a rock, you know that (however you feel about it as a webcomic) Penny Arcade and its ever growing stable of subsidiaries is the beating heart of internet gaming culture. Being mentioned there even indirectly is a huge fucking deal that can catapult you instantly from nowhere to fame.
Many of you were probably following the Extra Credits series on "WRPGs" vs "JRPGs" and if you weren't, you really should be: lots to learn and discuss. In the third part of the series, well, there was a screenshot of an RPG Maker DMS during a segment when they were talking about how much menu-based combat in RPGs sucks (THEY ARE WRONG ABOUT THAT; also it made me sad to see something from RM used as a bad example). But then they were listing promising examples of recent jRPGs that HAVE been good and they mentioned To The Moon, made by our very own Kan "Reives" Gao (AKA Freebird Games), alongside a bunch of mainstream commercial games and with none of that "even though it was made in RPG Maker" bullshit.
I thought this was a kind of a big deal (anything even peripherally related to Penny Arcade, like a show hosted there, is about as MAINSTREAM EXPOSURE as possible) and I thought I'd share, but you can use the thread to discuss pretty much whatever you want, from why you think To The Moon sucks to what you agreed with (or didn't) in the series.
Apologies if someone beat me to this; don't have the time nowadays to check every topic in every forum on RMN.

To The Moon won best adventure game of 2011 over at GamrReview as well. Reive's game has gotten quite big. Also I've never been to PennyArcade, I thought they were just funny comics or whatever.
I deeply admire Reives, for all his works, always very happy when exceptional quality is recognized and succeeds.
There's a little too much emphasis on the fact that someone from the general RM community (like ive rarely seen reives post unless it was for a game) made it big. I would probably just give him a pat on the back for not relying on the RM community for exposure or like... making a good game regardless of the program (I haven't played To The Moon so I have no idea).
Extra Credits is shit btw.

I don't like it as much as most people 'round here do, Darken, but clearly I don't hate it as much as you do. : )

this i agree with entirely; the RM* incestuous cesspool is just that
do you really think calunio and I kept our high-DL games* (nowhere near as high as Reives, admittedly) within the RM* community? looool (also see: harm's shitty thousands-of-dollars-making VX games)
*Visions & Voices is terrible, never play it, it should not have gotten any reception let alone its decent one

no? obviously the rm* community isn't very good exposure. just saying that it admirable that he ventured outside of the RM comfort zone and made it big. A lot of people here usually just post their game on every RM related site and thats it.
I just find Reives' games exceptionally good, and am very happy he's making it, I'm not focused on the fact that he's from the RM community. This said it is surprising and all the more admirable that he could make games of a quality compared to that of commercial games with an engine such as rpgmaker. Nigsek, A monster's Tail, if it had been finished also reached a degree of quality where, imo, it could have been commercialized.
I was in no way shape or form congratulating Freebird Games for staying within the RM community: quite the opposite in fact. Ease down.
I don't know for a fact that Harmonic's second game is as shitty as his first, but it is nonetheless depressing/uplifting to see it making thousands of dollars. Uplifting because you know what mofos, all of us could be doing that with a touch more ambition. Depressing because I'm currently not, although the "get rich slow" scheme to earn "literally hundreds" (lool) of dollars from making the other kind of RPGs is well underway.
Reives is fucking amazing, and I've always said so. I'm actually almost *HAPPY* to see him have such breakaway success. I'd love to work with him on something commercial, but it's probably just a pipe dream.

I crack up every time I listen to Craze's self-loathing for V&V when I was extremely impressed by the overall design and flow, especially with the self-imposed time limit. What a dummy.
I often use To The Moon as an example of good game design, regardless of engine. When people get into engine wars, it's a great way to show that a good game can be made within any engine's limitations, if properly planned. I'm glad that Reives did well, but Craze makes a good point - the dude wasn't foolish enough to limit his game to RM.net, and no one else should either. If you want to hear from more people, get more people to play your game, and learn more in general, show it to everyone you can!

I think Reives went out of the RM circle because he knew he could, I mean he is aware of the quality of what he does and can do (regardless of the engine), it didn't work the other way around.
OK, I need to ask this, I'm a fan of adventure games, and love good stories, I loved "The Mirror Lied" so I downloaded the demo for "To the Moon" and I didn't really like it.
Can anyone explain to me what's all the fuss about?
On topic, I usually enjoy Extra Credits (except for those times when they're completely blind to reality) but their "WRPGs" vs "JRPGs" episodes were half assed :(
If you hang around PA forums and get to know Jerry and Mike (which are in no way as active as they were) and assuming you trust your work (and that it's not illegal) you may only need to send them an email, if you're lucky you can also get exposure.

whoa I just watched this Penny Arcade series on WRPG vs JRPG and was totally psyched when I saw To The Moon mentioned.

I don't know. Probably the same fuss people make about "The mirror lied" on the first place. There's like one or two cool ideas about that little pretense of a game, but overall it ain't that impressive. The amount of popularity it has reached baffles my mind! ...Can't help but to think it's exactly the same way with "To the moon". xP

Haven't played it, but: it's really pretty.
That's a huge fucking deal around here...and everywhere else.

Yeah, it is.
And the lack of it, too.
You do know that To The Moon was reviewed by gamespot, right? That's exposure too.
