MANY & MORE GRATZ FOR "TO THE MOON" (LOCAL BOY DONE GOOD PART 2)
Posts
To The Moon was featured in the Independent Games Festival, and got a nomination for best audio. I played it on a class excursion to "The Best of IGF" exhibition, and didn't find it all that amazing. The audio on the game was broken on the display, and the gameplay itself was actually pretty typical of Reive- slow, monotonous, and slightly repetitive. There were some nice puzzles, but overall from the tidbit I played it was pretty typical fare.
I think it's more or less exposure that gets any game anywhere in contrast to it actually being decent and/or fun to play. Of course there are cases were whimsical/horrendous games get taken and blown right out of proportion (sexy hiking anyone?) but it's really up to the creator.
For the record, although we all ripped into jomarcenter for his antics/terrible gameplay, if the game had even had the slightest amount more playability and he kept ranting on about it like he does, it would've become popular. Popular does not necessarily mean "good".
(see: Cosplay Crisis)
Also: if Extra Credits is using To The Moon as an example of a good RPG just because it isn't "menu-based", they need to pull the stick out of their arse. I still passionately love menu-based RPGs and for that matter loathe playing RPGs like Dragon Age for reasons that continue to allude me, and immediately declaring menu-based is "crap" and To The Moon is "good" makes me facepalm hard enough to leave a noticeable impression of a hand on my face.)

There is something to be said for killing menus, but it is most definitely not "menu bad in all cases."
Extra Credits is usually pretty okay, but then at the last minute of the video they always build up to "AND THIS IS WHY DOING THIS WILL CHANGE THE WORLD:"
I tend to just watch, like, the first four minutes because of that. =x

do you really think calunio and I kept our high-DL games* (nowhere near as high as Reives, admittedly) within the RM* community? looool (also see: harm's shitty thousands-of-dollars-making VX games)
*Visions & Voices is terrible, never play it, it should not have gotten any reception let alone its decent one
Your jealousy is very flattering.
