SO MUCH TO DO AND JUST GETTING STARTED

Wow, getting started, so much to do. Where do I start?

*looks around for pointers*

To be sure, I am more interested in learning how to do it myself. At least right now I am more like trying to get my bearings. I have amassed a large collection of links and offhand tutorials; I am working every day on the development of my story, characters, and have an idea of the mechanics I want to implement. It's all, however, in my head, and I am trying to do it on my own, and it is turning into a heavy burden. Sometimes I tire.

So yeah. Where do I start? What do I do to lay the groundwork, the foundation? Organization?

Can someone point me toward a relevant newbie thread or a particularly good tutorial to get my feet wet, and then I am off and running. I intend to contribute regularly, and look forward to getting to know people along the way!
Okay, you sure have ambition, that is a great thing.
I don't think I understand all you ask but I will try.

*You can start by downloading any engine (wich one? well that depends on wich kind of game you want to do, you can investigate here)

*then see what you can do with your engine, you can do some great things with years of experience so if you are starting don't be too ambitious, at the end games are for fun not for complexity that is just a bonus.

*the next step is to visualize your game and planning how you are going to make it.

*the last step is to actually do it and finish it

*also, there are many good topics in the forums, maybe you can find something in game development forums that can help you.

Welcome ;) hope you contribute lots
Hiya! Welcome to RMN.
There are plenty of tutorials on RMN, so you should be set.
Welcome to RMN. I'm new my self and I've learned that a lot of the skills that can be learned from RPG Maker VX can be transferred over to VX Ace with very little effort, so you should definitely read some of the VX Tutorials.

You start with Violator!

More serious comment:
Having a "castle in the clouds" idea is fine, but you have to lay the foundations for it first. That's what my high school valedictory speech was about, actually. Start with small things, and work your way up as you learn new techniques.

As to which maker to use, the RGP Maker series is pretty developer-friendly with it's built-in resource kit (The so-called "RTP".). In my humble opinion, you're probably best off using the newest maker (VX Ace), but you may want to look at the other more recent ones (XP, VX) to see which one suits your fancy.

If you're just starting out, make sure you fiddle before actually starting anything major. I learnt this the hard way with my first major project also being my first real learning experience, which lead to a lot of pitfalls and failures (and remaking).

Try and finish something super small to begin with, then branch out from there.
Start here!

Welcome to RMN! Enjoy your stay
And make sure you play other peoples games! They'll challenge and inspire you. Also you might even get the occasional moment of fun. :P
